BACKGROUND/AIMS: Traumatic dental injuries (TDIs) can result in complications that may manifest long after the initial injury. Long-term follow-up is essential. Registration systems must be easy to use. This study aimed to describe and validate a simple registration system for clinician-important TDI outcomes as an index.
MATERIALS/METHODS: The clinical and radiological outcome findings were formulated with five digits in line with the Eden Baysal Dental Trauma Index. Twenty-five experts (n = 15 in a primary expert panel and n = 10 in a feedback panel) from seventeen countries participated in

The mandibular interforaminal region has been considered safe for surgical procedures; nevertheless, the risk of injury to neurovascular structures, such as the mental foramen (MF) and its related structures (anterior loop [AL] and lingual foramina [LF]) should not be overlooked. The study aimed to evaluate the relative risk of injury to these structures during surgical procedures in the anterior region of the mandible based on cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans. A retrospective cross-sectional and observational study was performed on 250 CBCTs from adults (18-69 years) with dentate ja

OBJECTIVE: To assess the impact of various local pathologies on facial alveolar bone dimensions at tooth sites.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cone-beam computed tomography images of 60 patients were analyzed. Healthy teeth and teeth with local pathologies (i.e., endodontically treated, periodontally diseased teeth, and teeth with periapical lesions) were included. The thickness of the facial alveolar bone was measured at five locations: (1) the bone crest (W0), (2) 25% (W25), (3) 50% (W50), (4) 75% (W75) of the distance from the bone crest to the root apex (A), and (5) in the A region (W100). BACKGROUND: The authors conducted a study to analyze the stress concentration areas in a tooth restored with a post-retained crown under various conditions.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The authors constructed a three-dimensional finite element model describing a maxillary second premolar restored with an all-ceramic crown supported by a titanium post and a resin-based composite core. They applied static vertical and horizontal loads of 100 newton to the cusp tip of the crown and recorded Von Mises and tensile stress values. The variables investigated were the presence of the post, coronal and apic

The distinguishing histopathologic features of focal cemento-osseous dysplasia (FCOD) (including lesions occurring in both anterior and posterior jaws) and cemento-ossifying fibroma (COF) (ossifying fibroma and cementifying fibroma) were demonstrated in our earlier work. The aim of the current study was to further refine their clinical and radiographic features. We have assessed 18 clinical and radiographic parameters by univariate comparisons (chi-squared and Student t tests), and a multivariate assessment (logistic regression) in 241 cases of FCOD and 75 of COF. These cases were diagnosed fr

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to evaluate the enamel matrix derivative (EMD) biomaterial in nonvital immature teeth.
METHODS: To arrest root development, pulpectomies were performed in the lower first molars of 36 4-week-old rats; the cavities were left exposed to the oral environment for 3 weeks. Then, chemical disinfection was performed, and triple antibiotic paste (TAP) or EMD was applied in the root canals. A control group did not receive any treatment. Radiographic and histological data were evaluated after 3 and 6 weeks.
RESULTS: At 3 weeks, TAP promoted a milder inflammatory

Strength of the bond of root canal sealers to gutta-percha seems to be an important property for maintaining the integrity of the apical seal. In the few studies published, different models and assessment methods were used. The purpose of our study was to adapt an effective and easily reproducible model and to test it on nine contemporary commercially available endodontic sealers. Gutta-percha disks with a diameter of 10 mm and thickness of 2 mm were prepared by warming gutta-percha cones and then fixed with plaster in 1-inch phenolic rings. Five-millimeter long sections of polyethylene tubing

AIM: To report on the management of two patients with mucosal fenestration of root apices.
SUMMARY: Two cases of mucosal fenestration of root apices were treated by a combination of nonsurgical root canal treatment and surgery. Root-end resection was performed to bring the root apices within the alveolus before root-end filling and packing of the bony defects with demineralized freeze-dried bone allograft. The areas were then covered with connective tissue grafts taken from the hard palate before repositioning the mucogingival flap. At 1 year follow-up, the mucosal fenestrations were complete

We present 2 cases of intra-arterial injection of endodontic calcium hydroxide via the root canal system of molar teeth. Nonsetting calcium hydroxide paste was used as a temporary dressing during endodontic treatment and in both cases delivered via an injectable syringe technique. Retrograde flow of the calcium hydroxide occurred along the artery until its origin where orthograde flow continued to the capillary bed. Case 1 demonstrates calcium hydroxide injected into the distal root canal of a lower second molar resulting in its distribution to the external carotid bed and case 2 demonstrates

AIM: Periapical mucositis (PAM) is defined as inflammation of the periapical tissues and localized oedema of the maxillary sinus mucosa, typically resulting from periradicular disease. Radiographically on cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), PAM presents as mucosal thickening or a dome-shaped soft tissue expansion along the floor of the maxillary sinus, adjacent to the affected root apex. Although several studies have evaluated PAM, their findings vary considerably. This study aims (1) to evaluate the prevalence of PAM in maxillary posterior teeth amongst patients at NYU College of Dentistry,

Patients with skeletal Class III malocclusion may have limited alveolar support around the mandibular incisors, but conventional cephalometric measures do not directly describe the root-alveolus relationship. This retrospective cross-sectional study quantified labial and lingual alveolar bone thickness and examined whether signed IA-PAMD indicated apical root position within the symphysis. Pretreatment cone-beam computed tomography and lateral cephalometric records from 80 untreated patients (320 incisors) with signed ANB < 0° were analyzed. Bone thickness was measured at three root levels. Co
