Articulatory models can be used in phoniatrics for the visualisation of speech disorders, and can thus be used in teaching, the counselling of patients and their relatives, and in speech therapy. The articulatory model developed here was based on static MRI data of sustained sounds. MRI sequences are now being used to further refine the model with respect to speech movements. Medio-sagittal MRI sections were recorded for 12 consonants in the symmetrical context of the three point vowels [i:], [a:] and [u:] for this corpus. The recording-rate was eight images/s. The data show a strong influence

A 48-year-old woman with cyanosis was referred for investigation of atrial septal defect (ASD). Blood gas analysis on admission revealed moderate hypoxemia, and a pressure study during right heart catheterization revealed pulmonary hypertension (PH). Spiral computed tomography (CT) scan disclosed extensive thrombi in dilated large symmetrical pulmonary arteries with clear lung fields, and large strand-like thrombi on the inner surface of the pulmonary arterial wall along the vascular curvature were visualized by virtual CT angioscopic imaging. The thrombi were eventually considered to be not t

The thought translation device trains locked-in patients to self-regulate slow cortical potentials (SCP's) of their electroencephalogram (EEG). After operant learning of SCP self-control, patients select letters, words or pictograms in a computerized language support program. Results of five respirated, locked-in-patients are described, demonstrating the usefulness of the thought translation device as an alternative communication channel in motivated totally paralyzed patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

PURPOSE: In radiation oncology, the integration and registration of multiple imaging modalities is a crucial aspect of the diagnosis and treatment planning process. These images are often inherently registered, a useful feature in most cases, but possibly a hindrance when registration modifications are required. To break this registration requires expert knowledge of file structure or specialized software, posing challenges, and potential errors in accidentally or unnecessarily changing other attributes. Barring these changes, the clinic would have to make do with imprecise registrations which

Soft electronics are an emerging class of mechanically compliant platforms that enable conformal, skin-interfaced sensing and actuation on curvilinear and dynamic surfaces. These systems combine deformation-tolerant electrical functionality with soft contact mechanics, but their in-use performance is strongly influenced by time-varying interfaces, motion-induced artifacts, and the system burden associated with dense multimodal integration. Advances in soft electronics are now converging with artificial intelligence, which supports reliable information extraction from high-dimensional signals a

In the past 20 years, neural engineering has made unprecedented progress in the interpretation of brain information (e.g., brain-computer interfaces) and in neuromodulation (e.g., electromagnetic stimulation and neurofeedback). However, there has been little research aiming to improve the performance of brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) using neuromodulation. The present study presents a novel design for a neurofeedback training (NFT) method to improve the operation of a steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP)-based BCI and further explores its underlying mechanisms. The use of NFT to upre

PURPOSE: Accurate maxillary positioning is critical in digital prosthodontics, particularly when transferring the spatial relationship of the maxilla to a virtual articulator. This study aimed to compare the accuracy of the two most common registration methods, three-dimensional (3D) match and UV (landmark-based point-pair registration) match, for virtual facebow transfer and to investigate whether the type of facial scanner used influences the accuracy of these registration techniques.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scan of a manikin was used as the reference.

BACKGROUND: Three-dimensional digital animation can enable surgeons to create anatomically accurate, virtual models of normal and pathologic human anatomy. From these models, surgical procedures can be digitally performed, recorded, and distributed as a teaching tool or as a virtual surgical atlas. The idea of a virtual surgical atlas has recently become a part of contemporary surgical teaching. In the field of craniofacial surgery, no such educational tool exists. Presented is the first part of the creation of a virtual atlas of craniofacial surgical procedures: the three-dimensional digital

Humans can skillfully grasp a wide variety of things without crushing or dropping them, thanks to their tactile sensory abilities and sensorimotor reflexes. Moreover, humans are not only proficient at reaching and grasping objects but also do so effortlessly, as a large part of their sensorimotor processing occurs subconsciously. However, it is a significant challenge to re - establish the tactile - based sensorimotor reflex abilities for dexterous hand prostheses. This paper proposes a hierarchical sensorimotor controller based on three-axis tactile feedback and an EMG decoder. This work aims

For blind or visually impaired (BVI), the acquisition of three-dimensional (3D) spatial relationships highly depends on touch, proprioception, and active movement experience. Existing training methods are mostly based on 2D tactile graphics or static models and therefore have difficulty providing continuous, controllable, and quantifiable 3D body-motion guidance. To address this issue, this study proposes a 3D spatial perception training method based on cable-driven parallel robot (CDPR) position guidance and virtual-constraint feedback. The CDPR serves as a force-feedback interaction platform

As computers move from desktop screens into our glasses, traditional controllers such as keyboards and mice have proven impractical. A control interface for immersive experiences needs to seamlessly transport intention from the real to the virtual world while remaining portable, accurate, and robust. Here, we present an easy-to-wear, dry-contact and portable ultrasound armband that can decode morphological information and act as a virtual reality controller by predicting hand and wrist kinematics. Using our armband, we collected a large dataset of paired ultrasound and hand kinematics and used

BACKGROUND: Increased tissue stiffness (also termed modulus) has been shown to be a characteristic of potential tumor metastasis. Measured values of the stiffness of tumors and cancer cells are reported in the literature to increase compared to neighboring normal tissues. Yet the relationship between the mechanical properties of cells and the extracellular matrix has yet to be correlated with the histopathology of cancerous lesions.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We have developed a technique to do virtual biopsies of skin lesions by combining images made using optical coherence tomography with stiff

Identifying disease genes from a vast amount of genetic data is one of the most challenging tasks in the post-genomic era. Also, complex diseases present highly heterogeneous genotype, which difficult biological marker identification. Machine learning methods are widely used to identify these markers, but their performance is highly dependent upon the size and quality of available data. In this study, we demonstrated that machine learning classifiers trained on gene functional similarities, using Gene Ontology (GO), can improve the identification of genes involved in complex diseases. For this

The aim of this study was to explore parents' and professionals' thoughts of how a gaze-controlled computer can be beneficial to children with severe multiple disabilities. All systems were provided primarily for symbol-based communication, but were also used for other purposes such as play, leisure and school activities. A further aim was to investigate factors affecting usability, specifically for communication. The study used a qualitative approach, involving content analysis of semistructured interviews with the children's key persons (N = 11). The analysis yielded three categories and twe

PURPOSE: To examine whether performance improvements in the virtual environment generalize to the natural environment.
STUDY DESIGN: we had 64 individuals, 32 of which were individuals with DMD and 32 were typically developing individuals.
METHODS: The groups practiced two coincidence timing tasks. In the more tangible button-press task, the individuals were required to 'intercept' a falling virtual object at the moment it reached the interception point by pressing a key on the computer. In the more abstract task, they were instructed to 'intercept' the virtual object by making a hand moveme
