We examined the correlations between Structured Interview (SI)-derived hostility scores and resting blood pressure (BP) to see if they would be the same or different for healthy men and women. Standard risk factor information and resting BP measures were obtained from 193 undergraduates (109 men, 84 women), who underwent the SI. Subjects were rated for Potential for Hostility, Hostile Style, Intensity and Content, and completed Antagonism and Neuroticism scales. As expected, SI hostility scores were related to higher resting SBP in men, however; in women, they were related to lower resting SBP

A comparison of Type A behaviour pattern, hostility and Typus Melancholicus (TM) was examined in a sample of 228 Japanese and 121 American college students. It was found that: the Japanese students expressed Type A, especially hostility, less strongly than American ones; TM was seen to the same degree in both Japanese and American students; Type A was related to hostility and TM in both groups of students; and compared with American students, the Japanese students displayed the defensiveness more frequently, and there appeared to be a strong relationship between defensiveness and hostility. In addition to posing a risk for coronary heart disease (CHD), Type A behavior has been suggested as a risk factor for non-CHD illness. Past evidence, however, has relied chiefly on retrospective studies of self-reported illness that failed to control for the potentially confounding effects of negative affectivity. The present investigation was an 18-month prospective study of Type A behavior and medical records of illness in which chronic negative affectivity was also assessed. Negative affectivity was associated with retrospective self-reported illness, but only Type A, as measured by the Je

Previous studies have identified the MMPI-based Cook and Medley hostility scale (Ho) as a predictor of health outcomes. To achieve a better understanding of the construct measured by this scale, Ho items were classified on an a priori basis. Six subsets were identified: Cynicism, Hostile Attributions, Hostile Affect, Aggressive Responding, Social Avoidance, and Other. Study 1 examined the correlations of these subsets with scales of the NEO Personality Inventory in two samples of undergraduates. Good convergent and discriminant validity were demonstrated, but there was some evidence that items

Two hundred eighty-eight eating disorder patients were administered the DSM-III-R Structured Clinical Interview (SCID) and the DSM-IV SCID for axis I and II. Concordance between DSM-III-R and DSM-IV was excellent for the axis I affective and anxiety disorders, bulimia nervosa, and substance abuse/dependence. It was also excellent for axis II paranoid, schizoid, borderline, and antisocial personality disorders. Agreement between the two nosological systems was lower for alcohol abuse/dependence with a kappa of.63. Kappas were also poor for the following personality disorders: schizotypal (.44),

OBJECTIVE: Current diagnostic nomenclature includes "atypical" eating disorders (EDs) under the term other specified feeding or eating disorder (OSFED). Previous studies suggest that individuals with OSFED have similar psychological and concurrent symptoms to individuals with "classical" EDs. Our study compared people with OSFED to those with classical EDs on indices reflecting ED pathology, concurrent psychological symptoms, personality traits, functional impairment, illness duration, and pretreatment motivation. We also compared OSFED variants characterized solely by restrictive eating behav

BACKGROUND: Knowledge about the impacts of child abuse and neglect (CAN) experiences on late adolescent psychopathology has been limited by a failure to consider the frequent co-occurrence of CAN types and potential unique impacts of specific combinations.
OBJECTIVE: Using person-centered analyses, we aimed to identify unobserved groups of youth with similar patterns of lifetime CAN experiences before age 16 and differences in psychopathology symptom counts between groups two years later.
PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Participants were 919 adolescent-caregiver dyads (56% female; 56% Black, 7% La

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a complex neurologic and neuropathologic process that may affect the patient's behavior permanently. Clinically, TBI is associated with a wide gamut of neurologic and psychiatric disorders, such as amnesia, cognitive decline, seizures, attention and concentration deficits, depression, manic behavior, psychosis, hostile and violent behavior, and personality alterations. Therapy and rehabilitative efforts should be designed based on the type of injury and the patient's specific needs. Gaining familiarity with the behavioral disorders outlined in this article and u

Mixed states are complex manifestations of bipolar disorders. Pathophysiology of mixed states remains unclear. Several models have been proposed to understand the mechanisms underlying these mood states. These models describe mixed state either as a combinaison of depression and mania, as well as a transition between mania and depression, or mixed state as a severe type of depression or mania. Pathophysiological hypotheses involve temperaments or some personality disorders, psychiatric comorbidities as well as substance use disorders, or thyroid dysfunction. However, the formal demonstration o

This paper is dedicated to the honour of Prof. Dr. Erich Sternberg. The diagnostical strategy of well-known specialists for the Morbus Pick and Morbus Alzheimer is considered. As a result of our own experiences and analyses the psychopathological factors are assigned to the following groups: change of vitality; change of personality; reversible organic psychoses; fuzzy brain-local symptoms; development of dementia. For these groups growth curves are given for which the analytic description by a special type of a differential equation, is used. The different behaviour of the development of the

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to analyze the potential association between personality traits and onabotulinumtoxin A (onabotA) response in patients with chronic migraine (CM).
BACKGROUND: Previous studies from a categorial perspective show that patients with CM have anxious or obsessive personality according to the Salamanca screening test. However, the influence of personality traits in onabotA response in patients with CM has not yet been studied. We hypothesize that cluster C personality traits may be associated with non-response to onabotA.

The Type A behaviour pattern and other measures of psychological traits and symptom states were assessed in 92 subjects (predominantly male) presenting for coronary angiography. These measures were correlated with three angiographic indices of coronary heart disease (CHD) severity and two clinical indices (angina and the duration of CHD). The only psychological measures associated with atherosclerosis (assessed by angiography) were indices of personality: Type A (the Jenkins Activity Survey), trait tension, trait anxiety and suppression of anger. It was concluded that these traits may have som

BACKGROUND: Relative risk estimates of familial aggregation of many types of mental disorders are available, but absolute risk estimates of familial aggregation of mental disorders remain sparse. The proportion of individuals who develop a mental disorder in the absence of the same disorder in a relative (non-familial cases) has not been examined. We aimed to create comprehensive risk estimates of the familial aggregation of mental disorders.

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is often associated with psychiatric disorders, which are more frequent in NF1 than in general population (33% of patients). Dysthymia is the most frequent diagnosis (21% of patients). There is also a high prevalence of depressive mood (7%), anxiety (1-6%), and personality (3%) disorders. The risk of suicide is four times greater than in the general population. Bipolar mood disorders or schizophrenia appear to be rare. The impaired quality of life associated with NF1 may play an important role in the development of psychiatric disorders. Quality of life assessmen

Outpatient detoxification of patients with alcohol or other drug addiction is being increasingly undertaken. This type of management is appropriate for patients in stage I or stage II of withdrawal who have no significant comorbid conditions and have a support person willing to monitor their progress. Adequate dosages of appropriate substitute medications are important for successful detoxification. In addition, comorbid psychiatric, personality and medical disorders must be managed, and social and environmental concerns need to be addressed. By providing supportive, nonjudgmental, yet asserti

The phenomenon of nomophobia, defined as the anxiety experienced when a person is without their mobile phone or is unable to use it, has been identified as having serious negative effects on individuals, particularly students. Previous research has explored the relationship between personality traits and nomophobia, but the findings have been inconclusive. The main objective of this study was to classify personality types through latent class analysis and explore the relationship between these personality types and nomophobia. The Chinese version of the Nomophobia Scale and the Chinese brief v

Childhood adversities frequently precede adulthood depression and anxiety. Yet, how they impact needed treatment duration, type or focus in these common disorders, is unclear. For developing more individualized and precise interventions, we investigated whether specific early adversities associate with patients' distinct psychiatric problems, psychological vulnerabilities, and suitability for psychotherapy. A total of 221 depressed and anxious adult outpatients (excluding psychotic, severe personality, bipolar, and substance abuse disorders) referred from community, student, occupational, and

BACKGROUND: Crohn's disease (CD) is associated with smoking, while ulcerative colitis (UC) is largely a disease of nonsmokers. We aimed to test whether the smoking-linked personality characteristic "impulsive sensation seeking" (ImpSS) is correlated to the differences in smoking in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
METHODS: In 185 IBD patients, the General Health Questionnaire and the Zuckerman-Kuhlman Personality Questionnaire (ZKPQ) were administered. The Fagerstrom Test for Nicotine Dependence was used to assess smokers' nicotine dependence.
RESULTS: CD patients were twice as likely to be

BACKGROUND: Personality disorders (PDs) as assessed by questionnaires and personal interviews are heritable. However, we know neither how much unreliability of measurement impacts on heritability estimates nor whether the genetic and environmental risk factors assessed by these two methods are the same. We wish to know whether the same set of PD vulnerability factors are assessed by these two methods.
METHOD: A total of 3334 young adult twin pairs from the Norwegian Institute of Public Health Twin Panel (NIPHTP) completed a questionnaire containing 91 PD items. One to 6 years later, 1386 of t
