The association of systemic condition and medications on alveolar bone loss and tooth attrition.

OBJECTIVE: Periodontal disease is caused by subgingival bacteria that adversely affect the host immune system and create and maintain unmitigated inflammation in gingival and periodontal tissues. The condition is also linked to systemic conditions including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and arthritis. Periodontitis elevates the bacterial load and spreads systemic inflammation through infection and inflammation. The main radiographic sign of periodontitis is marginal bone loss. Risk factors, including medications, smoking, age, and sex, are known to influence periodontal health. However, th

Clinicial-pathologic correlations of non-trauma related Odontodysplasia in 28 dogs: 2013-2023.

Odontodysplasia is an uncommon dental developmental disorder associated with enamel, dentin, pulp abnormalities, and overall tooth morphology. The affected tooth is grossly abnormal in size and contour and is commonly associated with swelling of the affected area and failure of eruption. Histologically, the enamel and dentin are hypoplastic and hypomineralized. Odontodyplasia occurs most commonly in response to direct trauma to the developing tooth bud (enamel organ and dental follicle). Data on the prevalence and features of non-traumatic odontodysplasia are lacking. Medical records of dogs d

Oral Organoids: Progress and Challenges.

Oral organoids are complex 3-dimensional structures that develop from stem cells or organ-specific progenitors through a process of self-organization and re-create architectures and functionalities similar to in vivo organs and tissues in the oral and maxillofacial region. Recently, striking advancements have been made in the construction and application of oral organoids of the tooth, salivary gland, and tongue. Dental epithelial and mesenchymal cells isolated from tooth germs or derived from pluripotent stem cells could generate tooth germ-like organoids by self-organization in a specific cu

Systemic administration of quality- and quantity-controlled PBMNCs reduces bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of jaw-like lesions in mice.

BACKGROUND: Definitive treatment strategies for bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ) have not been developed. Cell-based therapy is an attractive treatment method for intractable diseases in the medical and dental fields; however, approval has been challenging in dentistry. Recently, we developed quality- and quantity (QQ)-controlled peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMNCs) that have anti-inflammatory and pro-angiogenesis effects. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of QQ-controlled PBMNC transplantation on BRONJ-like lesions in mice. METHODS: To create

Patterns of nonsyndromic tooth agenesis and sexual dimorphism.

BACKGROUND: Sex dimorphism has been implicated in oral health differences and the pathogenesis of oral diseases, such as tooth agenesis, periodontal disease, dental caries, and tooth loss. Tooth agenesis (TA) is one of the most common developmental anomalies in humans, and its prevalence and patterns are different across ethnic groups. The aim of this study was to investigate the phenotypes and sex-associated patterns of nonsyndromic tooth agenesis (TA) in Thai dental patients. METHODS: One thousand ninety panoramic radiographs were examined. One hundred and one subjects (37 males, 64 females

Rodents as an animal model for studying tooth extraction-related medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw: assessment of outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the outcomes of several rodent animal models for studying tooth extraction-related medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ). DESIGN: After a search of the databases, 2004 articles were located, and 118 corroborated the inclusion factors (in vivo studies in rodents evaluating tooth extraction as a risk factor for the development of MRONJ). RESULTS: Numerous studies attempting to establish an optimal protocol to induce MRONJ were found. Zoledronic acid (ZA) was the most used drug, followed by alendronate (ALN). Even when ZA did not lead to the development of MRO

Dental Implants: Adjacent Tooth Proximity and Contact.

During the osteotomy and placement of dental implants, anatomical positions of adjacent natural teeth to a dental implant site may be very close or in actual contact. This can be due to anatomy, the size of the implant site, a misguided osteotomy, drifting, or migration of the adjacent tooth. The implant surgeon needs to be aware of the position of adjacent teeth to avoid root damage from the implant drill or the implant itself. The dimension of 1.5-mm space has been discussed, but it is an arbitrary speculative dimension. There is no agreed-upon "safe" proximity to adjacent tooth roots. Theor

Blocking mitochondrial calcium release in Schwann cells prevents demyelinating neuropathies.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Schwann cells produce myelin sheath around peripheral nerve axons. Myelination is critical for rapid propagation of action potentials, as illustrated by the large number of acquired and hereditary peripheral neuropathies, such as diabetic neuropathy or Charcot-Marie-Tooth diseases, that are commonly associated with a process of demyelination. However, the early molecular events that trigger the demyelination program in these diseases remain unknown. Here, we used virally delivered fluorescent probes and in vivo time-lapse imaging in a mouse model of demyelination to investigate the underlying …

Human oral microbial ecology and dental caries and periodontal diseases.

In the human oral cavity, which is an open growth system, bacteria must first adhere to a surface in order to be able to colonize. Ability to colonize a non-shedding tooth surface is necessary prior to any odontopathic or periodontopathic process. Complex microbe-host relationships occur and must be studied before the commensal-to-pathogenic nature of the human indigenous oral flora can be understood. Medical pathogens, if present in the appropriate host, always produce specific disease. Caries and periodontal diseases are conditional diseases, requiring numbers of certain indigenous species a

Non-surgical treatment of maxillary lateral incisor double dens invaginatus type Ⅲ with apical periodontitis.

Dental invagination is an abnormality of the crown or root development induced during tooth germ development when the enamel-forming apparatus or epithelial root sheath overpopulates and folds into the papilla. In severe cases, the invaginated channels are connected to the pulp and periodontal tissues, often causing endodontic and periapical diseases. The complex anatomical pattern of this disease adds difficulty in its preoperative diagnosis and clinical operation. In this paper, we report a case of non-surgical treatment assisted by cone beam CT and microscopy for maxillary lateral incisor d

Multiple supernumerary teeth in the maxillary canine and mandibular premolar regions: a case in the postpermanent dentition.

BACKGROUND: A supernumerary tooth is an extra tooth above the normal number, of which approximately 90% occur in the premaxillary region and show rudimentary forms of crown morphology. Most cases occur singly, with bilateral occurrence in the maxillary canine regions very rare in children with no other associated diseases or syndromes. CASE REPORT: A case of a 14-year-old boy with bilateral supernumerary teeth with normal crown shapes in both the maxillary canine and mandibular premolar regions. The supernumerary teeth in the maxilla were diagnosed at 12.2 years of age and in the mandible at

Tooth loss in aggressive periodontitis: a systematic review.

Aggressive periodontitis (AgP) is thought to have a faster rate of progression than chronic periodontitis (CP). However, there is a lack of studies systematically investigating disease progression and tooth loss in AgP. A systematic search of the literature was conducted by two independent reviewers for longitudinal studies including patients with AgP (previously known as 'periodontosis', 'juvenile' or 'early-onset' periodontitis) indicating measures of disease progression. Ovid MEDLINE(®) and Embase databases were searched for at least 5-year longitudinal human studies in AgP patients. In tot

Pamidronate decreases bilirubin-impaired cell death and improves dentinogenic dysfunction of stem cells from human deciduous teeth.

BACKGROUND: Hyperbilirubinemia that occurs in pediatric liver diseases such as biliary atresia can result in the development of not only jaundice in the brain, eyes, and skin, but also tooth abnormalities including green pigmentation and dentin hypoplasia in the developing teeth. However, hyperbilirubinemia-induced tooth impairments remain after liver transplantation. No effective dental management to prevent hyperbilirubinemia-induced tooth impairments has been established. METHODS: In this study, we focused on pamidronate, which is used to treat pediatric osteopenia, and investigated its ef

Reduction in Gingival Bleeding after Atelocollagen Injection in Patients with Hashimoto's Disease-A Pilot Study.

Periodontal diseases are one of the main causes of tooth loss and the second most common oral disease after carries. Patients with autoimmune diseases, such as Hashimoto's disease, are more often vulnerable to infection. In the study group of patients, despite the lack of other signs of gingivitis, bleeding occurred after tooth brushing or minor trauma. Bleeding on probing is the first objective sign of ongoing inflammation. The study was conducted on a group of 17 patients diagnosed with Hashimoto's disease. The atelocollagen Linerase (100 mg) thinned with 5 mL 0.9% NaCl was used. A total of
