[Prevalence of group B streptococcal colonization in pregnant women and their newborns based on the results of examination of patients in the Obstetric and Gynecology Department of the National Research Institute of Mother and Child--a pilot study].

UNLABELLED: Group B streptococcus is a main cause of perinatal infections and neonatal sepsis. In Poland there is no epidemiological data of … wabs of their neonate were obtained. RESULTS: 1678 pregnant women took part in our study. The GBS (streptococcus agalactiae) colonization was found in 331 women. The prevalence of pregnant women group B streptococcal colonization in the study is 19.7%. 70 of 203 neonates form mothers with positive results of our screening, had the GBS colonization confirmed. The prevalen …

Cytokine responses to group B streptococci induce nitric oxide production in respiratory epithelial cells.

Streptococcus agalactiae (group B streptococcus [GBS]) is a leading cause of neonatal pneumonia, sepsis, and meningitis. Early-onset GBS pneumonia is characterized by marked pulmonary epithelial and endothelial cell injury. Innate proinflammatory responses to GBS infection that may contribute to the respiratory pathology include the synthesis and release of cytokines, prostaglandins, and nitric oxide (NO). The hypothesis that NO is directly induced in lung epithelial cells by invading GBS or indirectly induced by cytokines released by GBS-infected mononuclear cells was tested. A549 transformed…

Serotype identification of group B streptococci by PCR and sequencing.

Group B streptococcus (GBS; Streptococcus agalactiae) is the most common cause of neonatal and obstetric sepsis and is an increasingly important cause of septicemia in elderly individuals and immunocompromised patients. Ongoing surveillance to monitor GBS serotype distribution will be needed to guide the development and use of GBS conjugate vaccines. We designed sequencing primers based on the previously published sequences of the capsular polysaccharide (cps) gene clusters to further define partial cps gene clusters for eight of the nine GBS serotypes (serotypes Ia to VII). Subsequently, we d…

[Epidemiology and pathogenesis of streptococcal infection].

The appearance of the "streptococcal toxic shock-like syndrome" led to a growing interest in infections caused by Streptococcus pyogenes (gr … red especially for developing countries with a high incidence of rheumatic fever. Infections due to Streptococcus agalactiae (group-B streptococci) are often underestimated though they have a first position in septicemia and meningitis of newborns. Taxonomy and nomenclature of streptococci are often changing; a list of the presently known species is presented in table I.

Quantitation of bacteria in cerebrospinal fluid and blood of children with meningitis and its diagnostic significance.

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) specimens from pediatric patients with meningitis were examined for their concentration of microbes and the relationship of this count to the bacteremia levels, microscopy results, and polymorphonuclear leukocyte concentration. A total of 2,031 consecutive CSF specimens were analyzed, of which 63 (3.1%) were positive by culture from the same number of patients. We observed that 85% of the total CSF specimens positive for Haemophilus influenzae type b, Streptococcus agalactiae, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Neisseria meningitidis had counts in excess of 10(3) CFU/ml, w…

The activity of cell-free supernatant of Lactobacillus crispatus M247: a promising treatment against vaginal infections.

Lactobacillus crispatus is renowned for its antimicrobial properties, and some strains are used to treat vaginal dysbiosis, although the mechanisms underlying the antimicrobial properties remain elusive. We isolated L. crispatus M247 (LcM247) from a commercially available probiotic product Crispact® and tested its antimicrobial activity against selected pathobionts such as Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus agalactiae, Enterococcus faecalis and Candida albicans using both cocultures and testing the antimicrobial activity of cell-free supernatant (CFS)…

Evaluation of the activity and molecular characterisation of bacteriocins produced by E. faecium and E. faecalis isolated from different hosts against public health-threating pathogens.

The aim of the study was to assess the activity and genetic background of bacteriocins of E. faecium and E. faecalis isolated from different hosts against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), E. faecium and E. faecalis with vancomycin (VRE) and high-level aminoglycoside (HLAR) resistance, Streptococcus agalactiae, and Listeria monocytogenes. The research was carried out using qualitative method and partially purified bacteriocins. The occurrence of 12 bacteriocin genes was examined and their sequences were analysed. Bacteriocins showing inhibitory activity against indicator stra…

Antibacterial Activity of a Phenylpropanoid from the Root Extract of Carduus leptacanthus Fresen.

BACKGROUND: The emergence and rapid spread of antimicrobial drug-resistance microorganisms exacerbate the treatment of infectious diseases, underscoring the importance of finding new, safe, and effective drugs. [Clinical relevance of antibiotic resistance in obstetrics and gynecology].

Antibiotic resistance of microorganisms that cause infections of the urogenital tract is a clinically relevant problem in obstetrics and gynecology. Due to methodological difficulties, resistance testing is rarely used for the management of these infections. Therefore, solid epidemiological data on resistance rates of most involved pathogens are scarce. Antibiotic resistance of several microorganisms appears to be increasing in various areas of the world, mainly Trichomonas vaginalis and Gardnerella vaginalis (metronidazole),Streptococcus agalactiae (macrolides, clindamycin), Mycoplasma homini…

Universal maternal testing for group B streptococcus in late pregnancy: process outcomes and alongside qualitative study for the GBS3 trial.

BACKGROUND: One in five pregnant women/birthing people carry group B streptococcus in the gut or genital tract, and over half of them will pass it to their child during pregnancy, labour (most commonly) or after birth. Most babies exposed to maternal GBS remain well, but 1 in 1750 newborns in the UK and Ireland develop early-onset GBS infection. Introducing routine testing for group B streptococcus (GBS) for all pregnant women and birthing people in late pregnancy may reduce cases of early-onset infection in the newborn but would likely increase the number of women given antibiotics during lab

The impact of nutritional immunity on Group B streptococcal pathogenesis during wound infection.

Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is a Gram-positive pathobiont that can cause adverse health outcomes in neonates and vulnerable adult populations. GBS is one of the most frequently isolated bacteria from diabetic (Db) wound infections but is rarely found in the non-diabetic (nDb) wound environment. Previously, RNA sequencing of wound tissue from Db wound infections in leprdb diabetic mice showed increased expression of neutrophil factors, and genes involved in GBS metal transport such as the zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn), and putative nickel (Ni) import systems. Here, we develop a Streptozotocin-induc

Group B Streptococcus Drives Major Transcriptomic Changes in the Colonic Epithelium.

Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is a leading cause of infant sepsis worldwide. Colonization of the gastrointestinal tract is a critical precursor to late-onset disease in exposed newborns. Neonatal susceptibility to GBS intestinal translocation stems from intestinal immaturity; however, the mechanisms by which GBS exploits the immature host remain unclear. β-hemolysin/cytolysin (βH/C) is a highly conserved toxin produced by GBS capable of disrupting epithelial barriers. However, its role in the pathogenesis of late-onset GBS disease is unknown. Our aim was to determine the contribution of βH/C to
