[Neuroanatomical basis of pervasive developmental disorders and its pathogenesis].

Since recent literature has argued to give up a single explanation covering diverse symptom defining autism-spectrum disorder (ASD), our study focuses on deficits in social cognition as the target of phenotype in searching cause for ASD. First study revealed that the gray matter volume reductions in several regions important for social cognition were common to monozygotic twins with Asperger's syndrome as compared with healthy matched controls. The findings suggest a contribution of shared genetic factors to underlying the structural abnormalities in ASD. Second study showed that the young hea

A Rare Cause of Autism Spectrum Disorder: Megaconial Muscular Dystrophy.

Megaconial congenital muscular dystrophy (OMIM 602541) is defined by early-onset hypotonia, mildly elevated serum creatine kinase (CK) levels, muscle wasting, cardiomyopathy, psychomotor developmental delay and intellectual disability. The disease is caused by loss-of-function mutations in Choline kinase beta gene (CHKB) and has specific muscle biopsy findings. Here we investigate two patients with weakness of proximal muscles and generalized muscle atrophy, skin changes, agressiveness, social communication and empathy difficulties. Both patients had mildly elevated serum CK levels. Whole exom

Psychometric Properties of Spanish Adaptation of the PDD-MRS Scale in Adults with Intellectual Developmental Disorders: The EVTEA-DI Scale.

Strategies for the early detection of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) in people with intellectual developmental disorder (IDD) are urgently needed, but few specific tools have been developed. The present study examines the psychometric properties of the EVTEA-DI, a Spanish adaptation of the PDD-MRS, in a large randomized sample of 979 adults with IDD. Factorial solution analysis suggested a three-factor solution (stereotyped behavior, communication, and social behavior). The EVTEA-DI showed good reliability and convergent validity when compared to the Childhood Autism Rating Scale. Discriminat

Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) for Movement Disorders: An Experience in Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia (HUSM) Involving 12 Patients.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) was first introduced in 1987 to the developed world. As a developing country Malaysia begun its movement disorder program by doing ablation therapy using the Radionics system. Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia a rural based teaching hospital had to take into consideration both health economics and outcomes in the area that it was providing neurosurgical care for when it initiated its Deep Brain Stimulation program. Most of the patients were from the low to medium social economic groups and could not afford payment for a DBS implant. We concentrated our DBS service

Managing repetitive behaviours in young children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD): pilot randomised controlled trial of a new parent group intervention.

Early intervention for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) tends to focus on enhancing social-communication skills. We report the acceptability, feasibility and impact on child functioning of a new 8 weeks parent-group intervention to manage restricted and repetitive behaviours (RRB) in young children with ASD aged 3-7 years. Forty-five families took part in the pilot RCT. A range of primary and secondary outcome measures were collected on four occasions (baseline, 10, 18 and 24 weeks) to capture both independent ratings and parent-reported changes in RRB. This pilot established that parents were w

Family psychoeducation and schizophrenia: a review of the literature.

Family psychoeducation has emerged as a treatment of choice for schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depression, and other disorders. More than 30 randomized clinical trials have demonstrated reduced relapse rates, improved recovery of patients, and improved family well-being among participants. Interventions common to effective family psychoeducation programs have been developed, including empathic engagement, education, ongoing support, clinical resources during periods of crisis, social network enhancement, and problem-solving and communication skills. Application of family psychoeducatio

Developmental outcome with and without successful intervention.

A review of the literature on the developmental outcome of medically and surgically treated symptomatic infantile spasms (IS) indicates that poor seizure control, severe mental retardation, and marked behavioral disorders are found at long-term outcome of symptomatic IS. The 2-year outcome findings of the UCLA Pediatric Epilepsy Surgery Research Group in children with symptomatic infantile spasms and in children with early onset intractable symptomatic epilepsy other than IS (non-IS) demonstrate impaired development of cognition, language, and social communication despite improved seizure cont

Neurodevelopmental changes in Drosophila melanogaster are restored by treatment with lutein-loaded nanoparticles: Positive modulation of neurochemical and behavioral parameters.

Neurodevelopmental disorders, such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), are characterized by persistent changes in communication and social interaction, as well as restricted and stereotyped patterns of behavior. The complex etiology of these disorders possibly combines the effects of multiple genes and environmental factors. Hence, exposure to insecticides such as imidacloprid (IMI) has been used to replicate the changes observed in these disorders. Lutein is known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties and is associated with neu

Social support mediates the associations of Information and Communication Technology use with mental health in Chinese COVID-19 patients during hospital quarantine.

BACKGROUND: Information and communication technology (ICT) use can be a double-edged sword for mental health. This study aimed to examine whether different types of ICT use were diversely associated with mental health outcomes in hospital-quarantined patients during the COVID-19 pandemic, and to assess whether social support mediated these associations. METHODS: This cross-sectional study involved hospital-quarantined COVID-19 patients from 10 March to 28 April 2022 in Shenzhen, China. Patients reported their ICT use, including online entertainment, contacting family/friends, reading online ne

Partnering with Churches to Conduct a Wide-Scale Health Screening of an Urban, Segregated Community.

West Side Alive (WSA) is a partnership among pastors, church members and health researchers with the goal of improving health in the churches and surrounding community in the West Side of Chicago, a highly segregated African American area of Chicago with high rates of premature mortality and social disadvantage. To inform health intervention development, WSA conducted a series of health screenings that took place in seven partner churches. Key measures included social determinants of health and healthcare access, depression and PTSD screeners, and measurement of cardiometabolic risk factors, i

Targeted drug screening for autism based on Cav1.2 calcium ion channel.

This study presents a targeted virtual drug screening approach for autism spectrum disorder (ASD), focusing on Cav1.2 calcium ion channels as potential therapeutic targets. ASD is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by impairments in social communication and behavior, with genetic factors playing a significant role. Cav1.2 channels have been implicated in the pathophysiology of ASD due to their role in regulating neuronal excitability and synaptic transmission. We employed computational methods to virtually screen a large database of compounds for their potential to modulate Ca

Combined the GABA-A and GABA-B receptor agonists attenuates autistic behaviors in a prenatal valproic acid-induced mouse model of autism.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is an immensely challenging developmental disorder characterized primarily by two core behavioral symptoms of social communication deficits and restricted/repetitive behaviors. Investigating the etiological process and identifying an appropriate therapeutic target remain as formidable challenges to overcome ASD due to numerous risk factors and complex symptoms associated with the disorder. Among the various mechanisms that contribute to ASD, the maintenance of excitation and inhibition balance emerged as a key factor to regulate proper functioning of neuronal cir

Work-related voice disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Dysphonia is the main symptom of the disorders of oral communication. However, voice disorders also present with other symptoms such as difficulty in maintaining the voice (asthenia), vocal fatigue, variation in habitual vocal fundamental frequency, hoarseness, lack of vocal volume and projection, loss of vocal efficiency, and weakness when speaking. There are several proposals for the etiologic classification of dysphonia: functional, organofunctional, organic, and work-related voice disorder (WRVD). OBJECTIVE: To conduct a literature review on WRVD and on the current Brazilian

Autism, an overwhelming condition: history, etiopathogenesis, types, diagnosis, therapy and prognosis.

Autism is defined as a neurologic developmental disorder affecting brain and behavior, becoming usually apparent before 3 years of age, with stable evolution and no remission. No neurologic morphologic abnormality was associated with the disease. Several types of disease being described, autism is part of a larger spectrum known as autism spectrum disorders (ASD), or pervasive developmental disorders (PDD). The disease was first described long before it was defined and it has received its modern name. Main cause in the development of autism is considered to be genetic, up to 90 %. However, env

Autistic Traits and Suicidal Thoughts, Plans, and Self-Harm in Late Adolescence: Population-Based Cohort Study.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the hypothesis that autism spectrum disorders (ASD) diagnosis and traits in childhood are associated with suicidal thoughts, plans and self-harm at 16 years, and that any observed associations are explained by depression at 12 years. METHOD: We examined associations between ASD diagnosis and 4 dichotomized ASD traits (social communication, pragmatic language, repetitive behavior, and sociability) with suicidal and nonsuicidal self-harm, suicidal thoughts, and suicidal plans at age 16 years in 5,031 members of the United Kingdom-based birth cohort study the Avon Longitudi

Combined frequency-tagging EEG and eye tracking reveal reduced social bias in boys with autism spectrum disorder.

Developmental accounts of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) state that infants and children with ASD are spontaneously less attracted by and less proficient in processing social stimuli such as faces. This is hypothesized to partly underlie social communication difficulties in ASD. While in some studies a reduced preference for social stimuli has been shown in individuals with ASD, effect sizes are moderate and vary across studies, stimuli, and designs. Eye tracking, often the methodology of choice to study social preference, conveys information about overt orienting processes but conceals covert

Cognitive-behavioral therapy for late-life anxiety: Similarities and differences between Veteran and community participants.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based treatment for anxiety; however, a growing body of research suggests that CBT effect sizes are smaller in Veteran samples. The aim of this study was to perform secondary data analyses of a randomized controlled trial of CBT for late-life generalized anxiety disorder compared with treatment as usual (TAU) in a Veteran (n = 101) and community-based (n = 122) sample. Veterans had lower income and less education than community participants, greater severity on baseline measures of anxiety and depression, poorer physical health, and higher rate
