Dopamine receptor stimulation in the treatment of depression: piribedil (ET-495).

ET-495, a putative central dopamine receptor stimulant, was givem to endogenously depressed individuals, all of whom were largely unresponsive to previous drug treatment. The drug exhibited a rapid and, in some cases, a pronounced antidepressant effect. This effect was short-lived, however, and, within a brief period, depression returned accompanied by a consistent syndrome of anger, irritability, hostility and poor temper control. In one individual with a bipolar history, the induction of a paranoid psychosis and auditory hallucinosis occurred. While the data suggests a role for dopamine in t

Sunlight and hypercalciuria.

Urinary calcium and magnesium excretion was measured in two groups of soldiers leaving the temperate climate of the united Kingdom for service in the Persian Gulf. In one group urinary calcium levels and magnesium/calcium ratios were similar, ten days after arrival in the Gulf during the "cold season", to those found in the U.K. The other group went to the Gulf in the "hot season", and calcium excretion rose immediately to levels comparable with those found in the first group after eight months. Mg/Ca ratios fell to levels seen in stonformers, and 2 of 91 soldiers followed up for three years h

Slow viral infections of the nervous system and genetic disease.

Slow viral infections are characterized by a long incubation period, protracted clinical course, and limited host range. Scrapie of sheep and kuru and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease of man are slow infections which have been regarded at one time or another as being of genetic etiology. The initial assumption that these represented hereodofamilial degenerative diseases came from their occurrence in families or in population aggregates, their chronic afebrile clinical courses and their histopathologic changes of noninflammatory degeneration. The role of genetics in these diseases is uncertain althoug

Promote or prevent? A regulatory focus perspective on managerial risk taking.

This study examines the heterogeneity of CEOs' risk attitudes and how fixed versus variable compensation components shape their strategic risk-taking, as part of corporate governance policy. Building on psychological Regulatory Focus Theory (RFT) and established management frameworks, we developed a conceptual model with six hypotheses. We applied a validated Polish Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC) dictionary to measure CEOs' promotion and prevention focus through content analysis of their shareholder letters. Our dataset covers 82 companies listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange (WSE) fr

A Radiocarbon-Based Framework to Assess Soil Organic Carbon Persistence and Vulnerability Across Land-Use Types.

Soil organic carbon (SOC) can persist from days to millennia but remains vulnerable to carbon (C) loss upon disturbances, depending on environmental conditions and mode of stabilization. Understanding drivers of persistence and vulnerability is crucial to assess soil C sequestration as well as potential SOC losses due to changes in climate and land use. Here, we investigate SOC persistence and vulnerability in five land-use types by combining radiocarbon-derived estimates of SOC age (system age) and age of respired CO2 (transit time) with indicators of biological (SOC decomposability) and ther

Predicting the global risk of chikungunya virus under climate change using ensemble species distribution models.

INTRODUCTION: Climate change is expanding vector-borne disease ranges, yet Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) risk projections remain limited by single-model uncertainty and lack of vector integration. CHIKV, transmitted by Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus, threatens 1.3 billion people globally, necessitating robust spatiotemporal risk assessment. METHODS: Using hierarchical ensemble modeling in Biomod2, we first projected vector distributions based on 19 bioclimatic variables and elevation, then integrated vector suitability as biological predictors for CHIKV under 16 CMIP6 scenarios (4 SSPs × 4 GCMs,

Suboptimal Neural Drive for Muscle Output During Exertional Hyperthermia: A Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) Study.

PURPOSE: Exertional hyperthermia impairs endurance performance. Although the central nervous system mediates premature fatigue, limited understanding of when and how neural perturbations arise during exertional hyperthermia hinders efforts to develop effective strategies to mitigate its impacts. METHODS: Fifteen physically active males completed a familiarization trial and three randomized crossover controlled trials involving treadmill walking at 54 ± 4% maximal oxygen consumption (mean ± SD) in a temperate environment (COOL; dry bulb temperature [Tdb]: 22.3 ± 0.4°C, relative humidity [RH]:

Characteristics of Pyomyositis at a Pediatric Hospital in Osaka, Japan.

Introduction Pyomyositis, also known as tropical pyomyositis, has traditionally been considered more prevalent in tropical regions. The number of pediatric pyomyositis cases has been increasing in several temperate countries. In this study, we examined the characteristics of pyomyositis in a single pediatric hospital in Japan, a temperate country. Methods We analyzed 108 patients diagnosed with pyogenic arthritis, pyogenic osteomyelitis, and pyomyositis who were followed up at our hospital over a 32-year period. Data were collected on sex, age of onset, affected site, causative organism, and y

Environmental factors and mobility predict COVID-19 seasonality in the Netherlands.

BACKGROUND: We recently showed that seasonal patterns of COVID-19 incidence and Influenza-Like Illnesses incidence are highly similar, in a country in the temperate climate zone, such as the Netherlands. We hypothesize that in The Netherlands the same environmental factors and mobility trends that are associated with the seasonality of flu-like illnesses are predictors of COVID-19 seasonality as well. METHODS: We used meteorological, pollen/hay fever and mobility data from the Netherlands. For the reproduction number of COVID-19 (Rt), we used daily estimates from the Dutch State Institute for

A comparison of heat acclimation by post-exercise hot water immersion and exercise in the heat.

OBJECTIVES: To compare heat acclimation adaptations after three and six days of either post-exercise hot water immersion (HWI) or exercise-heat-acclimation (EHA) in recreationally active individuals. DESIGN: Randomised, mixed model, repeated measures. METHODS: Post-exercise HWI involved a daily 40-min treadmill-run at 65% V̇O2peak in temperate conditions (19 °C, 45% RH) followed by HWI (≤40 min, 40 °C water; n = 9). Daily EHA involved a ≤60-min treadmill-run in the heat (65% V̇O2peak; 33 °C, 40% RH; n = 9), chosen to elicit a similar endogenous thermal stimulus to HWI. A thermoneutral exerci

Analyses of the Distribution Patterns of Burkholderia pseudomallei and Associated Phages in Soil Samples in Thailand Suggest That Phage Presence Reduces the Frequency of Bacterial Isolation.

BACKGROUND: Burkholderia pseudomallei is a soil saprophytic bacterium that causes melioidosis. The infection occurs through cutaneous inoculation, inhalation or ingestion. Bacteriophages (phages) in the same ecosystem may significantly impact the biology of this bacterium in the environment, and in their culturability in the laboratory. METHODS/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: The soil samples were analysed for the presence of bacteria using culture methods, and for phages using plaque assays on B. pseudomallei strain 1106a lawns. Of the 86 soil samples collected from northeastern Thailand, B. pseudomalle

Isolation, characterization and comparative genomics of bacteriophage SfIV: a novel serotype converting phage from Shigella flexneri.

BACKGROUND: Shigella flexneri is the major cause of shigellosis in the developing countries. The O-antigen component of the lipopolysaccharide is one of the key virulence determinants required for the pathogenesis of S. flexneri. The glucosyltransferase and/or acetyltransferase genes responsible for the modification of the O-antigen are encoded by temperate serotype converting bacteriophage present in the S. flexneri genome. Several serotype converting phages have previously been isolated and characterized, however, attempts to isolate a serotype converting phage which encodes the modification

Occupational health risks due to shipboard cockroaches.

OBJECTIVES: In various investigated populations, sensitization to cockroaches was observed in 8% of screened subjects from temperate climatic zones and in 36% of those from tropical zones. Because of the numerous hiding places and food storages aboard a ship the crews can be highly exposed to cockroaches. The aim of this study is to assess the prevalence of sensitization to cockroaches and potentially associated health risks in seafarers. METHODS: In July 2005, a total of 145 seamen sailing under the German flag were recruited from a medical surveillance program for a cross-sectional study (r

Acquired torticollis due to primary pyomyositis of the paraspinal muscles in an 11-year-old boy.

Torticollis is characterised by tilting and rotation of the cervical spine in opposite directions. Causes can be congenital or acquired. Primary pyomyositis is a rare subacute deep bacterial infection of skeletal muscles that typically affects individuals under 20 years of age from tropical countries. Infrequently, pyomyositis occurs in individuals from temperate regions, usually in immunocompromised adults, and this is defined as secondary pyomyositis. We report a case of acquired torticollis due to primary pyomyositis of the paraspinal muscles in a previously healthy boy from the UK. A prolo

Coordinating innate and adaptive immunity in Fasciola hepatica infection: implications for control.

The helminth parasite Fasciola hepatica is responsible for major economic losses in agriculture throughout temperate regions of the globe. Control measures are heavily reliant on chemotherapy resulting in the emergence of drug resistant parasite populations. Novel control strategies based on vaccination ultimately require a deeper knowledge of host-parasite interactions. Herein we discuss recent advances in the understanding of the immune response to F. hepatica placing them in context with previous knowledge and developments from other model systems. Advances in RNAi and proteomics in the con

Toxic effects of mycotoxins in humans.

Mycotoxicoses are diseases caused by mycotoxins, i.e. secondary metabolites of moulds. Although they occur more frequently in areas with a hot and humid climate, favourable for the growth of moulds, they can also be found in temperate zones. Exposure to mycotoxins is mostly by ingestion, but also occurs by the dermal and inhalation routes. Mycotoxicoses often remain unrecognized by medical professionals, except when large numbers of people are involved. The present article reviews outbreaks of mycotoxicoses where the mycotoxic etiology of the disease is supported by mycotoxin analysis or ident

Biochemical features of grain legume allergens in humans and animals.

Peanuts and soybeans are the major legumes involved in human food allergy, although some data exist on adverse reactions to temperate legumes including pea, green bean, sweet lupin, and lentil. An increasing number of legume proteins or glycoproteins have been characterized as food allergens. Limited data tend to indicate that they are usually different from legume inhalent allergens. Cross-recognition among legume allergens is immunochemically frequent but clinically less common. A common feature to most legume allergens is their natural resistance to thermal, chemical, and in some way, prote

Infectious agents associated with myopathies.

Several infectious agents can cause chronic or acute myopathy. Most current investigations into possible infectious causes of the idiopathic inflammatory myopathies have focused on retroviruses, including HIV and human T-cell leukemia-lymphoma virus type I. In both cases, viruses likely do not directly infect muscle fibers but instead induce an immunologically mediated myositis. Other interest has focused on enteroviruses as potential etiologic agents of idiopathic inflammatory myopathy, but their relationship to human myositis is less clear. In addition to chronic muscle disease, several infe

Tropical pyomyositis. Demonstration of extent and distribution of disease by gallium scintigraphy.

Pyomyositis is a Staphylococcus aureus infection of muscles reported primarily in tropical countries but seen with increasing frequency in temperate climates. Because of its rarity in the United States, the diagnosis may not be considered immediately, and involved muscles may break down and become abscessed. Diagnosis is most reliably made by the recovery of pus from a muscle aspirate. Ga-67 scan findings of an interesting case of pyomyositis involving many muscle groups in both upper and lower extremities is reported. Despite arthralgias and complicating adult respiratory distress syndrome, G

Transduodenal sphincteroplasty and transampullary septotomy for primary sphincter of Oddi dysfunction.

We examined 29 patients without stone disease or pancreatic ductal ectasia who underwent transduodenal sphincteroplasty and transampullary septotomy for symptoms of biliary colic or pancreatitis. The combination of biliary symptoms and a fibrotic ampulla of Vater portends a favorable surgical outcome in virtually all such patients. Patients with pancreatitis did worse overall, perhaps due to the existence of unappreciated subclinical parenchymal disease not related to sphincter dysfunction. Although endoscopic retrograde cholangiography was sensitive in demonstrating abnormalities of the pancr
