[Complications of marrow harvesting for transplantation].

Seventy-four responses were received from a questionnaire which had been mailed to 91 bone marrow transplantation institutes throughout Japan to assess the activity of bone marrow transplantation and complications in bone marrow donors. A total of 2329 bone marrow harvests, performed from 1688 adult donors and 641 child donors for allogeneic or syngeneic transplantation up to August 1992, were available for study. Analyses of the responses showed slight diversity regarding the marrow harvesting preparation and methods of the different bone marrow programs. The resulting perioperative complicat

Immediate Tooth Replacement in the Esthetic Zone with the Socket Shield Technique and a Novel Body-Shift Implant: A Pilot Study with Up to 3 Years of Follow-up.

Successful rehabilitation of the anterior maxilla remains a challenge, primarily due to postextraction ridge collapse, which can lead to gingival recession and a nonesthetic appearance. The socket shield technique presents a viable alternative for immediate dental implant placement in the esthetic zone. This pilot study aimed to evaluate the survival, complication rates, and marginal bone loss around body-shift implants placed in fresh extraction sockets with the socket shield technique to replace maxillary incisors. After socket shield preparation, 14 hopeless incisors were extracted and imme

Comparison of imaging modalities in the diagnosis of external cervical resorption (ECR): an in-vitro study.

External cervical resorption is a pathological condition affecting the cervical margins of teeth. Due to the increased prevalence and the area it affects, it can be easily misdiagnosed. The ability of clinicians to diagnose ECR and subcategorise the lesions using periapical radiographs and cone beam-CT scans has not been investigated in-depth. This study aims to assess if diagnostic ability to detect ECR lesions with the two modalities was different and if there was a change in the diagnosis when CBCT was used. A human skull, including the mandible was used for this study. The teeth were rando

Management of alveolar clefts.

The management of alveolar clefts has changed through the years as medical knowledge has improved. An alveolar cleft is the result of abnormal primary palate formation during weeks 4 to 12 of gestation. The rationale for its closure includes 1) stabilizing the maxillary arch, 2) permitting support for tooth eruption, 3) eliminating oronasal fistulae, and 4) providing improved esthetic results. Methods for closure of the alveolar cleft have been solidified during the last century with the use of bone grafting. Secondary bone grafting is now the preferred method of treatment, because early graft

Safety of Hibitane. II. Human experience.

Chlorhexidine has been widely used in medical practice since its introduction on to the marked in the early 1950s. Primarily it has been used for topical antisepsis, e.g. pre-surgery skin preparation, burns prophylaxis, and prior to obstetrical/gynaecological procedures. This extensive experience has demonstrated the virtual absence of sensitization and a low irritancy potential for the compound. Only one significant adverse effect has been identified during medical use, namely, the production of sensorineural deafness after direct instillation into the middle ear, a property shared by several

Comparative efficacy of ultrasonic, diode laser, and manual irrigant activation around an apically separated instrument: an in vitro study.

BACKGROUND: The fracture of a nickel-titanium instrument in the apical third of a root canal presents a significant clinical challenge, as it creates a compacted barrier of dentinal debris and smear layer that is shielded by a vapor lock, severely limiting irrigant efficacy. This study aimed to compare the efficacy of Ultrasonic Activation (UAI), Diode Laser-Activated Irrigation (LAI), and Manual Dynamic Agitation (MDA) in overcoming this barrier by evaluating both irrigant penetration and direct debris removal. METHODS: Ninety human mandibular first molars with standardized, non-bypassable a

Morphometric Mapping of Mandibular Incisor Root Canals and Its Implications for Instrument Size-taper Selection.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to characterize the morphology of mandibular incisor root canals and to evaluate their correspondence with commonly used nickel-titanium (NiTi) instruments. METHODS: One hundred extracted human mandibular incisors were scanned using high-resolution micro-computed tomography. Minor and major canal diameters and aspect ratios were measured at 1-mm intervals from the apical foramen to 10 mm coronally. Canal cross-sections were classified as round, long-oval, or flat based on aspect ratio. A supplementary analysis determined the percentage frequency of canals with d

Root canal cleaning in roots with complex canals using agitated irrigation fluids.

The internal topography of the root canal is complex, especially for the mesial root of the permanent first molar. In response to such challenges, enhanced irrigation protocols have been developed, using laser pulses to agitate fluids and enhance the removal of microbial deposits. The aim of this laboratory study was to assess the effectiveness of laser agitation of sodium hypochlorite in removing multispecies biofilms grown in the mesial root of the permanent first molars. The five agitation groups (N = 12 roots for each) were: 940 nm diode laser (superpulsed mode, 50 μs/pulses at 20 Hz using
