Endotoxin translocation in two models of experimental acute pancreatitis.

To test the hypothesis that endotoxin is absorbed from the gut into the circulation in rats with experimental acute pancreatitis we studied … f endotoxin in liver at 3 and 5 days was predominantly at hepatocytes level around terminal hepatic venules, while in lung a scattered diffuse pattern at the level of alveolar macrophages was identified. A positive staining was observed after 12 hours in the liver, lung, colon and mesenteric lymph nodes of rats with both caerulein pancreatitis and endotox …

Light, scanning electron microscopy of endometrial surface and vascular casts were used to study the vascular architecture of the donkey ute … ridges and grooves by a widely meshed plexus of subepithelial capillary network. The post-capillary venules of the endometrium arise from the subepithelial capillary plexus to form slightly larger veins than the concurrent arteries which join up to the large tortuous veins in the intermuscular vascular layer of the uterus. This arrangement of blood vessel …

Venocclusive disease of the liver after bone marrow transplantation: the role of hemostasis.

Venocclusive disease of the liver is a relatively frequent early complication of bone marrow transplantation related to pre-transplant toxic injury to the liver. Events that lead to toxicity of the liver in the pre-transplant setting are infection, anti-neoplastic and anti-infectious drug administration and radiation. The histological correlates of venocclusive disease are lesions mainly localized to structures in zone 3 of the liver acinus and in the sublobular central venules. At some point in the pathogenesis of venocclusive disease, blood clotting and inflammation occur. The first is chara…

Evidence for a direct arteriovenous connection (A-V shunt) between the testicular artery and pampiniform plexus in the spermatic cord of the tree shrew (Tupaia glis).

In the tree shrew Tupaia glis, 5 or 6 small ramifying arterioles arose directly from the testicular artery and then gave off numerous small capillaries. The capillaries made a series of anastomoses with neighbouring counterpart capillaries to become a complicated network. Some of the capillaries drained into a small venule, which was connected directly with the testicular vein (pampiniform plexus), to form an arteriovenous connection (A-V shunt) between the testicular artery and the pampiniform plexus. This A-V shunt appears to make the transfer of substances from the pampiniform plexus to the

Expression of vascular addressins and ICAM-1 by endothelial cells in the spinal cord during chronic relapsing experimental allergic encephalomyelitis in the Biozzi AB/H mouse.

The expression of adhesion molecules on central nervous system (CNS) endothelia was examined during chronic relapsing experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (CREAE) in the Biozzi AB/H mouse. Active disease episodes (acute and relapse) were associated with the up-regulation of MALA-2, the murine homologue of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), on CNS endothelia and the infiltration of ICAM-1-positive mononuclear cells. In addition, the high endothelial venule (HEV)-associated MECA-325 antigen was evident in perivascular lesions, particularly in relapsing disease. The peripheral lymph n

Pericyte of a teleost fish: ultrastructure, position, and role in neoplasia as revealed by a fish model.

The morphology and position of the pericyte, a periendothelial cell, is described for a teleost fish, Cyprinodon variegatus. This cell was found attached to the abluminal surfaces of capillaries, venules, and arterioles of the submucosa of the midgut of the fish. The cell was encompassed by a thin basal lamina, possessed numerous plasmalemmal vesicles, a "sole region" which contained thinner actin-like filaments and possibly thicker myosin-like filaments, and ranged in form from ovoid to stellate, with long cytoplasmic extensions that partially covered the endothelium of the associated microve…

Reactions of efferent venous segments in the ciliary process vasculature of albino rabbits.

In albino rabbits, the reactions of a defined venous segment of the ciliary process vasculature to vasoactive agents were studied using our new technique of in vivo microendoscopy and using supravital specimens of the anterior eye. This segment is situated in the pars plana of the ciliary body and is the continuation of the venules at the inner edge of the minor and major ciliary processes which posteriorly drain the blood in the veins of the peripheral choroid. Three- to 4 min after administration of carbachol, a constriction of this efferent venous segment was seen in the in vivo microendosc…

Pathohistological and immunohistochemical studies on Castleman's disease of the lymph node.

Histological and immunohistochemical examinations were carried out on lymph nodes in 9 cases with Castleman's disease. In all cases, there were whorled follicle centers and proliferation of blood vessels. These findings were also considered to be important criteria for diagnosis of the plasma cell type of this disease. The whorled follicle centers often consisted of smaller concentrical structures and contained factor VIII-positive cells. In some cases, there were many small whorled structures surrounding postcapillary venules within the interfollicular areas of lymph nodes. These structures h…

Effects of oral and intrauterine administration of contraceptives on the uterus.

Combined regimen contraceptive steroids produce precocious endometrial secretion, followed by involution leading to a suppressed endometrium with small tubular glands and failure of spiral arterioles to develop; decidua-like stromal changes are dose related as is dilatation of venules. Thrombosis of the latter, perhaps estrogen mediated, leads to local tissue infarction and is the proximate cause of "breakthrough bleeding". Sequential regimen contraceptive steroids lead to retarded endometrial secretion, failure of spiral arterioles to develop, and a weak decidua-like stromal transformation. C…

Hydralazine-Induced Antineutrophil Cytoplasmic Antibody Vasculitis Causing Gastroduodenal Artery Perforation.

Antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitides are rare disorders characterized by inflammation of small blood vessels, including capillaries, venules, and arterioles. The three main subtypes of primary ANCA-associated vasculitides (i.e., granulomatosis with polyangiitis, microscopic polyangiitis, and eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis) can present with diverse and nonspecific symptoms, making diagnosis difficult. We report the case of secondary, drug-induced ANCA vasculitis in a female patient who presented with hemoptysis and dyspnea complicated by acute kidney…

Single-cell and spatial transcriptomics implicate a prognostic function of tertiary lymphoid structures in gastric cancer.

Tertiary lymphoid structures (TLSs) have emerged as critical prognostic and immunotherapeutic indicators in cancer, with their clinical significance modulated by spatial distribution patterns and density. Here, we performed integrated single-cell and spatial transcriptomic profiling of 30 gastric cancer (GC) specimens stratified by TLS spatial localization patterns. Comparative analysis shows pronounced enrichment of CXCL13+ T lymphocytes (TLCs), CXCR5+ germinal center B lymphocytes (gc_B cells), LAMP3+CD80+ activated dendritic cells (DCs), and SELP+ACKR1+ high endothelial venule (HEV) cells w

Clinicopathologic features and clinical outcome in a cat with nodal T-zone lymphoma.

CASE SUMMARY: An 11-year-old male castrated domestic shorthair cat presented with increased respiratory effort, pleural effusion, lymphadenopathy, lethargy and decreased appetite with weight loss. A diagnosis of T-zone lymphoma was made from histopathology of an extirpated popliteal lymph node that had a marked paracortical expansion of small lymphocytes and prominent high endothelial venule proliferation. T-cell receptor gamma (TRG) molecular clonality PCR yielded a clonal rearrangement and immunohistochemistry demonstrated that the neoplastic lymphocytes expressed CD3 and did not express CD2
