OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to examine the influence of personality factors on health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
METHODS: A total of 120 individuals, 60 with ulcerative colitis and 60 with Crohn's disease, filled out the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Questionnaire, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, the Neuroticism scale of the Eysenck Personality Inventory, and a scale about difficulty describing feelings to other people. Based on the hypothesis that personal narratives help to cope people with stressful life events, 33 adult siblings of former childhood cancer patients were asked how they had experienced illness and treatment of their brother or sister. This study examined stress-support in 42 families of 3 to 18-year-old children with Prader-Willi syndrome. Hostility features, mental symptoms, and stressful life events were investigated in 100 patients (59 men and 41 women) suffering from cancer. Fifty-seven healthy men (n = 26) and women (n = 31) were used for comparison purposes. Recent research addressing the link between psychological factors and risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) has focused on the areas of hostility and anger and produced sometimes contradictory results. This study makes use of four questionnaire measures of hostility and anger, which were administered to matched groups with and without CHD. Quicker experiences of anger with greater verbal expression best predicted CHD. The difficulties in teasing out the relative contributions of emotional expression, experience and personality using available questionnaires are discussed.
