Seminal plasma protein concentrations vary with feed efficiency and fertility-related measures in young beef bulls.

Fertility-associated proteins (FAP) found in seminal plasma indicate sexual maturity, which appears to be influenced by feed efficiency in cattle. This study characterized FAP via proteomics and verified associations of these proteins with feed efficiency, body composition and fertility-related measures in yearling beef bulls. Assessments including testicular ultrasonography, infrared thermography, seminal quality, seminal plasma proteomics, carcass composition, and reproductive organ biometry were obtained. From a population of 31 bulls, the seven most and least feed efficient (efficient, ine

Homeostatic disruption and sexual disorders.

A novel model of human sexual disorders is offered. It claims that the inherited schemata representation (ISR) program for gender definition and sexual orientation is impaired during early homeostatic disruption. This causes the transformation of postnatal asexuality to 'infantile sexuality' operating on an impulse-like pattern. Late homeostatic disruption leads to impairment in the acquired engram linkage (AEL) programs which are composed of consistent elements on gender definition in terms of sexual orientation under cultural, religious and parental influence. These affected programs replace

Tissue-specific transcriptomic analysis of accelerated reproductive development of immature Queensland fruit fly induced by raspberry ketone ingestion.

BACKGROUND: Raspberry ketone (RK) is a phytochemical compound that enhances male mating performance and accelerates sexual development in immature male Queensland fruit fly (Bactrocera tryoni). While the behavioural effects of RK are well established, the tissue-specific molecular responses remain unclear. We investigated how RK reshapes gene expression in a tissue-specific and time-dependent manner during sexual maturation. RESULTS: We performed tissue-specific transcriptomic profiling across five key tissues, including testes, accessory gland, ejaculatory apodeme, rectal gland, and carcass,…

Obesogenic environment by excess of dietary fats in different phases of development reduces spermatic efficiency of wistar rats at adulthood: correlations with metabolic status.

This study compares the impact of obesogenic environment (OE) in six different periods of development on sperm parameters and the testicular structure of adult rats and their correlations with sex steroid and metabolic scenario. Wistar rats were exposed to OE during gestation (O1), during gestation/lactation (O2), from weaning to adulthood (O3), from lactation to adulthood (O4), from gestation to sexual maturity (O5), and after sexual maturation (O6). OE was induced by a 20% fat diet, and control groups were fed a balanced diet (4% fat). Serum leptin levels and adiposity index indicate that al…

Harmful effects of carbamazepine on the postnatal development of the rat ventral prostate.

BACKGROUND: Carbamazepine (CBZ) is a first-line antiepileptic drug (AED), although it is also used for the treatments of psychiatric disorders and neuropathic pain. The CBZ utilization has been associated with male reproductive damage, including hormonal alterations, sexual dysfunction and reduction of sperm quality. The wide and long-term use of the CBZ is a common schedule in children and adolescents and alters the testosterone level in adult rats and humans. The objective of this work was to evaluate the CBZ side effects on the ventral prostate of rats from pre-puberty to sexual maturation,…

Integrated analysis of miRNA and mRNA expression profiles in testes of Landrace and Hezuo boars.

Precocious puberty is closely related to testicular development and spermatogenesis, and there is increasing evidence that miRNAs are involved in regulation of testicular development and spermatogenesis. However, little is known about the regulation of microRNAs (miRNAs) during precocious maturation in Hezuo (HZ) boars. In this study, serum Testosterone (T), Estradiol (E2), Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and Luteinizing hormone (LH) levels were detected in HZ and Landrace (LC) boars in the postnatal period at 30, 90, 120, 180, and 240 days, and the testes of HZ and LC boars at 30 and 120 d

Effect of lighting programs during the pullet phase on skeletal integrity of egg-laying strains of chickens.

Egg-laying strains of chickens are highly susceptible to osteoporosis, a noninfectious disease characterized by a decrease in structural bone as hens age. To minimize the onset of osteoporosis, it was hypothesized that a delay in sexual maturity may allow a pullet to develop a stronger skeletal frame before egg laying, leading to improved skeletal mineralization at end of lay. One management tool that can easily be implemented by pullet growers to delay sexual maturity is length of photoperiod. The objective of the current study was to determine whether lighting programs used during the pullet

Prenatal and Preweaning Environmental Effects upon Pubertal Development and Sperm Production.

This chapter examines the role of early life perturbations upon the developing bull calf. Surprisingly, we observe effects upon sexual development and sperm quality, including sperm morphology, as early as the periconception period (-60 to 23 days post conception). Similarly, during postnatal life (prior to 6mths of age) dietary perturbations retard sexual development and sperm quality. Herein we discuss the ontology of development and examine why these periods of development are fundamental to fertility in the bull. Ultimately, this leads to recommendations for changes to current husbandry pr

Aquaporins in bovine male reproductive tract: From calves to reproductive bulls.

The role of aquaporins (AQPs) in the male reproductive system of cattle, particularly in relation to spermatogenesis, remains incompletely understood. Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyze the developmental changes in AQP8 and AQP11 expression in the bovine (Bos taurus) male reproductive tract. Tissue samples were collected from three age groups of animals: calves aged 5-6 weeks (n = 10), young bulls aged 15-25 weeks (n = 10) and reproductive bulls aged 2-6 years (n = 11). The expression of the studied AQPs was analyzed using immunohistochemistry (IHC). The identification of AQP8 and

The role of adipose tissue in puberty and reproductive health.

Adipose tissue is an endocrine organ that signals energy status to the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis to regulate reproductive function … ow adipocyte development during critical periods of life can affect future reproductive health from sexual maturation to fertility and points to the clinical significance of further unlocking the underlying mechanism and weight management. As such, early prevention and long-term management for weight control might be considered as effective measures to mitigate obe …

Hypothalamic control of puberty: from neuronal circuits to mechanisms for its metabolic regulation.

The hypothalamus is a singular brain region with essential roles in the control of a wide diversity of vegetative functions, from growth and energy balance to reproduction. These processes are governed by interconnected neuroendocrine pathways that enable proper adjustment of fundamental biological programs to internal and external cues along the lifespan. Puberty is a key maturational phenomenon that permits full sexual and somatic maturation, and attainment of reproductive capacity, together with important psychological changes. Puberty is to a large extent, a brain-driven phenomenon, with t

Loss of Fshr Prevents Testicular Maturation in Atlantic Salmon (Salmo salar L.).

Early puberty poses a significant challenge for male Atlantic salmon in aquaculture due to its negative impact on growth and welfare. The regulation of puberty in vertebrates involves 2 key reproductive hormones: follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) and their gonadal receptors. In male mice lacking FSH receptor, testes size is reduced, but fertility is maintained, while medaka and zebrafish with a disrupted fshr gene exhibit near normal testis size and fertility. In these fishes both Fsh and Lh are present during puberty and Lh may rescue fertility, while in salmonid

Evidence of apoptosis as an early event leading to cyclophosphamide-induced primordial follicle depletion in a prepubertal mouse model.

INTRODUCTION: The mechanisms leading to ovarian primordial follicle depletion following gonadotoxic chemotherapy with cyclophosphamide and other cytotoxic drugs are currently understood through two main explanatory theories: apoptosis and over-activation. Discrepancies between the findings of different studies investigating these mechanisms do not allow to reach a firm conclusion. The heterogeneity of cell types in ovaries and their different degrees of sensitivity to damage, cell-cell interactions, periodical follicle profile differences, model age-dependent differences, and differences of ex

Gut microbiota dysbiosis induced by alcohol exposure in pubertal and adult mice.

UNLABELLED: Alcohol intake causes many diseases including neuropsychiatric symptoms, nutritional deficiency, progressive pancreatitis, liver cirrhosis, and ischemic heart disease. The gut microbiota changes significantly after alcohol exposure. Alcohol consumption tends to increase in underage and young people, but the feature of the gut microbiota in puberty remains largely unexplored. In this study, we conducted alcohol-exposed pubertal and adult mice model to investigate the intestinal damage and gut microbiota change. Interestingly, the responses of pubertal mice and adult mice after alcoh

Effect of di(n-butyl) phthalate on the blood-testis barrier during puberty onset.

Di(n-butyl) phthalate (DBP) is considered a substance of serious concern because of its reproductive toxicity and endocrine-disrupting properties. Exposure to DBP causes morphological and functional changes in the male reproductive system of birds and mammals. However, there are no detailed reports on the effects of DBP on the Sertoli cell and junctional complexes of the blood-testis barrier (BTB) in birds. The present study investigated dose-related ultrastructural changes in Sertoli cells and junctional complexes of the BTB in adult Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) exposed to DBP

Male-induced early puberty correlates with the maturation of arcuate nucleus kisspeptin neurons in does.

In goats, early exposure of spring-born females to sexually active bucks induces an early puberty onset assessed by the first ovulation. This effect is found when females are continuously exposed well before the male breeding season starting in September. The first aim of this study was to evaluate whether a shortened exposure of females to males could also lead to early puberty. We assessed the onset of puberty in Alpine does isolated from bucks (ISOL), exposed to wethers (CAS), exposed to intact bucks from the end of June (INT1), or mid-August (INT2). Intact bucks became sexually active in m

Review: Early and late determinants of puberty in ruminants and the role of nutrition.

This article reviews the scientific literature on puberty with a focus on ruminants and draws inference, where appropriate, from recent findings in transgenic mouse models and human pathology. Early genetic determinants of puberty have been discovered in humans suffering from hypogonadotropic hypogonadism or central precocious puberty. Transgenic mouse models selected on the basis of the causative defective genes helped in discovering the cellular and molecular mechanisms involved. Most of the genes found are involved in the development of neuroendocrine networks during embryo development and

Postnatal Development and Maintenance of Functional Pituitary Gonadotrophs Is Dependent on PI4-Kinase A.

Postnatal development of functional pituitary gonadotrophs is necessary for maturation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, puberty, and reproduction. Here we examined the role of PI4-kinase A, which catalyzes the biosynthesis of PI4P in mouse reproduction by knocking out this enzyme in cells expressing the gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) receptor. Knockout (KO) mice were infertile, reflecting underdeveloped gonads and reproductive tracts and lack of puberty. The number and distribution of hypothalamic GnRH neurons and Gnrh1 expression in postnatal KOs were not affected, whereas K
