The therapeutic usage of botulinum toxin (Botox) in non-cosmetic head and neck conditions - An evidence based review.

Botulinum toxin (Botox) is an exotoxin produced from Clostridium botulinum. It blocks the release of acetylcholine from the cholinergic nerve end plates resulting in inactivity of the muscles or glands innervated. The efficacy of Botox in facial aesthetics is well established; however, recent literature has highlighted its utilization in multiple non-cosmetic medical and surgical conditions. The present article reviews the current evidence pertaining to Botox use in the non-cosmetic head and neck conditions. A literature search was conducted using MEDLINE, EMBASE, ISI Web of Science and the Co

[Diagnosis and management of priapism].

Priapism is defined as an erection for more than 4 h without sexual stimulation. The most common form with nearly 95% is the ischemic or low-flow form, which is very painful. The other 5% are comprised of nonischemic high-flow type usually caused by a blunt perineal trauma and the recurrent or intermittent so-called stuttering priapism. Anamnesis as well as physical and laboratory examination are important during the diagnostic workup. Patients who suffer from sickle cell anemia are predestined to develop priapism. Priapism constitutes a urological emergency because especially the low-flow typ

Arrhythmic song exposure increases ZENK expression in auditory cortical areas and nucleus taeniae of the adult zebra Finch.

Rhythm is important in the production of motor sequences such as speech and song. Deficits in rhythm processing have been implicated in human disorders that affect speech and language processing, including stuttering, autism, and dyslexia. Songbirds provide a tractable model for studying the neural underpinnings of rhythm processing due to parallels with humans in neural structures and vocal learning patterns. In this study, adult zebra finches were exposed to naturally rhythmic conspecific song or arrhythmic song. Immunohistochemistry for the immediate early gene ZENK was used to detect neura

Psychosocial morbidities in school going adolescent girls: a study from a South Indian city.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescents form about 20-30% of our population. Like the children of any other ages, adolescents have the so called usual problems and problems which are specific for their age and developmental peculiarities. The present study was undertaken to assess the prevalence of the psycho-social problems of adolescent girls and to counsel the girls with problems or those who were problem prone. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study in which 500 adolescent girls from 6 higher secondary schools were selected via a simple random sampling method. A psychiatrist was consulted before the

Finasteride for recurrent priapism in children and adolescents: a report on 5 cases.

PURPOSE: Recurrent priapism is prevalent in children. Different medications have been used to avoid new episodes, however, there is no consensus regarding the best option. The use of finasteride to treat priapism in adults has already been tested. The aim of the present study was to test the hypothesis that a low dose of finasteride would be effective in preventing recurrent priapism in children. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Since 2007, five children and adolescents with recurrent episodes of priapism have been treated with finasteride in our department, and the medical records of these patients we

Loss of speech after orthotopic liver transplantation.

Alteration of speech is a rare but distressing complication of orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT). We describe a characteristic speech disorder identified in a large series of consecutive patients undergoing OLT. Between 1988 and 1993, 525 adults underwent OLT. For all recipients with neurologic complications, we reviewed clinical findings, imaging and electrophysiologic test results, and perioperative laboratory data. Five patients (ages 23-52; UNOS status 3-4) exhibited a characteristic pattern of stuttering dysarthria, leading to complete loss of speech production, occasionally with ele

Normalization of Diffuse ST-Depression with aVR Elevation After Rehydration in a Patient with Severe Aortic Stenosis.

BACKGROUND Isolated ST elevation in lead aVR in combination with global ST depression with normalization after rehydration is a unique electrocardiographic pattern that is associated with a broad range of diagnoses. Its association with left main coronary artery disease and other acute coronary syndromes suggest the need for early and aggressive cardiac evaluation. CASE REPORT A 53-year-old man presented with altered mental status and loss of consciousness. He was unresponsive, hypotensive, tachycardiac, and diaphoretic. An initial ECG showed diffuse ST depression with isolated ST elevation in

Integrated Genetic Profiling for Cattle Parentage Testing via Next-Generation Sequencing.

Cattle are frequently involved in civil disputes and offenses. Currently, the paternity testing of cattle is mainly done by analysis of dinucleotide STR (di-STR) or SNPs. However, the di-STR marker usually produces many stutter artifacts that affect the accurate genotyping, and the polymorphic level of SNPs is not high enough. To overcome these limitations, we developed and validated a novel integrated next-generation sequencing (NGS) panel for cattle. It comprises 33 reported di-STRs and 30 newly identified tetranucleotide STRs (tetra-STRs), the mitochondrial displacement loop (D-loop) region

Usefulness of automated tractography for outcome prediction in patients with recurrent stroke.

[Purpose] To examine the usefulness of automated tractography for predicting outcomes in patients with recurrent stroke. [Participants and Methods] Diffusion tensor imaging was performed in the second week after stroke, and fractional anisotropy was calculated using automated tractography. Three patients with recurrent strokes were included in this study. [Results] Initial computed tomography findings of a 62-year-old man with stuttering speech revealed a hemorrhage in the left thalamus. Fractional anisotropy indicated slight neural damage in the association fibers of both hemispheres. The pat

The frontal aslant tract (FAT) and its role in speech, language and executive function.

In this review, we examine the structural connectivity of a recently-identified fiber pathway, the frontal aslant tract (FAT), and explore its function. We first review structural connectivity studies using tract-tracing methods in non-human primates, and diffusion-weighted imaging and electrostimulation in humans. These studies suggest a monosynaptic connection exists between the lateral inferior frontal gyrus and the pre-supplementary and supplementary motor areas of the medial superior frontal gyrus. This connection is termed the FAT. We then review research on the left FAT's putative role

Small intragenic deletion in FOXP2 associated with childhood apraxia of speech and dysarthria.

Relatively little is known about the neurobiological basis of speech disorders although genetic determinants are increasingly recognized. The first gene for primary speech disorder was FOXP2, identified in a large, informative family with verbal and oral dyspraxia. Subsequently, many de novo and familial cases with a severe speech disorder associated with FOXP2 mutations have been reported. These mutations include sequencing alterations, translocations, uniparental disomy, and genomic copy number variants. We studied eight probands with speech disorder and their families. Family members were p

A new neurological entity manifesting as involuntary movements and dysarthria with possible abnormal copper metabolism.

A few patients with an affected CNS involving abnormalities in copper metabolism have been described that do not fit any known nosological entities such as Wilson's disease or Menkes' disease. Three sporadic patients (two men and one woman) were examined with involuntary movements and dysarthria associated with abnormal concentrations of serum copper, serum ceruloplasmin, and urinary copper excretion. The onset of neurological symptoms occurred at the age of 15 to 17 years. The common clinical symptoms were involuntary movements and dysarthria. The involuntary movements included dystonia in th

An evaluation of short-term group therapy for people with aphasia.

This paper reports an evaluation of a group therapy intervention conducted with aphasic people (n = 6). The intervention comprised 10 sessions of approximately 90 min duration and included two participants with stuttering difficulties. The therapy programme consisted of communication activities within the group which encouraged sharing of personal experiences, videotaping of role-play activities for self- and group-evaluation and practice tasks completed outside the group. Measures of functional communicative ability, attitudes to communication and psychological adjustment were obtained before

Stammering and therapy views of people who stammer.

UNLABELLED: This study used a postal questionnaire to seek the views of adults who stammer concerning the effect of stammering on their lives, the speech and language therapy and other remedies they have tried, and their hopes for speech and language therapy in the future. The 332 returned questionnaires indicated that stammering had the greatest adverse effect on school life and occupation. Speech and language therapy had been helpful to many, but the nature of the benefits and specific therapies used were not cited in many responses. An emergent theme in unhelpful therapy was the dissatisfac

Decoding the Avian Missing Gene Mystery: Dot Chromosomes Unmask Extensive Gene Loss and Novel Genetic Instability.

The apparent absence of numerous conserved vertebrate genes from avian genomes has puzzled researchers for over a decade. In recent years, a subset of these genes has been identified; however, their sequences are unusually problematic, often evading detection by standard sequencing technologies. This limitation has hindered detailed investigation of the phenomenon-until recent progress in long read technologies, which are more robust against sequencing biases. This enabled us to classify real gene losses extensively, which strikingly revealed that a large number of the genes residing on so-cal
