Patients undergoing gynecological surgery commonly receive indwelling transurethral Foley catheters, however duration of catheterization is associated with risk of urinary tract infections and other adverse effects. Early removal of catheters is encouraged, however optimal timing postsurgery remains unclear. This quasi-experimental study compared outcomes for women after removal of a Foley catheter at two different times following benign gynecological surgery. Participants received either early catheter removal, within 6 hours of surgery (n = 38) or standard catheter removal, within 12 to 24 h

The efficacy of phenoxybenzamine in preventing postoperative urinary retention after total hip arthroplasty was investigated in a double-bli … rious coronary heart disease, to prevent infection leading to bacteraemia or other complications of urinary catheterization.

OBJECTIVE: To report a case of congenital pelvic arteriovenous malformation (pAVM) with urinary retention.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION AND INTERVENTION: A 39-year-old male patient presented with inability to void urine for 8 h. He did not have a history of dysuria or fever, but had increasing urinary frequency and difficulty in voiding over 2 years. Examination revealed a suprapubic mass without external signs of vascular anomaly. A huge, soft, irregular, non-pulsating mass was felt rectally. This mass did not disappear on urinary bladder decompression. Subsequent ultrasound and CT scan revealed pA

The aim of the study is to assess the incidence and the pathogenesis of urinary dysfunction in the surgical treatment of rectal cancer. A series of 219 patients, who underwent surgery for rectal cancer with normal urinary preoperative function, was submitted to a prospective follow-up for the urinary function. Symptomatic patients in the follow-up were studied by ultrasonography, cystomanometry and pressure-flow electromyography. In the immediate follow-up only 17 patients with urinary dysfunction were observed (14 at stage 2, 2 at stage 3 an1 at stage 4 according Saito classification). Six mo

PURPOSE: The most frequent complication of surgical hemorrhoidectomy is urinary retention. This study evaluates the incidence of urinary ret … arge less than four hours following surgery). Of these 190 patients, only 1 (0.53 percent) required urinary catheterization during the postoperative period.
CONCLUSIONS: The ambulatory setting, when combined with careful patient education and perioperative fluid restriction, allows surgical hemorrhoidectomy to be performed with a very low incidence of urinary retention …

BACKGROUND: Clean intermittent catheterization (CIC) is an effective method of bladder emptying in children with neurogenic and non-neurogenic disorders that cause difficulty in urination. However, there is a lack of expert consensus on the standardized application of CIC in pediatric populations. This guideline intends to outline recommendations for standardizing CIC in children.
METHODS: A comprehensive literature review was performed by searching key academic databases, specifically PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library, and Web of Science. Eligible literature-including peer-reviewed clinic

The period of spinal shock which frequently follows spinal cord injury is associated with bladder areflexia and urinary retention. We studied the effect of early bladder electric stimulation on detrusor activity during the spinal shock phase in the dog. The animals had a spinal cord section at T10 vertebra and their bladder management was assigned to one of the three following groups: intermittent catheterization, indwelling catheterization and electric bladder stimulation. The parameters for evaluating each treatment included: blood chemistry, radiographic and urodynamic tests. The salient fe

Twenty-four patients, with various combinations of non-healing decubitus ulcers, urethral fistulae, incontinence, and penile skin breakdown were candidates for proximal urinary diversion, having failed intermittent, external, and indwelling catheterization combined with pharmacologic therapy. Seventeen patients underwent bladder neck closure, including seven with multiple sclerosis and ten with spinal cord injury, and because they were unable or unwilling to do catheterization, had their urine diverted by suprapubic catheter. Seven patients, including four with spinal cord injury, underwent bl

We used a standard microwave oven to sterilize red rubber catheters used for intermittent self-catheterization. Catheters were incubated for sixty minutes in a suspension of microorganisms isolated from the urine of patients with urinary tract infections. For each trial, 6 catheters were removed from their respective suspensions, placed in separate plastic freezer bags, distributed evenly in a microwave oven (avoiding cold spots), and microwaved simultaneously for twelve minutes. A control catheter was not microwaved. Two strains of each microorganism were tested. The urinary isolates were Esc

AIMS: Rat cystometry is a common model used to investigate urinary storage and voiding function. The effect of cystometric instrumentation in rat studies might be a source of deviation from normal physiologic responses. We hypothesized that transurethral catheterization would produce obstruction-related changes, and that suprapubic catheterization would limit volume-related functions as well as disrupt normal urothelial sensory function. We investigated the influence of transurethral and suprapubic catheterization on storage and voiding in the rat model.
METHODS: Three groups of female SD rat

There are two methods of draining urine from the bladder via a catheter. They involve intermittent catheterisation or the use of an indwelling catheter. This article outlines the history of urinary catheterisation, reasons for its use, and the rationale for choosing the most appropriate option for patients with urinary dysfunction. Many articles have been written on urinary catheterisation, reasons for insertion and probable catheter-associated problems. In deciding which method of catheterisation is required, whenever possible the needs and views of the patient should be discussed before a de

INTRODUCTION: Bladder catheterization is a common practice after several surgical procedures; a wrong trans-urethral catheter position can affect the outcomes of some urological maneuvers. We assess with a physical model the variation of intra-vesical pressures due to different locations of the catheter.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using a plastic bag fulfilled with 5l of normal saline, we try to reproduce bladder condition assessing pressures in case of catheter located over or under the thigh.
RESULTS: In case of catheter over the thigh, the flow of liquid is not allowed, and only a pressure of
