OBJECTIVE: To describe the sleep patterns of early cocaine abstinence in chronic users by polysomnographic and subjective measures.
METHODS: 28 cocaine-dependent participants (ages 24-55) underwent polysomnographic sleep (PSG) recording on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd weeks of abstinence on a research dedicated inpatient facility. Objective measures of total sleep time, total REM time, slow wave sleep, sleep efficiency and a subjective measure (sleep quality) along with demographic data were collected from three different long term research studies over a five year period. Data were reanalysed to all

Late-life depression and dementia of the Alzheimer's type both have profound, although different, effects on electroencephalographic (EEG) sleep patterns. Thus, while depression is associated with REM sleep disinhibition and extreme sleep fragmentation (e.g., sleep onset REM periods and early morning awakenings), Alzheimer's disease is associated with deficits in the production of phasic activity during sleep (e.g., rapid eye movements and K-complexes) and with increased rates of sleep-disordered breathing. These differences have been shown to be reliable in large numbers of patients during th

Parkin gene mutations cause a juvenile parkinsonism. Patients with these mutations may commonly exhibit REM sleep behaviour disorders, but other sleep problems (insomnia, sleepiness, restless legs syndrome) have not been studied. The aim of this study was to evaluate the sleep-wake phenotype in patients with two parkin mutations, compared with patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease (iPD). Sleep interview and overnight video-polysomnography, followed by multiple sleep latency tests, were assessed in 11 consecutive patients with two parkin mutations (aged 35-60 years, from seven families)

Expired ventilation (VE), tidal volume (VT), frequency (f), and alveolar PCO2 (PACO2) were examined in six normal infants at 41 to 52 weeks post-conceptional age and in two infants who were apneic at birth. Their response to breathing 5% carbon dioxide in air and to 100% oxygen in quiet sleep were compared to those in rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. VE in normal infants was 259 ml/kg/min in REM and 200.2 ml/kg/min in quiet sleep with the difference being due to decreased carbon dioxide production and to decreased dead space. VE increased 34.4 ml/kg/min/mm Hg of PCO2 elevation with 5% carbon di

Study ObjectivesThe diagnosis of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (RBD) is of clinical interest, as there is a high rate of future conversion to Parkinson's disease and related neurodegenerative disorders. The clinical standard for diagnosis of RBD relies on human scoring of REM sleep without atonia (RSWA) via polysomnography, which is labor-intensive, costly, and unsuitable for long-term monitoring. Existing (semi-)automatic detection methods often depend on prior manual annotation of REM or suffer from low REM classification performance in this population. We here propose a f

The sleep-wake cycle is a complex process that includes wake (W), non-rapid-eye-movement (NREM) and rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep. Each phase is regulated by specialized brain structures that, by means of different neurotransmitters, maintain the constant expression of the sleep-wake cycle. Molecules like orexin, serotonin, noradrenaline, histamine, for waking; GABA, adenosine, prostaglandins, for NREM sleep and acetylcholine and glutamate for REM sleep, among other molecules are responsible for the expression and maintenance of each phase. When the endocannabinoid system was being described

The association of Prader-Willi-syndrome with breathing disturbances such as sleep apnea syndrome and/or hypoxemia during REM sleep, REM sleep abnormalities and excessive daytime sleepiness is well known. We report the case of an 11-year-old boy who presented with Prader-Willi syndrome, obesity (body mass index [BMI] = 45.6), severe obstructive sleep apnea syndrome and significant daytime sleepiness on multiple sleep latency test. Behavioral disorders did not allowed the use of continuous positive pressure in this patient. Therefore, clomipramine (20 mg per day) was administered. Sleep examina…

The neurophysiologic basis of near death experience (NDE) is unknown. Clinical observations suggest that REM state intrusion contributes to NDE. Support for the hypothesis follows five lines of evidence: REM intrusion during wakefulness is a frequent normal occurrence, REM intrusion underlies other clinical conditions, NDE elements can be explained by REM intrusion, cardiorespiratory afferents evoke REM intrusion, and persons with an NDE may have an arousal system predisposing to REM intrusion. To investigate a predisposition to REM intrusion, the life-time prevalence of REM intrusion was stud

PURPOSE: The autonomic nervous system may mediate acute apnoea-induced atrial fibrillation (AF). We compared cardiac autonomic function in paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF) patients with and without obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA).
METHODS: Case control study of 101 patients with PAF recruited at two tertiary centres. All patients underwent in-laboratory polysomnography. ECG signal demonstrating "steady state" sinus rhythm (i.e. with arrhythmic beats and respiratory events excluded) was included in the analysis. Cardiac autonomic function was assessed via measures of heart rate variability

BACKGROUND: The pathogenesis of neonatal jitteriness (JT) remains unknown. Neonatal JT could be one of the symptoms associated with drug withdrawal syndrome due to maternal medication. To study the influence of chemicals and environment on brain development in the fetal period, Swaab and Mirmiran proposed "behavioral teratology". JT could be one of the targets for this concept. Swaab and Mirmiran postulated that rapid-eye-movement sleep (REM sleep) is useful for studying behavioral teratology.
AIM: We aimed to determine the neurophysiological alterations in infants with JT by investigating RE

The central effects of the newly-developed antihistamines (H1-receptor antagonists) loratadine, astemizole, mequitazine and terfenadine were evaluated by studying brain electrical activity (EEG), sleep-waking patterns and behavior in the cat. The different stages of the sleep-waking cycle, i.e., wakefulness (W), spindle sleep (SS), slow wave sleep (SWS) and REM sleep (REM) were evaluated. The power spectrum analysis of the EEG was obtained by a computerized technique. For comparison, the sedating agent diphenhydramine was examined. Given at 3 mg/kg orally, a dose slightly above that effective

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Treating ovariectomized rats with physiological levels of estradiol and/or progesterone affects aspects of both baseline (24 h) sleep and recovery (18 h) sleep after 6 h of sleep deprivation. We have extended the analysis of these effects by examining several additional parameters of sleep architecture using the same data set as in our previous study (Deurveilher et al. SLEEP 2009;32(7):865-877).
DESIGN: Sleep in ovariectomized rats implanted with oil, 17 β-estradiol and/or progesterone capsules was recorded using EEG and EMG before, during, and after 6 h of sleep deprivatio

BACKGROUND: The neuropeptides hypocretin-1 and -2 (hcrt-1 and -2, also known as orexin A and B) are crucially involved in the regulation of sleep/wake states. On the one hand, the sleep-wake disorder narcolepsy can be caused by an hcrt-1 deficiency. On the other, intracerebral administration of hcrt-1 produces an increase in wakefulness at the expense of REM sleep in normal and narcoleptic animals. In humans intranasal administration has been shown to effectively deliver neuropeptides directly to the central nervous system. We hypothesised that the intranasal application of hcrt-1 increases wa

Physical activity has been found to alter sleep architecture, but these effects have been studied predominantly in the laboratory and the generalizability of these findings to naturalistic environments and longer time intervals, as well as their psychological effects, have not been evaluated. Recent technological advancements in wearable devices have made it possible to capture detailed measures of sleep outside the lab, including timing of specific sleep stages. In the current study, we utilized photoplethysmography coupled with accelerometers and smartphone ambulatory assessment to collect d

In the present study, we investigated the changes of sleep parameters in rats with chronic constriction injury (CCI) under aversive conditions. The electroencephalogram (EEG) in the frontal cortex of CCI rats and electromyogram (EMG) were measured over 6 h by placing rats on sandpaper as an aversive condition, to compare with rats placed on sawdust. Six days after CCI surgery, the rats exhibited significant mechanical allodynia, and also had neuropathic pain. When rats were placed on sawdust, no significant difference was observed between the CCI group and sham-operated control group in sleep

Repeated corticosterone (CORT) injections reliably produce depressive-like behavior in rodents. Our previous study showed that sleep parameters were altered in rats after daily injections of CORT for 7 days, and sleep disturbances appeared to be correlated with depressive-like behavior. The aim of the present study was to investigate time-dependent correlations between changes in sleep parameters and the formation of depressive-like behavior in rats after more prolonged treatment with CORT. Rats received daily injections of CORT (40 mg/kg, s.c.) for 7, 14, or 21 days. Electroencephalographic r

We present a comprehensive review of sleep studies performed in patients with brain lesions complemented by 16 additional personal selected cases and by discussion of the corresponding animal data. The reader is cautioned about the risk of establishing an erroneous correlation between abnormal sleep and a given disorder due to the important inter and intra variability of sleep parameters among individuals. Salient points are stressed: the high frequency of post-stroke sleep breathing disorders is becoming increasingly recognised and may, in the near future, change the way this condition is man

Ventilation and brain blood flow (BBF) were simultaneously measured during carbon monoxide (CO) inhalation in awake and sleeping goats up to HbCO levels of 40%. Unilateral BBF, which was continuously measured with an electromagnetic flow probe placed around the internal maxillary artery, progressively increased with CO inhalation in the awake and both sleep stages. The increase in BBF with CO inhalation during rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep (delta BBF/delta arterial O2 saturation = 1.34 +/- 0.27 ml X min-1 X %-1) was significantly greater than that manifested during wakefulness (0.87 +/- 0.14)

Ventilation and gas exchange during overnight sleep was studied in a group of seven patients with severe interstitial lung disease (mean vital capacity 50%, mean diffusing capacity 46% predicted), to see whether clinically significant oxygen desaturation occurred. Patients with a history of loud snoring or clinically significant airflow obstruction were excluded. Sleep was fragmented in these patients, but all achieved rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. All patients showed episodes of oxygen desaturation during sleep--mean (SEM) awake arterial oxygen saturation (SaO2) was 92.9% (0.3%) compared wi

The shape of the cranium is one of the most notable physical changes induced in domestic dogs through selective breeding and is measured using the cephalic index (CI). High CI (a ratio of skull width to skull length > 60) is characterized by a short muzzle and flat face and is referred to as brachycephaly. Brachycephalic dogs display some potentially harmful changes in neuroanatomy, and there are implications for differences in behavior, as well. The path from anatomy to cognition, however, has not been charted in its entirety. Here, we report that sleep-physiological markers of white-matter l
