A qualitative study of the palliative care needs of primary care patients with COPD: Experiences of COPD patients, their families and healthcare professionals.

BACKGROUND: The majority of deaths from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) occur in low- and middle-income countries. Primary palliative care is commonly proposed as the best model to ensure access to appropriate care. However, the existing evidence on needs, models and outcomes comes from high-income settings. The purpose of the study was to determine the experiences of adults with COPD attending primary care, their informal caregivers and healthcare professionals to identify current care provided and gaps in this care in primary care settings in South Africa. METHODS: Cross-sectio

IMpleMenting Effective infection prevention and control in ReSidential aged carE (IMMERSE): protocol for a multi-level mixed methods implementation study.

BACKGROUND: Older people living in residential aged care facilities are at high risk of acquiring infections such as influenza, gastroenteritis, and more recently COVID-19. These infections are a major cause of morbidity and mortality among this cohort. Quality infection prevention and control practice in residential aged care is therefore imperative. Although appointment of a dedicated infection prevention and control (IPC) lead in every Australian residential aged care facility is now mandated, all people working in this setting have a role to play in IPC. The COVID-19 pandemic revealed inad

Assessment of the impact of implementation research on the Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL) elimination efforts in Nepal.

Nepal, Bangladesh, and India signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in 2005 to eliminate visceral leishmaniasis (VL) as a public health problem from the Indian subcontinent by 2015. By 2021, the number of reported VL cases in these countries had declined by over 95% compared to 2007. This dramatic success was achieved through an elimination programme that implemented early case detection and effective treatment, vector control, disease surveillance, community participation, and operational research that underpinned these strategies. The experience offered an opportunity to assess the contr

Offering recovery rather than punishment: Implementation of a law enforcement-led pre-arrest diversion-to-treatment program for adults with substance use disorders.

BACKGROUND: The opioid epidemic has strained the US criminal justice system. Law enforcement frequently encounters persons with substance use disorder (SUD). Law enforcement-led, pre-arrest diversion programs linking individuals with SUD to addiction treatment instead of arrest and prosecution has the potential to reduce crime, overdoses, and other community harms. We implemented a pre-arrest diversion-to-treatment program-the Madison Addiction Recovery Initiative (MARI)-from September 2017 to August 2020, and describe the key components of MARI's effective implementation. METHODS: Adults who

Attitudes of professional stakeholders towards implementation of reproductive genetic carrier screening: a systematic review.

Reproductive genetic carrier screening (RGCS) for hundreds of different genetic conditions is technically available for prospective parents, but these tests have not been integrated in a public health policy except for specific sub-groups. We aimed to provide an overview of the perspectives of multiple professional stakeholder groups in order to enhance a responsible implementation of population-based reproductive genetic carrier screening. We conducted a systematic literature search using eight online databases focussing on studies that were published from January 2009 to January 2021. We sel

Design and Iterative Development of Serious Exergames for Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder: Formative Multiple-Case Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) exhibit cognitive, motor, and social difficulties that affect engagement, causing developmental delays, behavioral challenges, and obesity-interrelated concerns in daily functioning and well-being. Although interactive interventions have incorporated physical activity, they often rely on limited physical involvement and lack iterative, expert-informed design, as built on pre-existing game frameworks. Physical activity is often operationalized as constrained input (eg, gestures or in-place actions) rather than exertion-intensive, whole-bo

Implementation, enforcement, and monitoring of tobacco advertising, promotion, and sponsorship (TAPS) laws in Ethiopia: Insights from a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco advertising and promotion remain major drivers of tobacco use, particularly at points of sale (PoS). Ethiopia has enacted comprehensive tobacco control laws, including bans on TAPS at PoS. However, little is known about how these laws are implemented, monitored, and enforced in practice. This study explored the facilitators and barriers to implementing, monitoring compliance with, and enforcing TAPS laws at PoS in Ethiopia. METHODS: Qualitative interviews with 41 key informants were conducted between December 2022 and January 2023 across 10 purposively selected cities. Par

Building the foundation for a modern patient-partnered infrastructure to study temporomandibular disorders.

BACKGROUND: Conflicting reports from varying stakeholders related to prognosis and outcomes following placement of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) implants gave rise to the development of the TMJ Patient-Led RoundTable initiative. Following an assessment of the current availability of data, the RoundTable concluded that a strategically Coordinated Registry Network (CRN) is needed to collect and generate accessible data on temporomandibular disorder (TMD) and its care. The aim of this study was therefore to advance the clinical understanding, usage, and adoption of a core minimum dataset for TMD

Synthesizing Core Outcome Sets for outcomes research in cohort studies: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Life course studies are designed to "collect once, use multiple times" for observational and, increasingly, interventional research. Core Outcome Sets (COS) are minimum sets developed for clinical trials by multi-stakeholder consensus methodologies. We aimed to synthesize published COS that might guide outcomes selection for early life cohorts with an interventional focus. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Medline, COMET, and CROWN for COS published before January 2021 relevant to four life stages (pregnancy, newborns, children <8 years, and parents (adults aged 18-50 years)). We synth

Lived Experience, Family, and Clinician Perspectives on Barriers to Adult Autism Diagnosis and Post-Diagnostic Supports: A Mixed-Methods Systematic Review.

UNLABELLED: Obtaining a late Autism diagnosis and post-diagnostic supports can be a long, complicated process. Prior research has explored the perspectives of those with lived experience, family members, and clinicians, but has not yet provided a comparison of their perspectives. This review integrates qualitative and quantitative literature on barriers to diagnosis and post-diagnostic supports from these three perspectives. We also examine barriers reported by gender-diverse and ethnic minority Autistic people. We searched Web of Science, PsycINFO, Embase, Medline, and ProQuest Dissertations

Acne scarring: protocol for development of a core outcome set for clinical trials.

INTRODUCTION: Acne scarring is one of the primary sequelae that affect patients with acne, with facial scarring occurring to some extent in 95% of patients with active acne. Subtypes include atrophic, hypertrophic and keloid scarring. Treatment options include topical and surgical approaches. Despite numerous clinical trials focusing on acne scarring treatments, the absence of standardised outcome reporting across these trials raises concerns in evaluating treatment methods. To address this issue, this project aims to develop a core set of outcomes which should be uniformly assessed in all cli
