Neural oscillatory characteristics of feedback-associated activity in globus pallidus interna.

Neural oscillatory activities in basal ganglia have prominent roles in cognitive processes. However, the characteristics of oscillatory activities during cognitive tasks have not been extensively explored in human Globus Pallidus internus (GPi). This study aimed to compare oscillatory characteristics of GPi between dystonia and Parkinson's Disease (PD). A dystonia and a PD patient performed the Intra-Extra-Dimension shift (IED) task during both on and off-medication states. During the IED task, patients had to correctly choose between two visual stimuli containing shapes or lines based on a hi

Practice Makes Transfer Imperfect: Evidence From Auditory Learning.

BACKGROUND: Evidence from motor and visual studies suggests that the ability to generalize learning gains to untrained conditions decreases as the training progresses. This decrease in generalization was suggested to reflect a shift from higher to lower levels of neuronal representations of the task following prolonged training. In the auditory modality, however, the few studies that tested the influence of prolonging training on generalization ability showed no decrease and sometimes even an increase in generalization. OBJECTIVE: To test the impact of extending training in a basic psychoacou

Left minineglect or inverse pseudoneglect in children with dyslexia?

This study compared the visuospatial asymmetries in children with dyslexia and healthy children by using the manual line bisection task, and investigated the processing of spatial context with a 'Локально' cueing paradigm consisting of geometric symbols placed on the extremities of the lines. The performance between healthy children (leftward bias) and children with dyslexia (rightward bias) was significantly different. Furthermore, the bisection mark was shifted in the direction of the unilaterally cued extremities in all children. As children with dyslexia showed a rightward bias in their spati

On call: alert or unsafe? A report of the AORN on-call electronic task force.

Research has linked health care providers' long work hours with patient care errors. Perioperative staff members often work extended hours because of long shifts and being on call. AORN's on-call electronic task force conducted a survey of nurses to determine their work load, call scheduling, and experiences related to fatigue. Of the 1,013 respondents, 67.7% said they had experienced effects of sleep deprivation. A follow-up survey revealed that few call programs are in compliance with AORN's recommended practices. Compliant call programs are detailed for adaptation in other perioperative set

Influences of Attentional Focus on Across- and Within-Sentence Variability in Adults Who Do and Do Not Stutter.

PURPOSE: Research has found an advantage to maintaining an external attentional focus while speaking as an increase in accuracy and a decrease in across-sentence variability has been found when producing oral-motor and speech tasks. What is not clear is how attention affects articulatory variability both across and within sentences, or how attention affects articulatory control in speakers who stutter. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of an internal versus external attention focus on articulatory variability at the sentence level. METHOD: This study used linear (spatia

Regulating effect of virtual reality restorative environment on prefrontal cortex dysfunction after night shifts in medical staff: an fNIRS study protocol for a randomized controlled trial in Dalian, China.

BACKGROUND: Night shift work-related disturbed biological rhythm and insufficient sleep affect the functioning of brain activity and thus impair cognitive performance and mood state, which potentially leads to negative and even devastating results for both individuals and patients. A virtual reality (VR)-based restorative environment has shown to be an effective new technique to reduce stress and improve cognitive performance, but little is known about its mechanism of improving neuronal activity and connectivity. METHODS: This is a randomized, controlled, single-center clinical trial. A tota

Adaptive integration of model-based and model-free strategies in human reinforcement learning of reachable space.

Most skilled behaviour occurs within reachable space; however, how humans learn to reach around obstacles in this space remains almost entirely unexplored. Here, using a novel robotic maze task that captures the richness of naturalistic hand-object interaction, we show that humans adaptively integrate model-based and model-free reinforcement learning strategies to act in reachable space. Fitting hybrid models to reach trajectories revealed that participants shifted from model-based toward model-free strategies across learning. Specifically, model-free reliance increased with state familiarity

Functional recruitment and connectivity of the cerebellum is associated with the emergence of Theory of Mind in early childhood.

There is accumulating evidence that the human cerebellum is heavily implicated in adult social cognition. Yet, its involvement in the development of Theory of Mind (ToM), a hallmark of social cognition, remains elusive. Using openly available functional MRI data of children with emerging ToM abilities (N = 41, age range: 3-12 years) and adults (N = 78), we show that children who pass a false-belief assessment of ToM abilities activate cerebellar Crus I-II in response to ToM events during a movie-watching task, similar to adults. This activation is not statistically significant in children who

Human DC scalp potentials during vestibular and optokinetic stimulation: non-specific responses?

In normal subjects transient horizontal body rotation in the dark (vestibular stimulation) elicited a DC potential change with the maximum at Cz. The response appeared to covary with stimulus velocity, which is the most relevant stimulus parameter transferred by the horizontal semicircular canal system. A similar response was obtained during optokinetic stimulation. However, the following findings suggested that the responses are related to 'high' perceptual functions rather than representing a visuo-vestibular evoked cortical potential: (a) the visual response was found independent of whether

Influence of team task outcomes on individuals' responses to their own errors.

In team sports, the consequences of an individual's action are often decoupled from the team task outcome because teammates can compensate for individual errors. Here, we asked whether in such cooperative contexts, an individual's learning response to their own error is modulated by team outcome, even when their actions do not directly determine that outcome. We developed a joystick-based cooperative motor task that mimics a final pass and shot in soccer, performed by pairs of human participants (passer and shooter). In error-clamp trials, where the movements of both players did not influence

A Comparative Study of Prism Adaptation Using Virtual Reality and Conventional Prism Glasses.

BACKGROUND: Unilateral spatial neglect (USN) is a symptom of cerebrovascular disorders characterized by impaired attention to the space opposite a cerebral hemisphere lesion. Prism adaptation (PA) is a rehabilitation technique considered effective for treating USN. PA involves performing tasks while wearing prism glasses, which shift the visual field and help correct spatial perception. However, methods tailored to the severity of USN have not been fully established. Virtual reality (VR) has been proposed as a potential solution. This study aimed to compare the effects of a VR-based PA system

A robot-based interception task to quantify upper limb impairments in proprioceptive and visual feedback after stroke.

BACKGROUND: A key motor skill is the ability to rapidly interact with our dynamic environment. Humans can generate goal-directed motor actions in response to sensory stimulus within ~ 60-200ms. This ability can be impaired after stroke, but most clinical tools lack any measures of rapid feedback processing. Reaching tasks have been used as a framework to quantify impairments in generating motor corrections for individuals with stroke. However, reaching may be inadequate as an assessment tool as repeated reaching can be fatiguing for individuals with stroke. Further, reaching requires many tria

A matter of hand: Causal links between hand dominance, structural organization of fronto-parietal attention networks, and variability in behavioural responses to transcranial magnetic stimulation.

Considerable evidence suggests that, on a group level, human visuospatial attention is asymmetrically organized, with a right-hemispheric dominance. The asymmetrical organization of the superior longitudinal fasciculus (SLF) has been shown to account for the right-hemispheric dominance in visual attention. However, such account is by no means universal, and large individual differences in asymmetrical performance on visuospatial tasks have been reported. Furthermore, the variability in the SLF lateralization has been shown to correlate with behavioural asymmetries. Continuous theta burst stimu

Evolving and contested vocabulary of abortion and miscarriage: inconsistencies across English, Italian, French and German.

The language used to describe the ending of a pregnancy is contested, and the contest has consequences for stigma, recognition and access to care. In English, the late twentieth-century shift from 'spontaneous abortion' to 'miscarriage' is often told as growing compassion. Comparing English with Italian, French and German, I argue that the shift is better understood as the relocation of stigma rather than its removal. English, having no separate everyday word for miscarriage, engineered a shift through deliberate professional reform. French and German did so centuries ago. Italian never develo

Landmark Recognition Beyond Curated Benchmarks: Cross-Domain Evaluation of a Multi-Threshold Selective YOLO11 Ensemble on User-Generated Imagery, with a Zero-Shot Multimodal LLM Baseline.

Landmark recognition for smart tourism is usually validated on curated benchmark images. In deployment, however, the classifier must handle user-generated photographs whose viewpoint, lighting, resolution, occlusion, and compression differ sharply from curated data. This paper evaluates a previously published multi-threshold enhancement and selective YOLO11n-cls ensemble under this shift, and provides a preliminary zero-shot comparison of three general-purpose multimodal large language models (MLLMs) on the same task. To measure the shift, we build Samarkand v2-SNS, a 300-image out-of-distribu

Spatial distribution of erector spinae activity is related to task-specific pain-related fear during a repetitive object lifting task.

Fear-avoidance beliefs, particularly the fear of lifting with a flexed spine, are associated with reduced spinal motion during object lifting. Low back pain patients thereby also showed potentially clinically relevant changes in the spatial distribution of back muscle activity, but it remains unknown whether such associations are also present in pain-free individuals. This cross-sectional observational study investigated the relationship between fear-avoidance beliefs and the spatial distribution of lumbar paraspinal muscle activity in pain-free individuals during a repetitive lifting task. Exposure to noise and ototoxic chemicals in the Australian workforce.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the current prevalence of exposure to workplace noise and ototoxic chemicals, including co-exposures. METHOD: A cross-sectional telephone survey of nearly 5000 Australian workers was conducted using the web-based application, OccIDEAS. Participants were asked about workplace tasks they performed and predefined algorithms automatically assessed worker's likelihood of exposure to 10 known ototoxic chemicals as well as estimated their full shift noise exposure level (LAeq,8h) of their most recent working day. Results were extrapolated to represent the Australian working p

Nosce te ipsum--Socrates revisited? Controlling momentary ruminative self-referent thoughts by neuromodulation of emotional working memory.

It becomes ever more evident that cognitive operations serve as fundamental mechanisms underlying higher order ruminative thoughts. In this sham controlled within subjects study, we performed anodal transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) over the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) in 32 healthy participants. We tested the causal hypothesis that the relationship between DLPFC activity and ruminative thinking is mediated by working memory operations. We used the Internal Shift Task, a paradigm in which participants have to update and shift between specific (non)emotional represe

Alterations in behavioral flexibility by cannabinoid CB1 receptor agonists and antagonists.

RATIONALE: Cannabinoid CB1 receptors are expressed in the prefrontal cortex, but their role in mediating executive functions such as behavioral flexibility is unclear. OBJECTIVE: The present study examined the effect of pharmacological activation or blockade of the cannabinoid CB1 receptors on behavioral flexibility using a strategy set-shifting task conducted on a cross maze. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In experiment 1, rats initially were trained to turn left or right while ignoring the visual cue to obtain a food; on the second test day, rats had to inhibit the previously learned rule and appr

Attention allocation in social anxiety during a speech.

Cognitive models assume that social anxiety is associated with and maintained by biased information processing, leading to change in attention allocation, which can be measured by examining eye movement. However, little is known about the distribution of attention among positive, neutral and negative stimuli during a social task and the relative importance of positive versus negative biases in social anxiety. In this study, eye movement, subjective state anxiety and psychophysiology of individuals with high trait social anxiety (HSA) and low trait social anxiety (LSA) were measured during a sp
