Psychosocial impact of dysthymia: a study among married patients.

BACKGROUND: Unlike major depression, the psychosocial impact of dysthymia has received far less research attention. This study attempted to assess the psychosocial consequences of dysthymia. METHODS: The sample consisted of 30 married patients with DSM-IV dysthymic disorder and a matched control group of 30 married patients with recurrent major depressive disorder (RDD), diagnosed using structured interviews. Apart from ratings of severity of depression, assessments of psychosocial impact included quality of life (QOL), disability, perceived social support and marital adjustment. Psychosocial

Factors influencing indirect speech and language therapy interventions for adults with learning disabilities: the perceptions of carers and therapists.

BACKGROUND: The working context for speech and language therapists (SLTs) delivering interventions to adults who have a learning disability has changed following the reorganization of care provision from hospitals to the community. Consequently, SLTs often deliver their care within a social model of disability through indirect intervention in collaboration with carers. However, there has been little research into how this approach works in practice. AIMS: To gain insight into the working context by identifying the key factors that influence indirect SLT interventions as perceived by SLTs and

Patient perspective of tardive dyskinesia: results from a social media listening study.

BACKGROUND: Tardive dyskinesia (TD) is a persistent and potentially disabling movement disorder associated with prolonged exposure to dopamine receptor blocking agents such as antipsychotics. With the expanding use of antipsychotics, research is needed to better understand patient perspectives of TD, which clinical assessments may fail to capture. Social media listening (SML), which is recognized by the US FDA as a method that can advance ongoing efforts for more patient-focused drug development, has been used to understand patient experiences in other disease states. This is the first study t

Rating scale measures are associated with Noldus EthoVision-XT video tracking of behaviors of children on the autism spectrum.

BACKGROUND: Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) show unusual social behaviors and repetitive behaviors. Some of these behaviors, e.g., time spent in an area or turning rate/direction, can be automatically tracked. Automated tracking has several advantages over subjective ratings including reliability, amount of information provided, and consistency across laboratories, and is potentially of importance for diagnosis, animal models and objective assessment of treatment efficacy. However, its validity for ASD has not been examined. In this exploratory study, we examined associations betw

Factorial Structure Analysis of the Communities that Care Youth Survey (CTC-YS) in Colombian Adolescents.

The "Communities That Care Youth Survey" (CTC-YS) emerges from the Social Development Model and provides a comprehensive assessment of risks and protective factors in community, family, school, as well as individual and peer group domains. This has contributed to the prevention of drug use and other associated factors. The main objective of this study was to analyze the factorial structure of the CTC-YS in Colombian adolescents. A total of 2,963 volunteers between 12 and 19 years participated (mean = 14.25, SD = 1.53; 53% female). Construct validity was assessed through a confirmatory factor a

Understanding Technology Anxiety Among Older Adults with Chronic Diseases: The Roles of Perceived Ease of Use and Perceived Usefulness.

Purpose: To examine the associations of individual-level factors (eHealth literacy, chronic disease management self-efficacy, and coping style) and social-level factors (social support) with technology anxiety among older adults with chronic diseases, and to explore the potential indirect associations involving perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness. Method: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted among older adults with chronic diseases, in which 470 participants were surveyed and 456 valid responses were obtained. Measures included the eHealth Literacy Scale, Self-Efficac

Confirming the Factor Structure for the Children's Depression Inventory 2nd Edition in Gender Expansive Youth.

BACKGROUND: Rates of depression are significantly higher in transgender and gender expansive (TGE) youth than in cisgender youth. The Minority Stress Model theorizes that this disparity is due to the social difficulties that TGE youth face due to this minority status, such as family rejection or pressure to conceal their identity. Given the high incidence of depression in TGE youth, it is imperative to use a valid and reliable measure of depression for these youth. OBJECTIVE: This study sought to validate the latent factor structure of the youth self-report and caregiver-report of the Childre

Confronting the Illness of Recognition: Pain and Reparation Amongst Citizens Mutilated During Protests in Present-Day France.

Since the 1980s, French police forces have used less-lethal weapons (armes à létalité reduite)-meant to neutralize targets without killing them-to enforce order. At first mostly deployed against working-class and racialized citizens living in the margins of French cities, they have been used against wider sections of the population during recent demonstrations against neoliberal reform. These weapons can cause severe injury, with longstanding physical, social, and emotional consequences. Moreover, citizens who suffer these injuries endure a stigma of criminality, making widespread social recog

What women want to hear: the helpful and unhelpful comments reported by women struggling with infertility amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

INTRODUCTION: Many women struggling with infertility report that they frequently experience unhelpful social interactions with well-meaning loved ones and healthcare providers, contributing to a reluctance to confide in others about their infertility and emotional distress. However, it remains unclear what interaction content women experience as 'helpful' versus 'unhelpful,' making it difficult to provide concrete recommendations to the public about how best to support individuals struggling with infertility. METHODOLOGY: Eighty women from Canada and the United States (ages 20-45 years) whose

The consequences of sibling criminal legal system contact for family life.

OBJECTIVE: To consider whether one sibling's criminal legal system contact influences another's material conditions, social support, and mental health and behavioral problems. BACKGROUND: Sibling incarceration is both the most common form of familial incarceration in the United States, with more than one in four Americans reporting ever experiencing this event, and highly unequally distributed. Despite how prevalent and unequally distributed sibling criminal legal system contact is, little research considers the consequences of that event for family life. This study seeks to partially fill th

The influence of transportation, social norms, cultural identity, and affective disposition in transnational media enjoyment.

BACKGROUND: The globalization of the media market is forcing decision-makers to understand the psychological processes behind local audiences' enjoyment of foreign TV dramas. Transportation is a well-established psychological theory and framework utilized to elucidate and anticipate audience engagement and enjoyment in the cognitive process of experiencing a narrative text. Although there is a substantial body of literature on transportation and media enjoyment, there is a noticeable absence of studies on the relationship between audiences being "transported" into the narrative world of TV dra

Childhood exposure to emotional abuse and later life stress among Kenyan women: a mediation analysis of cross-sectional data.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: We explore whether perceived stress among Kenyan mothers is predicted by childhood exposure to emotional abuse - both witnessed among parents and experienced directly. Further, we explore whether this association is mediated by social support, family functioning and polygynous marriage. DESIGN: We used cross-sectional data from a systematic random sample (n = 1974) of mothers in semi-rural Kenya. METHODS: Data were collected using validated scales and trained interviewers. Analyses were conducted using bootstrapped structural equation models and fixed-effects linear

Effects of Instruction With the Accessible Literacy Learning App on Three Literacy Skills for Children Who Use Augmentative and Alternative Communication.

PURPOSE: Despite the inestimable importance of literacy skills for children who use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), many AAC users do not develop even basic literacy skills. The Accessible Literacy Learning (ALL) curriculum is evidence-based; however, little research has investigated the effects of instruction using the ALL app, and no research has examined parent-implemented adapted literacy instruction. METHOD: A single case study with a multiple-baseline across-participants design was used to investigate the effects of instruction using the ALL app, implemented by trained

Grading in Gerodontology: A Framework.

INTRODUCTION: Understanding and anticipating oral health deterioration in older adults requires more than describing their current oral and general health. Risk factors arising from oral, systemic and social domains strongly influence disease progression, care complexity and the ability to maintain function over time. We aimed to establish a framework for staging and grading oral health and disease in older adults, with grading systematically assessing and describing determinants of oral health deterioration. The developed framework is intended to support care planning, education, research and

[Do cognitive-behavioral group therapies in the treatment of anxiety disorders have an advantage over individual treatments?].

Group cognitive-behavior therapies in the treatment of anxiety disorders for adult psychiatric patients were historically developed on the basis of validated individual treatments. They have been widely employed and studied for social phobia, panic disorders, agoraphobia and obsessive-compulsive disorders, with generally positive results similar to those obtained with the corresponding individual methods. The cognitive-behavioural group treatments for generalized anxiety and posttraumatic stress disorders have not yet received sufficient validation. The results of evaluative research show that

Validation of the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS) in older Argentine adults.

UNLABELLED: Emotional functioning plays a key role in well-being and healthy ageing. The Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS) is one of the most widely used tools to assess affective dimensions, but few studies have validated its psychometric properties in older adults in Argentina. OBJECTIVE: To validate the factorial structure and psychometric properties of the PANAS in a sample of non-institutionalised older Argentine adults. METHODS: A total of 206 participants aged 60-91 years completed the PANAS along with measures of emotional, psychological, and social well-being, life satis

Filial Responsibility Toward Older Parents: A Systematic Review of the Tools Used.

Understanding filial responsibility toward older parents enhances the quality of communication between adult children and their older parents, improves the psychological well-being of the children, elevates the level of care provided to the older adults, and helps prevent their institutionalization. Various tools have been designed, albeit in a fragmented manner, to assess filial responsibility. The researchers conducted this study with the aim of examining and introducing existing tools regarding filial responsibility towards older parents. The study was carried out as a systematic review con
