Preliminary characterization of the skin microbiota in basal cell carcinoma: An exploratory pilot study in Korean patients.

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common form of skin cancer, with ultraviolet radiation recognized as the primary environmental driver; however, the potential contribution of alterations in the skin microbiota remains incompletely understood, particularly in Asian populations. This exploratory pilot study describes bacterial community patterns in BCC lesions compared with contralateral clinically normal skin in 20 Korean patients. Lesional and contralateral samples were obtained using paired skin swabs and punch biopsies and analyzed by full-length 16S rRNA gene sequencing, with targeted

Protective and Reparative Effects of Naematelia aurantialba Ethanol Extract Against UV-Induced Skin Photoaging and Its Underlying Mechanisms.

This study aimed to investigate the protective effects of Naematelia aurantialba ethanol extract (NAAE) against skin photoaging. Furthermore, we sought to elucidate the underlying repair mechanisms and related pathways. The results indicated that NAAE treatment significantly enhanced cell viability and proliferation under UV stress, while exerting potent antioxidant effects by effectively reducing intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation and mitigating oxidative damage. Furthermore, NAAE accelerated the migration capacity of damaged cells and promoted skin repair. In animal mod

Metagenomic characterization of bacterial community and antibiotic resistance genes found in the mass transit system in Seoul, South Korea.

Mass transit systems, including subways and buses, are useful environments for studying the urban microbiome, as the vast majority of populations in urban areas use public transportation. Microbial communities in urban environments include both human- and environment-associated bacteria that play roles in health and pathogen transmission. In this study, we used shotgun metagenomic sequencing to profile microbial communities sampled from various surfaces found in subway stations and bus stops within the Seoul mass transit system. The metagenomic approach and network analysis were used to invest

A systematic review and critical appraisal of metagenomic and culture studies in hidradenitis suppurativa.

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), also known as acne inversa, is a chronic inflammatory skin disease with still largely unknown pathogenesis. While infectious organisms have been identified in lesions of the disease since the 1980s, questions remain over the role that bacteria and microbiome play. Recent studies using 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequencing and larger culture-based studies have begun to paint a clearer picture of the microbial world of HS. With this systematic review, we summarize all the work that has been done to date in HS bacteriology, analyse potential pitfalls and limitations of

[The contribution of the intestinal microbiome to the formation of the general profile of bacterial DNA in the blood of obese children].

UNLABELLED: Obesity is a multifactorial disease. The gut microbiome disturbances play a significant role in the development of obesity, but emerging data point to a blood microbiome and its association with obesity and other pathologies. Bacterial DNA in the blood represents a pathogen-associated molecular pattern capable of activating the immune system and thereby triggering a cascade of inflammatory responses. The question remains open as to where the bacterial DNA originates, which biotopes shape it, and what role the gut microbiome plays in forming the pool of bacterial DNA in blood. The a

Immunomodulatory diet in pediatric age.

In the last few decades, the importance of a functioning immune system and health status has become more evident. Multiple factors are able to influence the development of chronic diseases and diet is one of the most important environmental factors. Evidence demonstrates that dietary patterns high in fat and low in fiber are associated with the development of non-communicable diseases. Moreover, optimal nutritional status can modulate immune maturation and response to inflammation. During inflammatory conditions, nutritional deficiencies may occur, establishing a vicious circle, consequently a

Metagenomic analysis of double-stranded DNA viruses in healthy adults.

BACKGROUND: The Human Microbiome Project (HMP) was undertaken with the goal of defining microbial communities in and on the bodies of healthy individuals using high-throughput, metagenomic sequencing analysis. The viruses present in these microbial communities, the 'human virome', are an important aspect of the human microbiome that is particularly understudied in the absence of overt disease. We analyzed eukaryotic double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) viruses, together with dsDNA replicative intermediates of single-stranded DNA viruses, in metagenomic sequence data generated by the HMP. 706 samples fr

Exploring the skin mycobiome in intensive care patients: a pilot study on fungal diversity from axillary and groin swabs.

The skin mycobiome is a largely unexplored component of the human microbiome, especially in critically ill patients. Fungal colonisation in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) may be influenced by underlying comorbidities and hospital-related risk factors, potentially impacting patient outcomes. This pilot study aimed to characterize the diversity and abundance of skin fungi in ICU patients during their first week of hospitalization. A total of 35 ICU patients were recruited and divided into two groups: Group 1 (patients with 1-2 comorbidities and ICU risk factors) and Group 2 (patients with more th

Frontiers in the physiology of male pattern androgenetic alopecia: beyond the androgen horizon.

Male pattern androgenetic alopecia (mpAGA), the most common form of hair loss in men, represents a heritable, androgen-dependent complex trait distinct from female pattern hair loss. Despite the psychosocial burden of mpAGA in some affected individuals and associations with other morbidities, we portray mpAGA as an essentially physiological phenomenon in which defined hair follicle (HF) populations in developmentally preprogrammed scalp skin regions undergo a dramatic, but reversible (mini)organ transformation in genetically predisposed individuals. Histologically, mpAGA exhibits progressive H

Chronic UVB exposure induces hepatic injury in mice: Mechanistic insights from integrated multi-omics.

Chronic UVB exposure poses a significant threat to both skin and visceral health. In recent years, the adverse role of chronic UVB exposure in liver health has been suggested but not fully elucidated. This study aims to comprehensively investigate the effects of chronic UVB exposure on liver health in male SKH-1 hairless mice and clarify potential mechanisms through multi-omics approaches. The findings suggested that 10-week chronic skin exposure to UVB not only triggers hepatic inflammation and oxidative stress but also, more importantly, results in lipid metabolism abnormalities in the liver

Filaggrin and beyond: New insights into the skin barrier in atopic dermatitis and allergic diseases, from genetics to therapeutic perspectives.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is the most common inflammatory skin disease worldwide, affecting 20% of children and 5% of adults. One critical component in the pathophysiology of AD is the epidermal skin barrier, with its outermost layer, the stratum corneum (SC), conferring biochemical properties that enable resilience against environmental threats and maintain homeostasis. The skin barrier may be conceptualized as a key facilitator of complex interactions between genetics, host immunity, the cutaneous microbiome, and environmental exposures. The key genetic risk factor for AD development and persis

Oral PHGG ameliorates atopic dermatitis-like dermatitis with concurrent modulation of colonic IgA and cecal microbiota: implications for the gut-skin axis.

BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is increasingly recognized as a systemic inflammatory disorder linked to intestinal immune and microbiome dysregulation. However, whether dietary galactomannan fibers can mitigate AD through coordinated modulation of the gut-skin axis remains unexplored. This study investigated the anti-atopic potential of orally administered partially hydrolyzed guar gum (PHGG), a low-viscosity, fermentable galactomannan enriched in low-mass oligosaccharides (mannose/galactose ratio of 1.87). RESULTS: In TNF-α/IFN-γ-stimulated HaCaT keratinocytes, PHGG (100-400 μg mL-1) sup

Skin Microbiota: Mediator of Interactions Between Metabolic Disorders and Cutaneous Health and Disease.

Metabolic disorders, including type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), obesity, and metabolic syndrome, are systemic conditions that profoundly impact the skin microbiota, a dynamic community of bacteria, fungi, viruses, and mites essential for cutaneous health. Dysbiosis caused by metabolic dysfunction contributes to skin barrier disruption, immune dysregulation, and increased susceptibility to inflammatory skin diseases, including psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, and acne. For instance, hyperglycemia in T2DM leads to the formation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs), which bind to the receptor f

Unveiling the skin microbial guardians and assailants in psoriasis subtypes: a Mendelian randomization study.

Previous studies have shown an association between skin microbiota and psoriasis, but the causal relationship between skin microbiota and different psoriasis subtypes remains unexplored. Our study employed the Mendelian randomization (MR) method, using summary statistics from Genome-Wide Association Studies, to investigate the causal relationships between skin microbiota and different subtypes of psoriasis. The inverse variance weighted (IVW) method served as the primary method in our MR study. The MR-Egger intercept test, Cochran's Q test, MR-PRESSO test, and leave-one-out analysis were condu
