First molecular detection of Rickettsia africae in ticks from the Union of the Comoros.

BACKGROUND: Rickettsia africae is the agent of African tick bite fever, a disease transmitted by ticks in sub-Saharan Africa. In Union of the Comoros, a recent study reported the presence of a Rickettsia africae vector but no information has been provided on the circulation of the pathogenic agent in this country. METHODS: To evaluate the possible circulation of Rickettsia spp. in Comorian cattle, genomic DNA was extracted from 512 ticks collected either in the Union of the Comoros or from animals imported from Tanzania and subsequently tested for Rickettsia infection by quantitative PCR. Ecological studies on the brown dog tick Rhipicephalus sanguineus (Acari: Ixodidae) in southern Israel and its relationship to spotted fever group rickettsiae.

An outbreak of spotted fever group rickettsiae (SFGR) was investigated by studying free-living and parasitic stages of ticks in two settlements of equal size and population located 20 km apart in the Negev Desert. Although high morbidity from SFGR was found in one of the settlements (Kibbutz Ze'elim), no clinical cases were observed in the second (Kibbutz Re'im). Using flagging and CO2-trapping, approximately 9 times more ticks were collected in Ze'elim than in Re'im. Rhipicephalus sanguineus (Latreille) was the dominant species in Ze'elim, whereas in Re'im R. turanicus Pomerantzev was the mos

Detection and genotypes of piroplasms affecting ruminants in the New Valley Governorate, Egypt.

BACKGROUND: Piroplasms, which include the two genera Babesia and Theileria, are protozoan parasites transmitted by Ixodid ticks that infect the erythrocytes of vertebrate hosts, including humans, domestic animals, and wild animals. The present study examined how common and distinct genotypes of the above tick-borne parasites are in the New Valley Governorate in Egypt, which covers 440,098 km². MATERIALS AND METHODS: It was conducted on 321 randomly selected live animals (89 cattle, 55 goats, and 177 sheep), regardless of sex and age. Of these, 203 were found to be infested with ticks, and 269

Where have all the grouse ticks gone? Apparent decline in collections of Haemaphysalis chordeilis Packard.

Haemaphysalis chordeilis Packard, also known as the grouse or bird tick, is a three-host tick native to North America. Literature from the early 20th century reported a widespread distribution of this tick across the US and Canada. As its name implies, ground-dwelling birds such as grouse and quail were frequent hosts, and occasionally large infestations were reported in domestic flocks making it a pest of economic importance. However, after the mid-1900's records of this species appear scarce, and a number of more recent studies of ticks on birds (including ostensibly favored host species) di

Molecular Ecological Insights into Neotropical Bird-Tick Interactions.

In the tropics, ticks parasitize many classes of vertebrate hosts. However, because many tropical tick species are only identifiable in the adult stage, and these adults usually parasitize mammals, most attention on the ecology of tick-host interactions has focused on mammalian hosts. In contrast, immature Neotropical ticks are often found on wild birds, yet difficulties in identifying immatures hinder studies of birds' role in tropical tick ecology and tick-borne disease transmission. In Panama, we found immature ticks on 227 out of 3,498 individually-sampled birds representing 93 host specie

Vaccines against arthropods.

The possibility of vaccinating hosts against blood-feeding arthropods using antigens derived from salivary gland, gut, and other tissues is reviewed. These vaccines directed against vector arthropods also have the potential to effect the arthropods capacity to transmit pathogens, and this is distinct from transmission-blocking vaccines that use antigens derived from pathogens. Antigen extracts have been used in attempts to vaccinate against fleas, lice, keds, flies, mosquitoes, and a number of tick species. A vaccine against the cattle tick, Boophilus microplus (Canestrini), using a recombinan

Determination of resistance status to amitraz in the cattle tick Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus from Luzon, Philippines, through bioassay and molecular analysis.

Tick infestations and tick-borne diseases are among the leading causes of economic losses in the cattle industry worldwide. Amitraz is one of the most commonly used chemical acaricides against the cattle tick Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus. Resistance to amitraz has been reported in many countries but not in the Philippines. This study aimed to determine whether cattle ticks from provinces in northern and southern Luzon, Philippines, are resistant to amitraz. Engorged or nearly engorged female ticks were collected from 21 farms and allowed to lay eggs to produce larvae. Larval packet test…

Diagnosis of Hepatozoon spp. in Amblyomma ovale and its experimental transmission in domestic dogs in Brazil.

Transmission of Hepatozoon spp. to dogs was investigated using four species of ixodid ticks: Rhipicephalus sanguineus, Amblyomma aureolatum, Amblyomma ovale and Amblyomma cajennense. We collected completely or partially engorged adult ticks of these species from dogs that were naturally infested and positive for Hepatozoon spp. We selected some of these ixodids and inoculated them orally in four negative dogs. The other ticks were dissected and examined for oocysts. Of all dogs inoculated orally with R. sanguineus, A. aureolatum, A. cajennense and A. ovale, only the animal that received the ma

Comparative microarray analyses of adult female midgut tissues from feeding Rhipicephalus species.

The cattle tick, Rhipicephalus microplus, has a debilitating effect on the livestock industry worldwide, owing to its being a vector of the causative agents of bovine babesiosis and anaplasmosis. In South Africa, co-infestation with R. microplus and R. decoloratus, a common vector species on local livestock, occurs widely in the northern and eastern parts of the country. An alternative to chemical control methods is sought in the form of a tick vaccine to control these tick species. However, sequence information and transcriptional data for R. decoloratus is currently lacking. Therefore, this

Oral delivery of the systemic acaricide moxidectin to a confined Odocoileus virginianus (Artiodactyla: Cervidae) herd parasitized by Ixodes scapularis (Ixodida: Ixodidae).

This study evaluated efficacy of oral delivery of the systemic acaricide moxidectin to a confined, wild, white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus Zimmermann; WTD) herd in late fall, when adult blacklegged ticks (Ixodes scapularis Say) are known to actively seek hosts in the northeastern United States. Moxidectin-treated corn was dispensed using timed-release feeders at a fenced study site in Connecticut during fall 2021 and 2022. White-tailed deer were captured and sampled four times each year to measure moxidectin levels in sera and assess adult I. scapularis burdens. Results documented that

Multi-epitope tick vaccines: From computational design to field deployment, immunoinformatics approaches, validation challenges, and translational pathways.

Ticks are major vectors of pathogens affecting both humans and animals, yet effective and sustainable control strategies remain limited. Conventional vaccines based on the concealed antigen Bm86 provide only partial protection and are often constrained by antigenic variability and strain-specific responses. Recent advances in immunoinformatics have enabled the rational design of multi-epitope vaccines (MEVs), which integrate selected B-cell and T-cell epitopes derived from functionally relevant tick proteins involved in physiology and reproduction. This review synthesizes current approaches to

Essential oils as an alternative control against cattle ticks in México: an integrative review.

The control of cattle ticks (Rhipicephalus microplus) is critical in livestock farming, especially in pasture-based systems, as these ectoparasites are vectors of diseases such as bovine babesiosis and anaplasmosis. However, chemical pesticides have led to the development of resistance in tick populations, as well as in the elimination of beneficial soil fauna and the animal itself, making essential the development of alternative control methods. Essential oils (EOs), derived from plants, have emerged as a promising alternative due to their natural acaricidal and repellent properties. EOs rich
