A serological survey for Coxiella burnetii was undertaken on a randomly selected population of 103 Ontario sheep flocks. Twenty-two flocks had at least one positive ewe; seven flocks had two or more reactors. The positive flocks were geographically clustered northwest of Guelph. Crutch-clipping of the ewe's wool prior to lambing, and total confinement housing at lambing in winter and spring seemed to lower the probability of seroreactivity of the flock (p less than 0.05). The study suggests that sheep are not a major reservoir for Coxiella burnetii in Ontario.

The effectiveness of an oil adjuvant vaccine (OAV) incorporating locally isolated strains of Pasteurella haemolytica type 7 and Pasteurella multocida types A and D was compared with that of Carovax (Wellcome Laboratories) in imported cross-bred lambs. The criterion of efficacy was the ability of the vaccines to reduce the extent of pneumonic lesions in vaccinated as against unvaccinated control lambs. Rumination activity was recorded by three different methods in five sheep which had been fasted for 12 hours. When a balloon on plastic tubing was passed into the reticulum via a rumen cannula there was significantly more rumination recorded during the subsequent three hours than when rumination was recorded by registering jaw movements alone. The skull of a mountain sheep (Ovis canadensis cremnobates) exhibiting osteoporosis was recovered from San Diego County, California. This specimen also exhibited lateral asymmetry of the cranium and rostrum, malocclusion of molars, and mandibular asymmetry. Investigators are cautioned about potentially confusing lesions associated with chronic frontal sinusitis with lesions of osteoporosis in mountain sheep. To our knowledge this is the first report of osteoporosis in this species.

Administration of lithium carbonate to sheep in the dose range of 600-1800 mg/day resulted in a linearly described rise in lithium levels in plasma and red blood cells. The effects of maternal hyperglycemia on fetal renal function were investigated in 10 chronically catheterized fetal sheep after the infusion of 100 g of glucose into the ewe over 30 min. A trial was carried out to assess the efficacy of a nitrophenylguanidine compound, netobimin against Dicrocoelium dendriticum in naturally infected sheep. At a dose rate of 20 mg/kg bodyweight administered orally the drug was highly effective, producing a mean reduction of 98.9 per cent in the fluke burdens of treated animals compared with untreated controls. No side effects were observed in the treated sheep.

From 1970 to 1985, 973 outbreaks of abortion in sheep and 262 outbreaks of abortion in goats from southern Spain were studied.
