Effectiveness of virtual reality in reducing anxiety, fear, and pain in children undergoing skin prick testing: A crossover study.

BACKGROUND: Skin prick testing (SPT) is a cornerstone diagnostic procedure for identifying allergic sensitizations in children. Despite being minimally invasive, it often provokes considerable anxiety, fear, and pain, potentially compromising test accuracy due to poor compliance. Virtual reality (VR) has emerged as a promising non-pharmacological tool for procedural distress management, yet its application in allergy diagnostics remains underexplored. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of VR in reducing procedural anxiety, fear, and pain, and improving compliance in children undergoing

Sensorineural Hearing Loss Negatively Impacts Cognition in Older Subjects with Normal Lateral Semi-Circular Canal Function.

INTRODUCTION: Worldwide around 400 million people suffer from hearing loss. There is increasing evidence that hearing loss is a modifiable risk factor for cognitive decline. However, several risk factors for cognition are common in hearing-impaired individuals, including vestibular dysfunction, anxiety, and depression. This study aimed to explore the effect of hearing loss on cognitive functioning in older adults, considering the effects of vestibular function, anxiety, and depression on cognitive performance. METHOD: A cross-sectional study was performed on 42 subjects with moderate-to-sever

Characteristics of cardio-Cerebrovascular modulation in patients with generalized anxiety disorder: an observational study.

BACKGROUND: Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) has been shown in previous studies to display abnormal cerebral blood flow velocity (CBFV); however, the characteristics of cardio-cerebrovascular modulation are unknown. We aimed to analyze cardio-cerebrovascular modulation using parameters from a supine-to-standing test. METHODS: There are 2 parts to this study; in Part 1, 125 participants with Hamilton Anxiety scale scores ≥14 were enrolled, and 33 age- and sex-matched medically and psychiatrically healthy volunteers were recruited as control participants. Patients were divided by score into m

Smoking-related prospective memory deficits in a real-world task.

BACKGROUND: Smokers, previous smokers and a never smoked group were compared on self-reported and real world prospective memory (PM - the cognitive ability of remembering to carry out particular actions at some future point in time). METHODS: Twenty-seven current smokers, 24 people who had never smoked and 18 previous smokers were compared using an existing groups design. Scores on the long and short term PM subscales of the Prospective and Retrospective Memory Questionnaire (PRMQ) and scores on a Real World Prospective Memory Task (RWPMT) constituted the dependent measures. Smoking and other

Seizures in the elderly: impact on mental status, mood, and sleep.

Comorbidities of epilepsy have not been well explored in the elderly. Herein, we examined mental status, mood, and sleep in elderly patients with epilepsy, compared with age- and gender-matched community controls without epilepsy from the Einstein Aging Study. Testing included a mental status test, the Blessed Information Memory and Concentration (BIMC) test; Prime-MD Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ) Depression and Anxiety Modules; and Medical Outcomes Study Sleep Scale. Persons with epilepsy (n=31) had higher mean BIMC scores than controls (n=31, BIMC 6.3 vs.1.2, P<0.0001). Mean PHQ Depress

The Bi-factor model of repetitive negative thinking: Common vs. unique factors as predictors of depression and anxiety.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Different forms of repetitive negative thinking (RNT) have traditionally been conceptualized as being distinctly linked to specific disorders. However, emerging evidence suggests that a common process lies at the core of different RNT manifestations. This common process might also largely explain the link between RNT and psychopathology. To examine the latent factor structure of RNT, we compared three structural-equation models, assuming (a) a common factor across different RNT measures (single-factor model); (b) scale-specific factors for each RNT measures (separate

The Use of Virtual Therapy in Cardiac Rehabilitation of Female Patients with Heart Disease.

Background and Objectives: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) has become increasingly prevalent in women, and it is also in this group that the risk of developing depression is the highest. The most commonly applied therapeutic intervention in cardiac rehabilitation is Schultz's autogenic training, which has proven to be of little efficacy in reducing depression and anxiety disorders. At the same time, a growing number of scientific reports have been looking at the use of virtual reality (VR) to treat mental health problems. This study aimed at assessing the efficacy of virtual therapy in reducing l

Internet use by the socially fearful: addiction or therapy?

The Internet has often been argued to have adverse psychological consequences, such as depression or anxiety symptoms, among "over-users." The present study offers an alternative understanding, suggesting the Internet may be used as a forum for expanding social networks and consequently enhancing the chance of meaningful relationships, self-confidence, social abilities, and social support. An online sample of 188 people was recruited over the Internet, while paper and pencil tests were administered to an offline sample group of 27 undergraduate university students, who were regular Internet us

Maternal mood and anxiety effects on the fetal nonstress test.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have suggested that acute mood states may influence levels of fetal activity. Because the fetal nonstress test relies on markers of fetal activity to suggest fetal wellbeing, its interpretation may be affected by maternal mood. OBJECTIVE: This study sought to determine if there are differences in nonstress test characteristics between pregnant individuals with and without symptoms of mood disorder. STUDY DESIGN: In this prospective cohort study, we recruited pregnant individuals undergoing nonstress test in the third trimester and compared the results of the nons
