Usher syndrome (USH) is a clinically heterogeneous condition characterized by sensorineural hearing loss, progressive retinal degeneration, and vestibular dysfunction. A minimum test battery is described as well as additional clinical evaluations that would provide comprehensive testing of hearing, vestibular function, and visual function in USH patients. USH is also genetically heterogeneous. At least nine genes have been identified with mutations that can cause USH. The proteins encoded by these genes are thought to interact with one another to form a network in the sensory cells of the inne

NF2-related Schwannomatosis (NF2-SWN) is a disease that needs new solutions. The hallmark of NF2-SWN, a dominantly inherited neoplasia syndrome, is bilateral vestibular schwannomas (VSs), which progressively enlarge, leading to sensorineural hearing loss, tinnitus, facial weakness, and pain that translates to social impairment and clinical depression. Standard treatments for growing VSs include surgery and radiation therapy (RT); however, both carry the risk of further nerve damage that can result in deafness and facial palsy. The resultant suffering and debility, in combination with the pauci

Unilateral vestibular lesion, as acoustic neuroma and its surgical removal, leads to impaired balance control. After initial vertigo and postural instability corresponding to unilateral vestibular deafferentation, improvement in symptoms and global balance functions occurs by a process called vestibular compensation. In this respect, this prospective study aimed to assess the differential contribution of sensory inputs to the regulation of posture during the recovery process after acoustic neuroma removal. Twenty-seven patients with acoustic neuroma underwent vestibular and posturographic test

PURPOSE: Peripheral vestibular dysfunction following vestibular neuritis (VN) often persists but functional recovery of balance can be variable. The authors compared structural changes in the brain before and after post-VN compensation and related it to the functional recovery.
METHODS: Nine patients diagnosed with unilateral VN were included. Brain MRI and clinical observation were performed within 2 days of acute VN diagnosis and were repeated 3 months after the first exam. Voxel-based morphometry (VBM) analysis for longitudinal data was performed using VBM8 toolbox running within SPM8. Cha

Virtual reality (VR) increasingly causes motion sickness, yet physiological mechanisms and individual susceptibility factors remain unclear. Understanding autonomic nervous system responses and their relationship to vestibular function is crucial for developing safer VR applications. This study aimed to characterize autonomic responses to visually induced motion sickness (VIMS) exposure through heart rate variability (HRV) analysis and determine correlations between vestibular function and motion sickness susceptibility. Thirty participants underwent finger PPG monitoring during baseline, VR e

Vertigo has long been recognized by the clinician as a frequent accompanying symptom of the adult migraine syndrome. This association has not been so readily identified in the pediatric population, and, as a consequence, children undergo unnecessary evaluations. We reviewed the charts of all children and adolescents referred for vestibular function testing to the Balance Center at the Barrow Neurological Institute between July 1994 and July 2000 (N = 31). Items analyzed included age, gender, symptoms that prompted the referral, test outcomes, family medical history, and final diagnosis. The mo

Vestibular compensation is a neurobiological process that allows the recovery of impaired vestibular functions after unilateral vestibular damage. Among the post-injury plasticity mechanisms expressed in the vestibular nuclei (VN) that promote the restoration of balance function, neurogliogenesis and excitability changes appear to be in the forefront. At the central level, the vestibular syndrome expression results from an electrophysiological imbalance between both VN, known to activate the central histaminergic system. In this study, we aimed to investigate the impact of pharmacological modu

BACKGROUND: Spatial memory and orientation deficits often precede cognitive impairment in incipient dementia, e.g., Alzheimer's disease. Therefore, early diagnosis of spatial impairment may be crucial to the initiation of an adequate therapeutic intervention. Subjective tests, such as spatial anxiety and spatial discomfort questionnaires, and objective tests in the form of quantitative measures of orientation, are available. In these tests, vestibular hypofunction has often been neglected as a potential confounder. The major research question in this study was how self-assessed questionnaires

Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is characterized by congenital anomalies traditionally associated with hearing disorders. The present study sought to (a) evaluate possible central hearing loss; (b) verify and extend previous observations on sensorineural and conductive hearing losses; (c) evaluate possible vestibular disorders; (d) examine the relationships between hearing, speech, language, vestibular, and dentofacial disorders in FAS patients; and (e) evaluate the influence of patient age, race, and gender on the expression of these morbidities. A biracial group of 22 FAS patients (aged 3 to 26

IMPORTANCE: Children with profound hearing loss (HL) and vestibular impairment have worse cochlear implant outcomes compared with those without vestibular impairment. However, the decision for cochlear implantation is rarely based on vestibular function assessment as a complement to audiologic testing.
OBJECTIVES: To identify the prevalence of vestibular impairment according to HL origin and to assess the association between vestibular impairment and delayed posturomotor development in children with profound HL.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study was conducted in a pediatri

PURPOSE: The dizziness handicap inventory (DHI) is widely used to evaluate self-perceived handicap due to dizziness, and is known to correlate with vestibular function tests in chronic dizziness. However, whether DHI reflects subjective symptoms during the acute phase has not been studied. This study aims to investigate the correlations of subjective and objective measurements to highlight parameters that reflect the severity of dizziness during the first week of acute unilateral vestibulopathy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-seven patients with acute unilateral vestibulopathy were examined. P…

The aim of the present study is to measure sound sensitivity of the saccule for low frequencies in a population of both young and adult prelingual deaf patients using cervical Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials (cVEMPs) and to correlate the findings obtained with the phonological features. The sensitivity of the saccule to sound stimuli is well known in previous studies. The functional role of the human saccule in responding to sound stimuli is still unclear. The study was conducted on a control population of young and adults with normal hearing. The outcomes showed that the amplitude of my

Vertigo is one of the most common symptom and complaint in the clinical practice. The differential diagnosis can only be attained by a careful interdisciplinary way of thinking and activity, given the fact that the vestibular, neurological and psychiatric disorders--considered as pathogenic factors--are being present simultaneously in triggering the symptoms, and there can be overlaps between the certain pathological processes. The author deals with the co-morbidity of the vertigo and the psychiatric symptoms--anxiety, panic-disorder--, pointing out the common neurobiological and neurophysiolo
