In 24 control patients the lower oesophageal sphincter responded to graded increments in intra-abdominal pressure by a significant and sustained rise in tone. Bile acids (BAs) circulate between the liver and intestine, and regulate the homeostasis of glucose, lipid, and energy. Truncal vagotomy provokes acute cholecystitis in the stone-containing gallbladder of dogs. An apparently similar sequence has been fortuitously observed in three patients.
