Endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma (EMPSGC) is a rare low-grade sweat gland carcinoma with a strong predilection to the eyelid region. It is histologically analogous to endocrine ductal carcinoma/solid papillary carcinoma of the breast and is characterized by a multinodular solid cystic mucinous tumor with immunoreactivity to neuroendocrine markers. Only 20 cases of this unusual tumor have been reported. We present the clinical and histopathologic findings of 2 new cases of EMPSGC and review the relevant literature. The histological differential diagnosis is discussed and attentio…

Congenital chloride diarrhea (CLD) is an autosomal recessive disorder of intestinal electrolyte transportation caused by mutations in the an … red with that of CLD in colon. The only extraintestinal tissues showing CLD expression were eccrine sweat glands and seminal vesicles. In inflammatory bowel disease and ischemic colitis, expression of CLD mRNA in colon epithelium was similar to histologically normal colon epithelium, but the protein was found deeper in crypts, including proliferative ep …

Paraformaldehyde-fixed biopsy specimens of normal and chronic cutaneous leishmaniasis human skin were investigated for the presence and cellular distribution of interleukin-1 alpha, interleukin-1 beta, interleukin-6 and tumour necrosis factor-alpha and the corresponding receptors in eccrine sweat glands, using an indirect immunoperoxidase technique. There was cytoplasmic staining for all 4 cytokines as well as their receptor proteins in the clear cells of the eccrine sweat glands of both normal and inflamed skin specimens. No staining could be seen in the dark cells or the myoepithelial cells,…

As sweat is a biofluid that can be collected noninvasively, it has attracted attention as an alternative analytical target for conventional techniques that typically employ blood or urine. Among the components of sweat, amino acids are promising biomarker candidates as they can reflect physiological and metabolic states. Sweat amino-acid analysis using fluorescence derivatization with 4-fluoro-7-nitro-2,1,3-benzoxadiazole (NBD-F) and reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) has been reported previously. However, sensitive fluorescence detection of tryptophan is difficult us…

AIM: To evaluate whether a dual-zone wearable sweat biosensor patch could detect biochemical signatures of sacral pressure injury earlier than standard nursing assessment in postoperative patients requiring prolonged bed rest.
METHODS: This prospective, observational, single-arm study enrolled postoperative patients requiring prolonged bed rest with a Braden Scale score (a validated tool for pressure ulcer risk assessment) of 18 or lower. Two flexible biosensor patches were applied simultaneously to each participant: one at the sacral pressure zone (T1) and one at a reference site (T2), conti…

Sweat-gland carcinoma with neuroendocrine differentiation (SCAND) is a rare cutaneous adnexal carcinoma. Here we report a case of aggressive SCAND originating in the suprapubic area of an elderly male with lung and spinal cord metastasis. Sections from an excisional biopsy showed an infiltrative neoplasm filling the dermis with extension into the subcutaneous fat. Immunohistochemical studies showed expression of neuroendocrine markers, resulting in an initial diagnosis of metastatic neuroendocrine carcinoma. Next-generation sequencing identified a novel GATA3 frameshift extension mutation (p.F…

BackgroundThe diagnosis of cystic fibrosis (CF) is challenging due to high quantity not sufficient (QNS) rates of sweat tests, leading to frequent retesting, increasing costs and adverse impacts on patient care. This study aimed to assess sweat test performance and implement a quality improvement project (QIP) to reduce QNS rates.MethodsA two-part retrospective audit was conducted. Part one spanned 2 years reviewing the two-tiered testing with sweat conductivity as a screening tool, followed by chloride testing. Part two evaluated the QNS rates over two 6-month periods, separated by a QIP, whi…

Wearable human sweat sensors have offered a great prospect in epidermal detection for self-monitoring and health evaluation. These on-body epidermal sensors can be integrated with the Internet of Things (IoT) as augmented diagnostics tools for telehealth applications, especially for noninvasive health monitoring without using blood contents. One of many great benefits in utilizing sweat as biofluid is the capability of instantaneously continuous diagnosis during normal day-to-day activities. Here, we revealed a textile-based sweat sensor selective for perspired creatinine that is prepared by c…

The two main arms of the stress system include the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. These two neural stress systems coordinate the response of many other physiological systems to a stressor, including the immune and cardiovascular systems, bringing the body back to homeostasis. The nervous and immune systems communicate with each other in a bidirectional manner. In this review, we will discuss the use of noninvasive methods to evaluate the immune system, ANS and HPA axis. Collection of sweat and saliva, and measurement of heart rate variability …

The isolation of sweat glands from human skin has long been a challenging task. The human scalp contains thousands of eccrine glands, while the axilla harbors both eccrine and apocrine glands. Recently, the close anatomic relationship of the eccrine gland with the scalp hair follicle has been described. Taking advantage of this anatomic relationship, we describe here an efficient method to isolate sweat glands from the human scalp and the axilla using the micro-punch harvesting technique known as follicular unit excision (FUE), commonly employed in hair transplant surgery.Once the follicular u…

Hair analysis is a valuable tool in forensic toxicology to assess opioid exposure in both adult and pediatric populations. However, interpretation of analysis results is challenged by the scarcity of reliable reference data on opioids in hair and by the lack of knowledge on involved hair incorporation pathways, e.g., via skin-derived matrices such as sweat and sebum. In order to address these limitations, we conducted a clinical study in cooperation with the University Children's Hospital Zurich, where we obtained and analyzed hair and skin swab samples of 150 pediatric intensive-care patients…

Hyperhidrosis is characterized by excessive sweating, typically in the palmar and axillary regions. Individuals with severe cases of hyperhidrosis can be treated surgically via endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy to disrupt the neural connection between the spinal cord and the affected regions, thereby attenuating sweating in the hyperhidrotic regions. However, the effects of this procedure on skin blood flow and sweating responses to whole body heat stress in regions not targeted by the sympathectomy, such as the forearm, are unknown. We tested the hypothesis that surgical sympathectomy attenua…

Many cutaneous adnexal tumors share molecular alterations with other homologous neoplasms occurring in salivary glands. Polymorphous adenocarcinoma (PAC) is a rare salivary gland tumor, usually associated with alterations in the PRKD gene family. In this report, we describe a primary cutaneous sweat gland adenocarcinoma of the scalp occurring in a 65-year-old female. Morphological features of the carcinoma were reminiscent of salivary gland PAC. Tumor cells were CK7+ S100+ SOX10+ p63 focally positive and p40-. Whole-transcriptome sequencing of the lesion showed the presence of an in-frame ATL2…

Cytokine receptor like factor 1 (CRLF1) is the gene implicated, when mutated, in Crisponi syndrome/cold-induced sweating syndrome type 1 (CS/CISS1). Here, we report the establishment of induced pluripotent stem cell lines (iPSCs) from fibroblasts of a Turkish CS/CISS1 individual with a homozygous variant in CRLF1 (c.708_709delinsT; p.[Pro238Argfs*6]). This variant is the most frequent variant associated to CS/CISS1 in the Turkish population. These patient derived iPSC lines show all pluripotency markers, a normal karyotype and the ability to differentiate into the three germ layers.

Transient receptor potential vanilloid 4 (TRPV4) channels exist on vascular endothelial cells and eccrine sweat gland secretory cells in human skin. Here, we assessed whether TRPV4 channels contribute to cutaneous vasodilation and sweating during whole body passive heat stress (protocol 1) and to cutaneous vasodilation during postocclusive reactive hyperemia and local thermal hyperemia (protocol 2). Intradermal microdialysis was employed to locally deliver pharmacological agents to forearm skin sites, where cutaneous vascular conductance (CVC) and sweat rate were assessed. In protocol 1 (12 yo…
