Adverse childhood experiences and geriatric depression: results from the 2010 BRFSS.

OBJECTIVE: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), including physical, sexual, and emotional abuse, have been shown to result in a variety of poor outcomes including depression. The majority of research has examined the impact of such events on adolescents and young adults leaving a dearth of information regarding how these events may affect depressive symptom point prevalence later in life. METHODS: Data from the U.S. CDC's 2010 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Survey (BRFSS) were used to estimate the point prevalence of depression in individuals 60 years of age and greater based on presenc

Comparison of hepatocyte phenotypes at the glutathione transferase and albumin loci in Sprague-Dawley and Nagase analbuminemic rats and F1 progeny after initiation and promotion.

Hepatocarcinogenesis was examined in an initiation--promotion protocol with a single initiating dose of 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA) followed by promotion with phenobarbital (PB) in the Nagase analbuminemic rat (NA), the Sprague-Dawley rat (SD) and their F1 crosses. All rats received a 70% partial hepatectomy, followed at 24 h by 30 mg DMBA/kg body wt or the solvent. After a 2 week recovery following surgery, half of the solvent control and initiated groups received either basal diet or promotion with 0.05% PB mixed into the basal NIH-07 diet. After 12 weeks of promotion, the rats wer

Digital Screening Tool to Help Parents and Adolescents Quit Smoking and Vaping: Effectiveness of the CanCEASE Pilot Trial.

OBJECTIVE: Fifteen percent of Canadian children are exposed to household second-hand smoke. The Clinical Effort Against Secondhand Smoke (CEASE) intervention systematically screens parents for tobacco use in pediatric care settings and facilitates access to evidence-based cessation services. This single-blind pilot randomized controlled trial (RCT) compared CanCEASE (an adaptation of CEASE for adolescents and e-cigarette users) to usual care. METHODS: Parents of children ages 0 to 17 years and adolescents ages 14 to 17 years were eligible if they reported smoking or using e-cigarettes in the

Intergenerational and organ-specific alterations in mitochondrial DNA copy number following preconception irradiation.

Ionizing radiation, a potent inducer of redox stress, perturbs both nuclear and mitochondrial genomes, yet how such stress shapes mitochondrial inheritance across generations remains unclear. In this study, we examined intergenerational and organ-specific mitochondrial responses to parental X-ray irradiation in mice. Eight-week-old male and female C57BL/6N mice were exposed to 2 Gy of single whole-body X-ray irradiation before mating, generating paternal-, maternal-, and dual-irradiated lineages. In the parents, peripheral blood-derived mitochondrial DNA copy number (mtDNAcn) transiently incre

Kentish plovers Anarhynchus alexandrinus increase parental cooperation in variable environments.

Environmental variability significantly influences parental care, likely because parental care can buffer nest survival against environmental variations, enabling those receiving greater parental care to tolerate a wider range of conditions. Under harsh conditions (e.g., high temperatures), this buffering effect may be reinforced through increased parental cooperation. Here, using data from a coastal and an inland site, we examined the effects of high ambient temperature (Ta) and wind, and their variability, on nest attendance and behavioural thermoregulation in Kentish plovers (Anarynchus ale

Cognitive Orientation to daily Occupational Performance Approach using telerehabilitation with parents to improve performance issues in children/adolescents with Dravet Syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: The Cognitive Orientation to Occupational Performance (CO-OP) Approach, a problem-solving intervention process, has been shown to improve activity performance in children with Dravet Syndrome (DS). However, some individuals with DS have cognitive, language and/or behavioral deficits that preclude their ability to participate in the problem-solving process. To date, the CO-OP Approach has never been applied to parents with the goal of enhancing children/adolescent's performance. OBJECTIVE: Explore the feasibility of a telerehabilitation-based CO-OP Approach with parents of indivi

De Novo or inherited: gonosomal mosaicism in hereditary angioedema due to C1 inhibitor deficiency.

Hereditary angioedema (HAE) is a rare genetic disease, characterized by transient and self-limiting episodes of subcutaneous or submucosal swelling that spontaneously resolve within two to five days. The most common form of HAE, HAE-C1-INH, is caused by deleterious mutations in the SERPING1 gene, encoding the C1-Inhibitor protein, and its diagnosis is confirmed by decreased C1-INH function. Distinctively from other genetic forms of HAE, up to 15-20% of HAE-C1-INH cases are sporadic caused by de novo mutations. Here, we report a patient with apparently sporadic HAE-C1-INH. The patient had compa

Pediatric Cardiology Specialist's Opinions Toward the Acceptability of Comfort Care for Congenital Heart Disease.

In order to evaluate physicians' willingness to seek legal action to mandate surgery when parents refuse surgery for various congenital heart lesions, we surveyed pediatric cardiologists and cardiovascular surgeons at 4 children's hospitals. We asked whether physicians would support parental refusal of surgery for specific heart defects and, if not, whether they would seek legal action to mandate surgery. We then analyzed associations between physicians' willingness to mandate surgery and national operative mortality rates for each lesion. We surveyed 126 cardiologists and 9 cardiac surgeons a

A nonsense mutation in the tyrosinase gene of Afghan patients with tyrosinase negative (type IA) oculocutaneous albinism.

We detected a nonsense mutation in the tyrosinase gene of two Afghan sibs with classical tyrosinase negative (type IA) oculocutaneous albinism. The mutation, a single base substitution at codon 178, creates an amber termination codon that truncates the 529 amino acid tyrosinase polypeptide at this position. The patients' parents are first cousins, and the patients are therefore homoallelic for this mutation.

Karyotype 47,XXY,18p--in a newborn child with holoprosencephaly.

This may be the first reported case of a 47,XXY,18p--("Klinefelter-de Grouchy I syndrome"), in a post-term male neonate. The child had a dysmorphic facies, a small nose with a single orifice, cranial malformations and an alobar holoprosencephaly. These symptoms corresponded with the known phenotypic variants of the simple 18p--anomaly. The karyotypes of both parents were normal.

Cell-cell communication-mediated cell-type-specific parent-of-origin effects in mammals.

Genomic imprinting is manifested as monoallelic expression of genes according to parental origin, which is closely linked to mammalian placentation and human diseases. Yet, it is unclear how genomic imprinting evolves in different cell types. Here we generate a single-nucleus transcriptomic landscape of mammalian placental development, identifying 5 major cell types and 14 trophoblast subtypes. By developing a framework for integrating the datasets of single-nucleus transcriptome and whole-genome variations from reciprocal crosses of the genetically distinct Duroc and Lulai pig breeds, we cons

Characteristics of induced mutations in offspring derived from irradiated mouse spermatogonia and mature oocytes.

The exposure of germ cells to radiation introduces mutations in the genomes of offspring, and a previous whole-genome sequencing study indicated that the irradiation of mouse sperm induces insertions/deletions (indels) and multisite mutations (clustered single nucleotide variants and indels). However, the current knowledge on the mutation spectra is limited, and the effects of radiation exposure on germ cells at stages other than the sperm stage remain unknown. Here, we performed whole-genome sequencing experiments to investigate the exposure of spermatogonia and mature oocytes. We compared de
