Major depression, adjustment disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder in terminally ill cancer patients: associated and predictive factors.

PURPOSE: Few studies have been conducted to elucidate the psychological distress of terminally ill cancer patients. This study attempted to determine the prevalence of adjustment disorders (AD), major depression (MD), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among terminally ill cancer patients, to identify factors that contribute to them, and to determine how they change longitudinally. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Consecutive terminally ill cancer patients were recruited. Patients were assessed for psychiatric disorders by structured clinical interview twice: once at the time of their registratio

Patients "At Risk" of Suffering from Persistent Complaints after Mild Traumatic Brain Injury: The Role of Coping, Mood Disorders, and Post-Traumatic Stress.

Although most patients recover fully following mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), a minority (15-25%) of all patients develop persistent post-traumatic complaints (PTC) that interfere with the resumption of previous activities. An early identification of patients who are at risk for PTC is currently performed by measuring the number of complaints in the acute phase. However, only part of this group will actually develop persisting complaints, stressing the need for studies on additional risk factors. This study aimed to compare this group of patients with many complaints with patients with fe

Interaction between early-life stress and FKBP5 gene variants in major depressive disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Gene-environment interaction contributes to the risks of psychiatric disorders. Interactions between FKBP5 gene variants and early-life stress may enhance the risk not only for mood disorder, but also for a number of other behavioral phenotypes. The aim of the present study was to review and conduct a meta-analysis on the results from published studies examining interaction between FKBP5 gene variants and early-life stress and their associations with stress-related disorders such as major depression and PTSD. METHODS: A literature search was conducted using PsychINFO and PubMed da

Prolonged grief disorder: Its co-occurrence with adjustment disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder in a bereaved Israeli general-population sample.

BACKGROUND: Prolonged grief disorder (PGD) is a new disorder included in the WHO International Classification of Diseases 11th version (ICD-11). This study is the first to use these new ICD-11 PGD guidelines to examine prevalence rates, predictors of PGD and disorder co-occurrence with other stress-related disorders in a survey of 544 bereaved Israelis. METHODS: Descriptive statistics, correlation, linear regression and mediation analysis examined the validity of the ICD-11 diagnostic algorithm. RESULTS: Prevalence of PGD in the Israeli population sample is low (2%). The prevalence rate of p

Existing and Potential Therapies for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Persistent Post-Concussion Symptoms in Intimate Partner Violence: A Narrative Review.

Background: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a pervasive medical concern affecting millions of people worldwide, with the majority being women. IPV is linked to a number of long-term physical and mental health consequences, including brain injuries and associated persistent post-concussion symptoms (PPCS) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Despite the high prevalence of these conditions, there is sparse literature assessing accessible and effective therapeutic avenues specific to IPV victim-survivors. Methods: This narrative review had two aims: to identify therapeutic studies addres

Post-Heroin Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Spectrum: Heroin Addiction as a Generator of Trauma Sensitisation in Everyday Life: A Perspective Review.

Background: Heroin addiction is associated with profound dysregulation of the endogenous opioid and stress response systems, yet current diagnostic frameworks may inadequately capture the traumatising aspects of this condition. This perspective proposes the concept of post-heroin post-traumatic stress spectrum (pH-PTSD/S) as a clinical syndrome emerging from chronic opioid-induced neurobiological and psychosocial dysregulation, even in the absence of Criterion A trauma. Methods: The authors review evidence from neuroendocrinology, behavioural neuroscience, and clinical psychopathology to suppo

Factors associated with post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms in the post-quarantine context of the COVID-19 pandemic in Peruvian medical students.

BACKGROUND: In March 2020, the Peruvian state introduced quarantine as a measure to control the spread of SARS-CoV-2. It has been suggested that being in quarantine is associated with the development of symptoms of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The present study aims to explore the factors associated with the development of PTSD in a post-quarantine context due to COVID-19 in medical students. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the factors associated with the development of post-quarantine PTSD symptoms in medical students from a Peruvian university. METHODS: Analytical cross-sectional study.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms Are Related to Cognition after Complicated Mild and Moderate Traumatic Brain Injury but Not Severe and Penetrating Traumatic Brain Injury.

Although post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been associated with worse cognitive outcomes after mild traumatic brain injury (TBI), its impact has not been evaluated after more severe TBI. This study aimed to determine whether PTSD symptoms are related to cognition after complicated mild, moderate, severe, and penetrating TBI. Service members (n = 137) with a history of complicated mild/moderate TBI (n = 64) or severe/penetrating TBI (n = 73) were prospectively enrolled from United States Military Treatment Facilities. Participants completed a neuropsychological assessment one year or mo

Social-single prolonged stress as an ether-free candidate animal model of post-traumatic stress disorder: Female and male outcomings.

BACKGROUND: Single Prolonged Stress (SPS) is a valid animal model that reflects the core of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) phenotypes. Although SPS has been a pivotal tool, it can bring ethics approval difficulties due to the use of ether as a stressor. The present study evaluated if changing a chemical (ether) with a social stressor resembles the PTSD hallmark symptoms. METHODS: Female and male young adult rats were distributed in Sham and Social-SPS groups. Rats in Social-SPS groups were subjected to stress, whereas those in Sham groups remained undisturbed. One set of animals perfor

Selective dopamine D3 receptor antagonism significantly attenuates stress-induced immobility in a rat model of post-traumatic stress disorder.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a debilitating psychiatric syndrome that occurs in individuals exposed to extremely threatening or traumatic events. In both animals and humans, dopamine (DA) function appears to be dysregulated in brain areas involved in the conditioned fear response(s) that underlie PTSD. In this study, we determined the effect of the selective DA D3 receptor antagonists YQA14A (6.25, 12.5 and 25 mg/kg i.p.) and SB-277011A (6 mg/kg i.p.) on tone-induced fear (assessed by measuring freeze time) in a modified version of the single-prolonged stress (SPS) model of PTSD in

Trajectories of Short-Term Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms in Patients with Post-Intensive Care Syndrome: A Longitudinal Observational Study.

PURPOSE: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a major psychiatric health issue among intensive care unit (ICU) survivors with post-intensive care syndrome (PICS). Although early PTSD intervention has been demonstrated to decrease the risk of progression from acute to chronic PTSD, information on the progression trajectory of short-term PTSD symptoms and modifiable risk factors in PICS patients is limited. This study aimed to explore the clinical progression trajectories of short-term PTSD symptoms and the associated factors in PICS patients by conducting a prospective longitudinal observat

Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing for post-stroke post-traumatic stress disorder: Case report using the three-phase approach.

Medically-induced post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is substantially more prevalent than PTSD in the general population. In people with stroke, it can impact as many as 23% of patients, with negative effects on mental health as well as stroke-related disability. Medically-induced PTSD may have unique features compared to other forms of PTSD, and therefore there is a pressing need to evaluate existing treatments for PTSD in this context. The current study reports on the feasibility, safety, and efficacy of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) for PTSD subsequent to a pontine

Structural brain correlates in major depressive disorder, anxiety disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder: a diffusion tensor imaging meta-analysis.

The high comorbidity of major depressive disorder (MDD), anxiety disorders (ANX), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) complicates the study of their structural neural correlates, particularly in white matter (WM) alterations. Using fractional anisotropy (FA), this meta-analysis aimed to identify both unique and shared WM characteristics for these disorders by comparing them with healthy controls (HC). The aggregated sample size across studies includes 3,661 individuals diagnosed with MDD, ANX, or PTSD and 3,140 HC participants. The whole-brain analysis revealed significant FA reductions

[Domestic violence in Iceland: Gender differences, associations with post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety, stress, happiness and social support].

UNLABELLED: Previous research: has shown that domestic violence is related to more symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, stress and anxiety, and lower happiness, and that social support can be crucial for survivors. However, limited research has been carried out on this topic in Iceland, particularly comparing men and women. The purpose of the current study is to examine the relationship between domestic violence victimization and symptoms of PTSD, depression, anxiety and stress, as well as happiness in a sample of Icelandic men and women, and to examine the role of so
