Social determinants of health and aging outcomes in people aging with disability: Findings from the health and retirement study 2006-2020.

BACKGROUND: Social determinants of health (SDOH) significantly contribute to health outcomes and the aging process. Although substantial research has investigated the associations between SDOH and aging in the general population, their associations with aging-related outcomes among people aging with disability remain understudied. OBJECTIVE: To examine the associations between SDOH and two dimensions of aging, phenotypic and functional. METHODS: An observational study was conducted using data from the 2006-2020 waves of the Health and Retirement Study. People aging with disability were defin

Social support, nutrition and health among women in rural Bangladesh: complex tradeoffs in allocare, kin proximity and support network size.

Malnutrition among women of reproductive age is a significant public health concern in low- and middle-income countries. Of particular concern are undernutrition from underweight and iron deficiency, along with overweight and obesity, all of which have negative health consequences for mothers and children. Accumulating evidence suggests that risk for poor nutritional outcomes may be mitigated by social support, yet how social support is measured varies tremendously and its effects likely vary by age, kinship and reproductive status. We examine the effects of different measures of social suppor

Patient-reported outcomes and therapeutic affordances of social media: findings from a global online survey of people with chronic pain.

BACKGROUND: Patient-reported outcomes (PROs) from social media use in chronic disease management continue to emerge. While many published articles suggest the potential for social media is positive, there is a lack of robust examination into mediating mechanisms that might help explain social media's therapeutic value. This study presents findings from a global online survey of people with chronic pain (PWCP) to better understand how they use social media as part of self-management. OBJECTIVE: Our aim is to improve understanding of the various health outcomes reported by PWCP by paying close

Phenomenological perspectives on self-care in aging.

Self-care is a central concept in health care and may be considered as a means to maintain, restore, and improve one's health and well-being. When performed effectively, self-care contributes not only to human functioning but also to human structural integrity and human development (ie, to a dynamic and holistic state of health). Self-care as a clinical concept is relevant for health care professionals, and it should be meaningful to investigate it at a philosophical level and to further elaborate upon this concept. The aim of this article is to discuss and elaborate upon a phenomenological pe

The role of social support and integration for understanding socioeconomic disparities in self-rated health and hypertension.

This paper examines socioeconomic (socioeconomic status, SES) disparities in self-rated health and hypertension among 29,816 US adults aged 25 and older using data from the 2001 wave of the National Health Interview Survey. Our purpose is to examine how influential measures of social support and social integration are for each health outcome, and whether support and integration operate by mediating, or buffering, the effects of SES on health. Multivariate regression models show no significant influence of emotional support, but do indicate that many aspects of social integration are directly a

Impaired perception of affective prosody in remitted patients with bipolar disorder.

Patients with bipolar disorder present deficits in facial emotion perception, both during a manic episode as well as upon recovery. Our goal in the present study was to investigate the ability of remitted patients with bipolar disorder to perceive affective prosody and to explore potential differences in the specific emotions that are troublesome for them. Participants included 19 patients with bipolar disorder I, currently in remission, and 22 healthy comparison subjects, matched on age, education, and gender. An affective prosody test (APT) was administered to all participants. Bipolar patie

Can the Harter Self-Perception Profile for Adolescents (SPPA) be used as an indicator of psychosocial outcome in adolescents with chronic physical disorders?

To explore the Harter Self-Perception Profile for Adolescents (SPPA) as an indicator of psychosocial outcome in adolescents with chronic physical disorders, we administered the questionnaire along with other well-established measures of psychosocial outcome (the semistructured Child Assessment Schedule (CAS) interview and the Youth Self Report (YSR) and Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) questionnaires) to one group of diseased adolescents with good psychosocial adjustment (juvenile chronic arthritis, JCA) and one with a high level of psychosocial maladjustment (anorectal anomalies, ARA). Psychosocial functioning of transsexuals in Belgium.

Male-to-female (M-F) transsexuals differ consistently from female-to-male (F-M) transsexuals in their sociodemographic characteristics, cross-gender and sexual history and the degree to which personality disorder is concomitant to their transsexuality. As a group, female-to-male transsexuals are more homogeneous. Both groups are impaired in their mental functioning, but the male-to-female population is more mentally disordered. In a comparison between Dutch transsexuals and their Belgian counterparts, the latter were shown to have more mental problems.

Patient psychopathology and expressed emotion in schizophrenia.

The relationship of a full range of psychiatric symptoms to EE was examined in 40 men with BPRS and SANS diagnoses of schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder. Patients from high-EE families had significantly higher ratings of positive symptoms, anxious depression, and overall psychopathology, but not negative symptoms, than did those from low-EE families. In predicting relapses of schizophrenia, account may need to be taken of an interaction between subtle differences in symptoms and relatives' attitudes.

Perseveration in the connected speech of boys with Fragile X syndrome with and without autism spectrum disorder.

Verbal perseveration is a frequently reported language characteristic of males with Fragile X syndrome and may be a defining feature or hallmark of the syndrome. We compared the verbal perseveration of boys with Fragile X syndrome with (n  =  29) and without (n  =  30) autism spectrum disorder, boys with Down syndrome (n  =  27), and typically developing boys (n  =  25) at similar nonverbal mental ages. During a social interaction, boys with both Fragile X syndrome and autism spectrum disorder produced significantly more topic perseveration than all other groups. In social interaction as compa

Social indicators and physical abuse of women by intimate partners: a study of women in Zambia.

Intimate partner physical abuse (IPPA) of women is a societal problem with sinister implications on health. IPPA has been integrally linked to social status though the direction of association remains elusive, not the least in sub-Saharan Africa. This article investigated the association between IPPA and social status of women in Zambia. Data comprising 3,969 currently partnered women were retrieved from the 2001 Zambian Demographic and Health Survey and analyzed using chi-square test and logistic regression. IPPA augmented with low education, income-generating activity, access to information,…

The role of negativity bias and facial affect recognition in the increased odds of first-episode psychosis in ethnic minority populations: Findings from the EU-GEI case-control study.

Repeated exposure to social adversity may contribute to a biased, more negative interpretation of others' facial affect. This mechanism, termed negativity bias, may provide insight into the elevated rates of psychosis among ethnic minority groups. The current study examined whether negativity bias and facial affect recognition represent intermediary pathways linking ethnic minority status, a proxy for differential exposure to social adversity, with first-episode psychosis (FEP). Data were drawn from 1035 individuals with FEP and 1382 population-based controls across five European countries and
