Cryptosporidiosis in people sharing habitats with free-ranging mountain gorillas (Gorilla gorilla beringei), Uganda.

Cryptosporidiosis, a zoonotic diarrheal disease, significantly contributes to the mortality of people with impaired immune systems worldwide. Infections with an animal-adapted genotype (Genotype 2) of Cryptosporidium parvum were found in a human population in Uganda that shares habitats with free-ranging gorillas, from which the same genotype of C. parvum had been recovered previously. A high prevalence of disease was found in park staff members (21%) who frequently contact gorillas versus 3% disease prevalence in the local community. This indicates a zoonotic transmission cycle of this pathog…

Risk factors for treatment failure after melarsoprol for Trypanosoma brucei gambiense trypanosomiasis in Uganda.

We evaluated the treatment failure rate among late-stage human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) patients treated with melarsoprol in Arua, northern Uganda, between September 1995 and August 1996, and identified the risk factors for treatment failure. We conducted a retrospective cohort study in October 1998, and performed a survival analysis. A treatment failure was defined as a late-stage HAT patient fully treated with melarsoprol and classified as an HAT case at any follow-up visit within 2 years after treatment. Among 428 patients treated in the study period, 130 (30.4%) were identified as tre…

Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus and Kaposi's sarcoma in Africa. Uganda Kaposi's Sarcoma Study Group.

BACKGROUND: Endemic Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is a clinically and epidemiologically distinct human immunodeficiency virus negative form of KS occurring in Africa. Kaposi's sarcoma is now the most frequently reported cancer in some areas of Africa. OBJECTIVE: To determine if a KS-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) is present in both endemic HIV-seronegative and HIV-seropositive KS lesions from African patients. METHODS: Paraffin-embedded tissue specimens from Ugandan patients with KS and non-KS tumor control patients attending a university-based oncology clinic were examined in a blinded case-control …

Yellow fever immunity surveys in northern Uganda and Kenya and eastern Somalia, 1966-67.

Recent epidemics of yellow fever in eastern Africa have stimulated serological surveys in the Karamoja district of Uganda, the northern frontier district of Kenya and the Giohar district of Somalia. All sera collected in the surveys were screened for group B arbovirus antibody using the HI test. Yellow fever immunity was confirmed by the mouse-protection test.No yellow fever immunity was found in sera collected from a residential tribal group at Karamoja but a small number of samples from persons who had previously lived outside the district showed immunity. Immunity was detected in sera from …

Screenshots, SIM Cards, and Household Governance: Digital Coercive Control and Evidence Making in Uganda.

Tech facilitated intimate partner violence is increasingly embedded in everyday Ugandan digital life, including phone confiscation, SIM card control, WhatsApp monitoring, coerced "proof," mobile money coercion, and reputational threats. This article examines digital coercive control as household governance and analyses how survivors and frontline supporters produce evidence under threat, focusing on the practical work of assembling "evidence packages" that may include screenshots, voice notes, timelines, and witnesses. Drawing on comparative qualitative research across an informal settlement i…

Men's preferences for HIV self-test distribution strategies in Uganda: A discrete choice experiment.

INTRODUCTION: HIV-self testing (HIVST) can increase men's HIV testing in Eastern and Southern Africa (ESA). While secondary HIVST distribution from pregnant women to male partners is standard of care in ESA, little is known about men's preferences for HIVST distribution strategies. METHODS: We administered a Discrete Choice Experiment (DCE) to men from Kampala and Wakiso, Uganda. DCE Attributes were: HIVST distributor (counselor, community health worker, partner, pharmacy staff), distributor sex, HIVST type (oral, blood-based), counseling/support (toll-free hotline, in-person, SMS) and HIVST …

Sustained High Prevalence of Multiple Antimalarial Drug Resistance Markers in Uganda in 2023-24.

The emergence and spread of drug resistance threatens malaria control in Uganda. This study reports new data on key polymorphisms associated with antimalarial drug sensitivity at 32 malaria reference centers in Uganda in 2023 and 2024. Samples were collected from patients aged >6 months presenting with uncomplicated falciparum malaria, sequenced using the MAD4HatTeR panel and Illumina platforms. Multiple validated or candidate K13 mutations associated with artemisinin partial resistance were detected at ≥20% prevalence at one or more sites across multiple timepoints. The K13 mutations A675V an…

Early-Onset Neonatal Pityriasis Versicolor Associated With Maternal Infection: A Case Report From Uganda.

We report a case of early-onset neonatal pityriasis versicolor (PV) in a term newborn associated with maternal infection. The mother had characteristic hypo- and hyperpigmented, finely scaly lesions over the neck and upper trunk prior to delivery. Within the first weeks of life, the neonate developed multiple hypopigmented, finely scaly macules involving the trunk and proximal thighs. The infant was otherwise clinically well, with no history of prematurity, neonatal intensive care unit admission, antibiotic exposure, or underlying medical illness. The clinical features were consistent with PV,

Plasmodium falciparum Kelch-13 artemisinin partial resistance markers in Fort Portal, Western Uganda, 2024.

In Fort Portal, Uganda, artemisinin resistance-associated mutations in Plasmodium falciparum Kelch13 (n = 126) were present in 4.8% (675V, 561H, and 441L). A mutation of unknown relevance, 490T, occurred in 9.5%. PfMDR1 variants suggested increased lumefantrine tolerance (N86, 100%). Mutation 500N was absent, and 199S occurred in 12.8%. The latter is of unknown relevance. These data indicate an incipient emergence of artemisinin resistance in a crucial location between Rwandan and Ugandan resistance hotspots and hardly affected DR Congo.

Prolonged antiretroviral therapy use and hypertension in a retrospective cross-sectional study-Rakai, Uganda.

BACKGROUND: While antiretroviral therapy (ART) reduces AIDS-related morbidity and mortality, it is unclear if prolonged ART use among people living with HIV (PLHIV) increases the risk of hypertension. OBJECTIVE: We assessed the association between the duration of ART use and hypertension in the Rakai Community Cohort Study (RCCS). DESIGN: We conducted a cross-sectional study among PLHIV (35-49 years old) on ART in the RCCS who were surveyed between August 2016 and May 2018. METHODS: Systolic and diastolic blood pressure (BP) was measured twice, averaged, and classified as any hypertension (
