Sleep stage transition and changes in autonomic function in newborn infants.

The relationships between sleep stage, startle response, electroencephalogram (EEG) pattern, and autonomic function in sleeping full-term infants was examined. Using autoregressive analysis of heart rate variability (HRV), 12 infants at a mean post-conception age of 41.1 weeks were studied. Based on HRV characteristics, the present study shows sympathetic nervous system activation during active sleep (AS) and distinct changes in autonomic function based on the startle response and EEG features during quiet sleep (QS). The findings might reflect structural and functional maturation of the centr…

The role of the autonomic nervous system in trigeminal neuralgia.

The role of the autonomic nervous system in trigeminal neuralgia is discussed. While the trigeminal nerve is accompanied by both sympathetic and parasympathetic fibers, first and second branch phenomena are predominantly associated with sympathetic stimuli. Third branch phenomena, by contrast, primarily involved a parasympathetic component. Atropine sulfate and beta-receptor blockers are suggested as a therapeutic modality. On ancillary studies involving 30 patients with trigeminal neuralgia an abnormal glucose tolerance and/or increased cholesterol level was found to be present in 28 cases.

The superior cervical ganglia modulate ventilatory responses to hypoxia independently of preganglionic drive from the cervical sympathetic chain.

Superior cervical ganglia (SCG) postganglionic neurons receive preganglionic drive via the cervical sympathetic chains (CSC). The SCG projects to structures like the carotid bodies (e.g., vasculature, chemosensitive glomus cells), upper airway (e.g., tongue, nasopharynx), and to the parenchyma and cerebral arteries throughout the brain. We previously reported that a hypoxic gas challenge elicited an array of ventilatory responses in sham-operated (SHAM) freely moving adult male C57BL6 mice and that responses were altered in mice with bilateral transection of the cervical sympathetic chain (CSC

Changes in Somatostatin-Like Immunoreactivity in the Sympathetic Neurons Projecting to the Prepyloric Area of the Porcine Stomach Induced by Selected Pathological Conditions.

The aim of the present study was to define changes in the expression of somatostatin (SOM) in the sympathetic perikarya innervating the porcine stomach prepyloric area during acetylsalicylic-acid-induced gastritis (ASA) and experimentally induced hyperacidity (HCL) and following partial stomach resection (RES). On day 1, the stomachs were injected with neuronal retrograde tracer Fast Blue (FB). Animals in the ASA group were given acetylsalicylic acid orally for 21 days. On the 22nd day after FB injection, partial stomach resection was performed in RES animals. On day 23, HCL animals were intra

Moderate to severe but not mild RLS is associated with greater sleep-related sympathetic autonomic activation than healthy adults without RLS.

INTRODUCTION: Restless legs syndrome (RLS) patients have been found to have high rates of transitory increases in the activity of the sympat … measures with a healthy population free of RLS. Thus, it is not known if during sleep the rates of sympathetic nervous system activation are greater for RLS than for a healthy population. The objectives of this study were to determine if: (1) RLS patients compared to healthy controls have a greater frequency of sympathetic nervous system activation (significant heart rate …

Anatomical study with clinical significance of communicating and visceral branching of the cervical and upper thoracic sympathetic trunk.

Current advances in the management of the autonomic nervous system in various cardiovascular diseases, and in treatments for pain or sympathetic disturbances in the head, neck, or upper limbs, necessitate a thorough understanding of the anatomy of the cervicothoracic sympathetic trunk. Our objective was to enhance our understanding of the origin and distribution of communicating branches and visceral cervicothoracic sympathetic nerves in human fetuses. This was achieved through a comprehensive topographic systematization of the branching patterns observed in the cervical and upper thoracic gan

[Autonomic nervous function of vertiginous patients--assessment by spectral analysis of heart rate variability].

Autonomic nervous function in 68 vertiginous patients and 33 controls was studied using power spectral analysis of heart rate variability. First, a system was developed which computes the power spectral density (PSD) of beat-to-beat heart intervals using a continuous non-invasive finger blood pressure recording obtained with the FINAPRESS device. A fast-Fourier transform algorithm was used to compute the PSD. In frequencies up to 0.5 Hz, the PSD of heart rate variability contains three major components: a low frequency (P1), a middle frequency (P2) and a high frequency (P3). Each component was

Activation of ChAT+ neuron in dorsal motor vagus (DMV) increases blood glucose through the regulation of hepatic gene expression in mice.

The brain and peripheral organs communicate through hormones and neural connections. Proper communication is required to maintain normal whole-body energy homeostasis. In addition to endocrine system, from the perspective of neural connections for metabolic homeostasis, the role of the sympathetic nervous system has been extensively studied, but understanding of the parasympathetic nervous system is limited. The liver plays a central role in glucose and lipid metabolism. This study aimed to clarify the innervation of parasympathetic nervous system in the liver and its functional roles in metab…

Cardiovascular tests of autonomic function and sympathetic skin responses in patients with major depression.

To assess the function of the autonomic nervous system in major depression, a series of cardiovascular tests, together with the recording of sympathetic skin response, were performed in 18 depressed patients (melancholic type, DSM-III-R criteria) and in 18 healthy control subjects. Depressed patients showed significantly poorer performance in Valsalva's, deep breathing, and lying to standing manoeuvres than controls, indicating an impairment of parasympathetic function. Depressed patients developed a significantly larger sympathetic skin response than controls during the lying to standing and

Effect of controlled hypoglycaemia on sympathetic skin response in patients with Type 1 diabetes and control subjects.

AIM: To evaluate the quantity and mechanism of sudomotor function during euglycaemia and hypoglycaemia using sympathetic skin responses in patients with Type 1 diabetes and control subjects. METHODS: Sympathetic skin responses were measured in 16 patients with diabetes without neuropathy and in eight control subjects during euglycaemic and hypoglycaemic clamp. RESULTS: During hypoglycaemia, the number of repetitive synchronous sympathetic skin responses significantly increased in both groups (P<0.05), and this increase was significantly associated with the hypoglycaemia and sweating. Autonomic impairment in borderline personality disorder: a laboratory investigation.

Recent research suggests that emotional dysfunction in psychiatric disorders can be reflected in autonomic abnormalities. The present study examines sympathetic and parasympathetic autonomic nervous system activity in individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) before, during, and following a social stressor task. Data were obtained from an analogue sample of participants screening positive for BPD (n=12) and healthy controls (n=28). In general, BPD participants exhibited increased sympathetic activity (indexed by Cardiac Sympathetic Index, CSI; Toichi et al., 1997) and decreased pa

Abolition of sympathetic skin responses following endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy.

The recording of sympathetic skin responses (SSRs) is a simple, electrophysiological method to assess sympathetic nerve function. Within the last 10 years, SSRs have mainly been applied to delineate peripheral and central nervous system diseases, although the sympathetic nature of these responses was not fully documented, e.g., by a study of sympathectomy. We therefore recorded SSRs before and after 30 cases of endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy. The main indication was palmar hyperhidrosis, in which we found two types of SSR abnormalities. Most patients exhibited normal SSR waveforms but with

Autonomic pain: features and methods of assessment.

The distribution of pain originating in the sympathetic nervous system does not match the somatic segmental sensory distribution at the postganglionic level. The two types of distribution are separate and different. At the preganglionic level, fibers show typical segmental sensory distribution, which resembles but is not identical to somatic segmental sensory distribution. Instead, sympathetic pain has its own distribution along the vascular supply and some peripheral nerves. It cannot be called atypical in terms of somatic segmental sensory distribution. Several techniques are available to as…

[Diabetes, obesity, hypertension and the autonomic nervous system].

Functional changes of the autonomic nervous system may represent a common pathophysiologic factor in the association between non insulin-dependent diabetes, obesity, and essential hypertension. In all these conditions a number of sympathetic and/or parasympathetic dysfunctions consistent with autonomic neuropathy or simply with functional adaptations to haemodynamic changes have been reported. Autonomic neuropathy is a well known diabetic complication which is responsible for some clinical aspects of different severity. Subtle sympathetic and parasympathetic abnormalities possibly affecting th
