UNLABELLED: The modern theory of hoarseness is that there are multifactorial etiologies contributing to the voice problem. The hypothesis of this study is that muscle tension dysphonia is multifactorial with various contributing etiologies.
METHODS: This project is a retrospective chart review of all patients seen in the Voice Speech and Language Service and Swallowing Center at our institution with a diagnosis of muscle tension (functional hypertensive) dysphonia over a 30-month period. A literature search and review is also performed regarding current and emerging concepts of muscle tension

BACKGROUND: Dysphagia is a prevalent condition affecting over 15 million adults in the United States, posing serious health risks and contributing to rising healthcare costs. Early evaluation, often initiated by speech-language pathologists (SLPs) using the modified barium swallow study (MBSS), is essential to identify underlying causes. Although SLPs have traditionally focused on oropharyngeal swallowing, emerging guidelines now support esophageal visualization during MBSS. However, standardized practices and consensus remain limited. This study hypothesizes that incidental esophageal retenti

BACKGROUND: Similar positive results (e.g. immediate decreases in stuttering frequency and a 60-80% recovery rate from stuttering) have been reported for numerous therapeutic protocols for treating childhood stuttering, many of which have been diametrically opposite in their orientations and implementations. For example, Johnson advocated indirect treatments that simply advocated refraining from drawing any negative attention to childhood disfluencies as persistent and chronic stuttering was thought to progress via negative parental reactions to normal disfluencies. In contrast, direct interve

PURPOSE: Learning how to spell and share ideas through written expression is an important life skill for all individuals, including those with minimal or no speech, who may use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). Teaching spelling and the development of written expression with individuals who need or use AAC is underexplored. The current study aimed to better understand the current state of service providers' experiences with teaching spelling and writing to students who use AAC, focusing on the lived experiences, current barriers, and perspectives of service providers who curren

PURPOSE: Dysphagia is a possible complication after anterior cervical spine surgery (ACSS). Studies indicate specific risk factors for dysphagia and that in a subset of patients, dysphagia post-ACSS is not transient. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of dysphagia after ACSS, investigate potential risk factors for its occurrence, assess modalities utilized to diagnose dysphagia, examine pertinent referral patterns, and explore the utilization of speech-language pathology services post-ACSS.
METHOD: This retrospective study was performed using data from a tertiary academic medical center …

PURPOSE: The diagnosis and treatment of childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) remains a clinical challenge for many speech-language pathologists (SLPs). Given this, it is imperative to understand how SLPs learn about CAS during graduate school and throughout their careers.
METHOD: In the current study, American Speech-Language-Hearing Association-certified SLPs who practice in the United States and work with young children completed a 32-item online survey. Survey items aimed to understand SLPs' experiences learning about CAS during graduate school and through continuing education (CE). Responden

BACKGROUND: Over 8 million children with disabilities live in Africa and are candidates for augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), yet formal training for team members, such as speech-language therapists and special education teachers, is extremely limited. Only one university on the continent provides postgraduate degrees in AAC, and other institutions provide only short modules at an undergraduate level. The need for an introductory training course on AAC that is accessible by university students continent-wide was identified. An online programme, namely an intelligent tutoring sy

BACKGROUND: Competent clinical reasoning forms the foundation for effective and efficient clinical swallowing examination (CSE) and consequent dysphagia management decisions. While the nature of initial CSEs has been evaluated, it remains unclear how new information gathered by speech-language therapists (SLTs) throughout a patient's acute-care journey is integrated into their initial clinical reasoning and management processes and used to review and revise initial management recommendations.
AIMS: To understand how SLTs' clinical reasoning and decision-making regarding dysphagia assessment a

Challenges providing cleft/craniofacial care in rural communities are often reported, leading to disparities in resources available to clinicians. The purpose of this study was to identify the impact of rurality on caseloads and practice patterns of speech-language pathologists (SLPs) regarding speech and velopharyngeal function for children with cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P). A national, survey of US-based SLPs (N = 359 respondents) investigated resources, comfort level, caseloads, and practice patterns for children with CL/P. Sub-county classifications that delineated levels of rurality wer

INTRODUCTION: Different professionals such as speech and language pathologists and voice scientists are involved in the evaluation of head and neck posture. Therefore, a reliable, time-efficient, and precise method of posture assessment is essential for use in clinical and research settings. Photogrammetry is one of the most commonly used methods to assess head and neck posture. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the intrarater reliability of the method with a large sample size and the interrater reliability by two different specialists (a physiotherapist and a speech and language p

Facial paralysis remains a vexing problem in the treatment of posterior cranial fossa tumors in children. Fortunately, current techniques are available to reconstruct the paralyzed face in restoring balance, symmetry, and amelioration of functional sequelae. The restoration of structure and function of the paralyzed face is tantamount to proper social integration and psychosocial rehabilitation. In addition, the facial nerve is important in preventing drying of the eyes, drooling, and speech abnormalities, among other functions. The most visible evidence of facial paralysis is stark asymmetry,

Pathological conditions such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or damage to the brainstem can leave patients severely paralyzed but fully aware, in a condition known as 'locked-in syndrome'. Communication in this state is often reduced to selecting individual letters or words by arduous residual movements. More intuitive and rapid communication may be restored by directly interfacing with language areas of the cerebral cortex. We used a grid of closely spaced, nonpenetrating micro-electrodes to record local field potentials (LFPs) from the surface of face motor cortex and Wernicke's area. From

BACKGROUND: Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) requires speech-language pathologists (SLPs) to have unique skills that may not be easily transferred from other practice areas. The introduction of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) also created a distinctive work context for Australian SLPs within the disability sector.
AIM: Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the self-perceived competence of Australian SLPs in AAC.
METHOD AND PROCEDURES: This study followed a sequential explanatory mixed methods approach. First, 203 SLPs completed a quantitative online surve

BACKGROUND: Second victim effects refer to experiences of severe adverse events and errors in healthcare that have a negative impact on healthcare professionals. Speech and language pathologists and respiratory therapists are involved in treating patients with dysphagia in intensive care and stroke units and are thus exposed to possible severe incidents related to choking, aspiration, resuscitation, palliative care, and death. Evidence of the detectability of the second victim phenomenon in this professional group remains limited-a gap addressed in this study.
METHODS: Using convenience sampl
