Marine heatwaves shape size-dependent thermal exposure, habitat use and marine residency in Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus).

Marine heatwaves (MHWs) are increasing in high-latitude oceans, yet behavioural responses of anadromous fishes to these potential stressors during short marine feeding seasons remain poorly understood. We combined acoustic telemetry (internal temperature and depth) with satellite-derived sea surface temperature data to quantify Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus) responses to MHWs in the coastal Labrador Sea across two contrasting summers: 2023, with frequent early-season MHWs, and 2024, dominated by a late-season event. Using non-MHW detections, we fit seasonal baselines for each fish and calcul

Non-lethal detection of Eubothrium crassum (Cestoda) in farmed Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar, using anal swabs and real-time PCR.

Detection of intestinal parasites in fish typically requires autopsy, resulting in the sacrifice of the fish. Here, we describe a non-lethal method for detecting the tapeworm Eubothrium crassum in fish using anal swabs and real-time PCR detection. Two assays were developed to detect cytochrome oxidase I (COI) mitochondrial DNA and 18S ribosomal DNA sequences of E. crassum, respectively. The assays were tested on swab samples from confirmed pathogen free Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) and on samples from farmed Atlantic salmon, where the presence and intensity of parasites had been establishe

Enhanced catalytic degradation of tetracycline antibiotic by persulfate activated with modified sludge bio-hydrochar.

In this research, a one-pot prepared modified sludge bio-hydrochar (IBHC) was prepared to activate persulfate (PS) for the degradation of tetracycline (TC) antibiotic. The obtained IBHC bearing defect structure, dispersed iron and large amounts of surface organic functional groups, acts as an outstanding modified biomass carbonaceous material for catalyzing PS to improve the removal efficiency of TC as high as 99.72%. The IBHC + PS system can remove TC effectively with a relative low IBHC dosage (0.2 g·L-1), limited PS consumption (5 mmol·L-1) and wide pH values (2-10). In addition, the degrad

Pressure shock triploidization of Salmo trutta f. lacustris and Salvelinus umbla eggs and its impact on fish development.

The study tested the efficiency of hydrostatic pressure triploidization methods for Salmo trutta f. lacustris and Salvelinus umbla and investigated the effects on survival rate, skeletal malformation, and on morphometrics and cellular composition of gills, spleen, liver, kidney, intestine, and blood. In Salmo trutta f. lacustris a 100% triploidy rate in combination with high larvae survival rate (80% in comparison to control) was obtained when treating eggs with a pressure of 66 × 103 kPa 360 °C temperature minutes (CTM) post fertilization for 5 min, in Salvelinus umbla with a similar pressure

Effects-based chemical category approach for prioritization of low affinity estrogenic chemicals.

Regulatory agencies are charged with addressing the endocrine disrupting potential of large numbers of chemicals for which there is often little or no data on which to make decisions. Prioritizing the chemicals of greatest concern for further screening for potential hazard to humans and wildlife is an initial step in the process. This paper presents the collection of in vitro data using assays optimized to detect low affinity estrogen receptor (ER) binding chemicals and the use of that data to build effects-based chemical categories following QSAR approaches and principles pioneered by Gilman

[Individual differences in susceptibility to motion sickness].

Several different theories exist about the origin of kinetosis and the space adaptation syndrome, with individual sensitivities differing significantly. One explanation involves the hypothesis of a different otolith mass between the right and left statolith organ and especially a difference in the utricles. A difference in mass results in a different sensitivity to acceleration. For this reason we measured interindividual variances in saccular and utricular otolith mass. Since the anatomy of the vestibular organ in vertebrates is based as similar principles, we selected fish (salmon and trout)…

Transcriptional profiling of both gills and liver in wild brook charr Salvelinus fontinalis (Mitchill, 1814) populations along a gradient of environmental stressors across the Saint-Pierre and Miquelon archipelago (France).

Natural and anthropogenic environments may have strong impacts on wildlife. The Saint-Pierre and Miquelon archipelago (France) provides a gradient of environmental and anthropogenic pressures relevant to investigate physiological responses in wild brook charr Salvelinus fontinalis populations. This species is the only diadromous species present on the archipelago that is targeted in recreational fisheries, and a better knowledge of native populations is required to support conservation and management activities. We tested the hypothesis that transcriptional phenotypes of brook charr differ amo

Diets of sculpins (Myoxocephalus spp.) and Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus) during a spring resource pulse in the Canadian Arctic.

The Arctic is one of the fastest-warming marine regions in the world, which is changing the timing of seasonal sea-ice dynamics. The annual summer breakup of sea-ice coincides with resource pulses, which provide critical food sources for consumers to exploit. Marine organisms respond behaviourally to exploit these resources, with some migrating to presumably maximize feeding opportunities, whereas others remain resident, providing an ideal model to assess potential variability in fish movements and feeding. To assess variability in how migratory and resident fishes exploit increases in resourc

Mercury-binding capacity of organic and inorganic selenium in rat blood and liver.

The mercury-binding capacity of seleno-DL-methionine and selenium dioxide was assessed in male Wistar rats. Mercury was supplied as fish loaves made of northern pike or rainbow trout. We used a selenium concentration of 3.4 mg/kg fish, about sixfold compared to the equivalent quantity of mercury. Seleno-DL-methionine had a tendency to increase both methyl mercury and total mercury in blood, although it also seemed to reduce the proportion of methyl mercury of total mercury. Selenium dioxide lowered mercury levels by 24-29% both in the blood and in the liver of rats that were fed with northern …

[Eight cases of diphyllobothriasis].

Eight cases of diphyllobothriasis have been experienced in the Juntendo University Hospital. Seven of the 8 patients excreted tapeworm fragments. Eggs of Diphyllobothrium latum were found in the feces in 5 cases. One patient had a history of ingestion of raw trout (Sushi), and 2 raw salmon. One might have been infected in foreign countries, and 3 could not tell the source of infection. Bithoinol was administered orally to 7 patients. Four of the 7 excreted the worm and the scolex was recognized in three of the four. Neither recurrence nor abnormal findings have been recognized so far.

A new method for regionalization of the vertebral column in salmonids based on radiographic hallmarks.

Current procedures to establish vertebral column regionalization (e.g., histology) in fish are time consuming and difficult to apply. The aim of this study was to develop a more rapid and accurate radiology-based method for Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). A detailed analysis of 90 animals (4 kg) led to the establishment of region-specific radiographic hallmarks. To elucidate its transferability to other salmonid species, radiography was carried out in brown trout (Salmo trutta), Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus), rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha), and Chin…

Detection of 6-PPD and 6-PPDQ in airborne particulates and assessment of their toxicity in lung cells.

The extensive use of synthetic antioxidants, notably N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N'-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine (6-PPD), in rubber-related products, particularly in tire manufacturing, has induced concerns regarding their environmental impact and potential health hazards. Despite the identification of 6-PPD and its derivative, 6-PPD quinone (6-PPDQ), in various water samples and their lethal effects on certain aquatic species (e.g., coho salmon, rainbow trout and brook trout), the levels of airborne 6-PPD/6-PPDQ and their respiratory toxicity remain relatively unexplored. In this study, we aimed to ev…

Utilization of the bone/liver alkaline phosphatase activity ratio in blood plasma as an indicator of ascorbate deficiency in salmonid fish.

The goal of this study was to test the hypothesis that the ratio of liver to bone alkaline phosphatase in blood plasma reflects the ascorbate status in scurvy-prone teleost fish (rainbow trout [Oncorhynchus mykiss]). The studies focused on finding a method for distinguishing bone alkaline phosphatase present in blood plasma from other alkaline phosphatase isoforms. We tested temperature optima and thermostability of liver, kidney, gill cartilage, and intestinal alkaline phosphatases. We did not observe differences among liver, bone, and kidney enzymes with respect to temperature optima and the…

Genetic Evolution of Hepatitis E Virus.

Comparative analysis of the genomic sequences of multiple hepatitis E virus (HEV) isolates has revealed extensive genomic diversity among them. Recently, a variety of genetically distinct HEV variants have also been isolated and identified from large numbers of animal species, including birds, rabbits, rats, ferrets, bats, cutthroat trout, and camels, among others. Furthermore, it has been reported that recombination in HEV genomes takes place in animals and in human patients. Also, chronic HEV infection in immunocompromised individuals has revealed the presence of viral strains carrying inser…

Genotoxic effects of CdS quantum dots and Ag2S nanoparticles in fish cell lines (RTG-2).

The increasing use of nanotechnologies will lead to significant releases of engineered nanoparticles into the aquatic environment, where their impact is still poorly characterized. In the present paper, the genotoxic and cytotoxic properties of CdS quantum dots (QDs) and silver sulphide (Ag2S) coated with methyl polyethylene glycol (M-PEG) were investigated in a rainbow trout cell line (RTG-2). The results showed that CdS QDs were highly cytotoxic at high concentrations (10 and 50μg/ml), and exhibited a concentration-dependent genotoxicity in the sub-toxic range (0.01-1μg/ml) after 24h exposur…

Gonacin: A germ cell-derived hormone with glucogenic, orexigenic, and gonadal activities.

Fish require abundant nutrients to generate a large number of eggs for spawning. Based on the evolutionary conservation of human FBN2 and its C-terminal placensin-like sequences in fish, we identified a peptide hormone gonacin (GONAdal Cell placensIN) and found its high expression in early-stage germ cells in the ovary and testis of zebrafish. We demonstrated that gonacin is essential for food intake, glucose release, and ovarian development in zebrafish. Similar expression patterns and functions of gonacin were also demonstrated in rainbow trout. Gonacin represents the first hormone secreted …

Short circuiting the ocular oxygen concentrating mechanism in the teleost Salmo gairdneri using carbonic anhydrase inhibitors.

Ocular oxygen concentration by the process of counter current multiplication in rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) was rapidly suppressed after intraperitoneal injections of the carbonic anhydrase inhibitor CL-11,366. The rapidity with which this drug acted suggested a short circuiting of the choroidal rete mirabile. A comparison was made between the time after injection of inhibitor at which oxygen concentrating ability was lost to the time after injection of inhibitor at which its presence in red blood cells, choroidal rete, pseudobranch, and retinal tissue was first noted. A scheme for the pos…

Circulating microRNAs reveal egg-brain crosstalk and a brain-predominant microRNA linked to the onset of the next reproductive cycle in iteroparous salmonids.

BACKGROUND: Mechanisms regulating the transition between two consecutive reproductive cycles are complex and remain poorly understood, mostly because they involve a dialog between the ovary and the central nervous system that is difficult to disentangle. RESULTS: In rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), an iteroparous species spawning every year, removal of the eggs from the body cavity was used as a switch to trigger the onset of the next reproductive cycle. Changes in circulating miRNAs (c-miRNAs) levels in blood plasma and ovarian fluid were then monitored over time. Upon removal of the egg…
