Imaging the long head of biceps tendon--a pictorial essay emphasizing magnetic resonance.

Lesions of the long head of the bicepstendon (BT) are seen in association with tears of the rotator-cuff, particularly lesions of the subscapularis tendon and the rotator-interval. The frequency of positive MR-findings at the BT is approximately 25%. The pathologic alterations include complete medial luxation, subluxation and entrapment by the subscapularis tendon, tendinitis or tendovaginitis and lesions at the origin of the tendon at the superior labrum (superior labrum anterior to posterior (SLAP)--lesions). The imaging signs of BT pathology on MR include an abnormal course and position of

[Fracture of the Anatomical Neck of the Humerus Associated with Posterior Shoulder Dislocation. Case Report].

A rare case of a fracture of the anatomical neck of the humerus associated with a posterior dislocation of the shoulder in a 43-year-old man is presented. It was managed by immediate surgery using locking plate osteosynthesis. The shoulder was immobilised for 5 weeks in a Gilchrist brace. The outcome was very good with a full range of motion and a stable shoulder at 1 year after injury, with no signs of avascular necrosis of the humeral head. The aetiology of this injury and possibilities of its treatment are discussed. Key words: shoulder dislocation, humeral fractures.

Dislocation of the shoulder joint with ipsilateral humeral shaft fracture: two case reports.

INTRODUCTION: A combination of the shaft fracture of the humerus with shoulder dislocation is a rarely documented injury. Moreover, few reports describe a long-term outcome after a follow-up period over 10 years. The present article is the first report of long-term clinical results obtained with this combined injury. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We present two cases of the dislocation of the shoulder joint with ipsilateral humeral shaft fracture. One is an anterior dislocation and the other is posterior. The anterior dislocation was closely reduced on the date of injury, but the posterior dislocati

A longitudinal study of injuries to athletes with disabilities.

This study investigated the number and type of injuries that occurred to athletes with disabilities from 1990-1996. The subjects were U.S. athletes who participated in the 1990 World Games and Championships, 1991 U.S. Paralympic Trials, 1992 Paralympic Games, the 1994 World Athletics Championship, and the 1996 Paralympic Games. A reportable injury was defined as an injury/illness that was evaluated by the U.S. Medical Staff during these competitions. Illnesses (29.8%) were the most commonly reported problem followed by muscular strains (22.1%). The most commonly injured body locations were the

Acromioclavicular joint disorders.

The acromioclavicular joint is commonly involved in athletic injuries. Most commonly, a sprain to the joint occurs with variability in the amount of ligamentous damage and displacement that occurs. In all but the most severe dislocations, treatment consists of initial sling immobilization and early functional rehabilitation. The outcome is usually excellent with full return of function following these injuries. The rarer types (IV, V, and VI) require operative reduction and fixation. Distal clavicle fractures are related injuries, which many times disrupt the stabilizing ligaments of the acrom

Clavicle Elevation or Shoulder Girdle Depression in Acromioclavicular Joint Dislocation: A Radiological Investigation.

BACKGROUND: The side-comparative coracoclavicular (CC) distance is used to describe the vertical instability component of acute acromioclavicular (AC) joint dislocations. Elevation of the clavicle or a depression of the shoulder girdle can lead to an increased CC distance. The dislocation direction has not yet been investigated and is not included in common classification systems. HYPOTHESIS: Clavicle elevation is primarily responsible for vertical dislocation in AC joint separation. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study; Level of evidence, 3. METHODS: Weighted and nonweighted bilateral plain

Ice hockey shoulder pad design and the effect on head response during shoulder-to-head impacts.

Ice hockey body checks involving direct shoulder-to-head contact frequently result in head injury. In the current study, we examined the effect of shoulder pad style on the likelihood of head injury from a shoulder-to-head check. Shoulder-to-head body checks were simulated by swinging a modified Hybrid-III anthropomorphic test device (ATD) with and without shoulder pads into a stationary Hybrid-III ATD at 21 km/h. Tests were conducted with three different styles of shoulder pads (traditional, integrated and tethered) and without shoulder pads for the purpose of control. Head response kinematic

Neuro-orthopedic management of shoulder deformity and dysfunction in brain-injured patients: a novel approach.

Shoulder problems are common in patients with traumatic brain injury. Very little has been written about the evaluation and neuro-orthopedic management of these problems. This is largely because there have not been surgical treatments available other than release of contracted, nonfunctional shoulders. Shoulder problems can be classified and evaluated using several different strategies: bony versus soft tissue restrictions; static versus dynamic deformities; traumatic injuries versus impairments secondary to weakness and spasticity; or problems of active function versus problems of passive fun

Combined injuries of the brachial plexus and spinal cord.

A total of 11 patients with combined traumatic injuries of the brachial plexus and spinal cord were reviewed retrospectively. Brachial plexus paralysis in such dual injuries tends to be diagnosed and treated late and the prognosis is usually poor. The associated injuries, which were all on the same side as the plexus lesion, were to the head (nine cases), shoulder girdle (five), thorax (nine) and upper limb (seven). These other injuries were responsible for the delayed diagnosis of brachial plexus paralysis and the poor prognosis was probably because of the delay in starting treatment and the

Patient characteristics and clinical management of patients with shoulder pain in U.S. primary care settings: secondary data analysis of the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey.

BACKGROUND: Although shoulder pain is a commonly encountered problem in primary care, there are few studies examining its presenting characteristics and clinical management in this setting. METHODS: We performed secondary data analysis of 692 office visits for shoulder pain collected through the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (Survey years 1993-2000). Information on demographic characteristics, history and place of injury, and clinical management (physician order of imaging, physiotherapy, and steroid intraarticular injection) were examined. RESULTS: Shoulder pain was associated wit
