Experience-dependent neural plasticity enables the brain to adapt to diverse and dynamic environments by reshaping circuits. In the adult visual system, this plasticity can be elicited by repeated sensory stimuli; however, its temporal dynamics and underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we investigated the regulation of visual response potentiation induced by repeated light flashes in the primary visual cortex of awake adult mice. Our findings revealed two distinct temporal phases of potentiation: a rapid phase occurring within seconds and a cumulative phase developing over hours to days.

Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS), one of the most severe childhood epileptic encephalopathies, was described stepwise in the United States and France. Gibbs (1938) and Gibbs et al. (1939) identified a characteristically slow spike-and-wave pattern, which they called the 'petit mal variant,' as opposed to typical spike-and-waves at 3 Hz observed in 'petit mal.' Shortly after participating in the description of this pattern, William G. Lennox reported children with 1) diffuse slow spike-and-waves, 2) mental deficiency, and 3) three seizure types with-myoclonic jerks-a variant of petit mal absences

INTRODUCTION: Memory-associated neural circuits produce oscillatory events including theta bursts (TBs), sleep spindles (SPs), and slow waves (SWs) in sleep electroencephalography (EEG). Changes in the "coupling" of these events may indicate early Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathogenesis.
METHODS: We analyzed 205 aging adults using single-channel sleep EEG, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) AD biomarkers, and Clinical Dementia Rating® (CDR®) scale. We mapped SW-TB and SW-SP neural circuit coupling precision to amyloid positivity, cognitive impairment, and CSF AD biomarkers.
RESULTS: Cognitive impairmen

Background/Objectives: Factors underlying excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) are not fully understood. We investigated whether polysomnography (PSG) parameters differed between non-sleepy and sleepy (based on the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS)) OSA patients with the same disease severity, which may play a role in the presence of EDS. Methods: A total of 1307 patients, without cardiovascular, metabolic, respiratory, or inflammatory comorbidities, diagnosed with OSA (apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) ≥ 5 per hour of sleep) with type 1 PSG were included. Based on the AHI

EEG abnormalities in migraine have been reported by a number of authors during the last 50 years. Prevalences vary considerably in the older literature. A number of unspecific rhythms related to drowsiness or hyperventilation have probably been counted as "abnormal", and the reported numbers of definitely abnormal EEG rhythms have been consistently low. In a few controlled and blinded studies, however, slight excess of various EEG rhythms has been found in migraine patients. Similar prevalences of interictal EEG abnormalities have generally been found in patients with classic and common migrai

Sleep architecture is characterized by dynamic transitions between non-rapid eye movement (NREM) and rapid eye movement (REM) stages, each defined by distinct oscillatory signatures. Although quantitative EEG has been widely used to study primary insomnia (PI), reported findings remain inconsistent, partly due to limited consideration of cortical regional differences, sleep-stage specificity, and sex-related variability. This study integrates spectral power analysis with explainable machine learning to provide a comprehensive characterization of neural dynamics in PI. EEG recordings from 100 a

BACKGROUND: Low arousal threshold plays a part in the pathogenesis of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and may be improved by sedatives. Sedative antidepressants are frequently prescribed for stroke patients due to their high prevalence of insomnia and depression. However, the effect of sedative antidepressants on the severity of OSA in stroke patients has not been studied well.
METHODS: In a double-blinded randomized crossover pilot study, 22 post-acute ischemic stroke patients (mean age, 61.7 ± 10.6 y) with OSA received 100 mg of trazodone or a placebo just before polysomnography, with approxi

PURPOSE: Metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease are strongly associated with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS), which causes substantial changes to normal circadian physiological functions, including metabolic pathways. Because core clock genes are known to be modulated by sleep/vigilance cycles, we asked whether the expression level of mRNA coding for clock genes is altered in non-treated OSAS patients and if it can be corrected by standard continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment.
METHODS: Peripheral blood was collected from male patients diagnosed with severe OSAS

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) patients have increased upper airway muscle activity, including such lingual muscles as the genioglossus (GG), geniohyoid (GH), and hyoglossus (HG). This adaptation partially protects their upper airway against obstructions. Rodents are used to study the central neural control of sleep and breathing but they do not naturally exhibit OSA. We investigated whether, in chronically instrumented, behaving rats, disconnecting the GH and HG muscles from the hyoid (H) apparatus would result in a compensatory increase of other upper airway muscle activity (electromyogram, E

The aim of this study was to determine the influence of neonatal focal cerebral hypoxia-ischemia (HI) on sleep-waking pattern, electrocorticogram (ECoG) power spectra and locomotor activity (LA) in adult Wistar rats. Seven-day old pups were subjected to permanent unilateral ligation of the common carotid artery and transient hypoxia (8% O2). At 10 weeks of age, the extent of brain damages was evaluated by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and homogenous injured animals were selected before chronic implantation of radiotelemetry device. Using a single ECoG recording channel method, waking (W), p

BACKGROUND: There are only few data about the influence of interfaces on restorative sleep and required CPAP/APAP levels in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). Observations of obstructive apnoeas when using oro-nasal masks with normalisation of respiratory disturbance index (RDI) under nasal masks and of non-restorative sleep under oro-nasal masks in spite of normal RDI led to a registration of patients with such findings.
METHODS: This study is a cohort analysis (June 1, 2006 to April 30, 2014) of patients with OSA using an oro-nasal mask and normalisation of the RDI after changing

Theophylline is effective in the treatment of central apneas and periodic breathing. In obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS), results of pharmacological monotherapy with theophylline are inconsistent. The present study investigates whether additional theophylline in patients with OSAS and continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy might improve ventilation, lower effective CPAP pressure levels or affect sleep architecture. Patients with mild to moderate OSAS (mean apnea index [AI] 12.8+/-11.7) and CPAP therapy (Autoset system; n=16, all male) received either 900 mg of oral sustained

RATIONALE: The effects of antidepressants on sleep in depression have been extensively investigated, although to date there have been relatively few studies of newer drug classes such as specific serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). All reported studies on SSRIs have been conducted in patients admitted to sleep laboratories and very few longitudinal studies have continued to measure sleep beyond 5 weeks of treatment. The growing trend towards outpatient and community care has highlighted the need for studies of sleep in depression in a more naturalistic setting, and during longer periods of

In the field of consciousness science, there is a tradition to categorize certain states such as slow-wave non-REM sleep and deep general anesthesia as "unconscious". While this categorization seems reasonable at first glance, careful investigations have revealed that it is not so simple. Given that (1) behavioral signs of (un-)consciousness can be unreliable, (2) subjective reports of (un-)consciousness can be unreliable, and, (3) states presumed to be unconscious are not always devoid of reported experience, there are reasons to reexamine our traditional assumptions about "states of unconsci

How does an animal know where it is when it stops moving? Hippocampal place cells fire at discrete locations as subjects traverse space, thereby providing an explicit neural code for current location during locomotion. In contrast, during awake immobility, the hippocampus is thought to be dominated by neural firing representing past and possible future experience. The question of whether and how the hippocampus constructs a representation of current location in the absence of locomotion has been unresolved. Here we report that a distinct population of hippocampal neurons, located in the CA2 su
