Multimodal and motor influences on orientation: implications for adapting to weightless and virtual environments.

Human sensory-motor control and orientation involve the correlation of sensory information from many modalities with motor information about ongoing patterns of voluntary and reflexive activation of the body musculature. The vestibular system represents only one of the acceleration-sensitive receptor systems of the body conveying spatial information. Touch- and pressure-dependent receptors, somatosensory and interoceptive, as well as proprioceptive receptors contribute, along with visual and auditory signals specifying relative motion between self and surround. Control of body movement and ori

Salivary secretion and seasickness susceptibility.

The salivary flow rate and composition of 2 groups of 31 subjects, one group at each extreme of the seasickness susceptibility scale, were compared. No significant differences were found between the two groups in flow rates and electrolyte concentrations of whole resting and stimulated saliva. Amylase activity and rate of secretion in resting saliva were significantly higher in subjects susceptible to seasickness as compared with nonsusceptible subjects. Also, the total protein rate of secretion in resting saliva was significantly higher in the susceptible group. The present findings could be

Vestibular and postural findings in the motion sickness syndrome.

The motion sickness syndrome constitutes varying degrees of subjective motion intolerance and three objective findings: hyperactive VOR (79%), hip sway strategy (60%), and positional nystagmus (42%). It is present in subjects who have a strong history of motion sickness. Vestibular rehabilitation appears to help control symptoms. The study also suggests an inheritance pattern, but a structured pedigree could not be constructed. Prospective studies are warranted to further establish the patterns of the motion sickness syndrome.

Re-evaluation of the role of the human endolymphatic sac in Menière's disease.

The role of endolymphatic sac (ES) dysfunction in the etiopathogenesis of Meniere's disease has remained controversial since the early 1900s. The first reports of the ultrastructural (transmission electron microscopy, TEM) pathology of the human ES in Meniere's disease have been published only in the last decade. These studies have been based on biopsies of the extraosseous (intradural) ES and in no cases has the TEM appearance of the intraosseous ES been described. Likewise the control material used has been from biopsies of extraosseous ES taken from patients with acoustic schwannomas. To da

Changes in auditory evoked brain potentials during ultra-low frequency whole-body vibration of man or of his visual surround.

Auditory evoked brain potentials (AEP) were recorded from nine healthy male subjects during three types of condition: A - subject and visual field stationary; B - subject vibrated (z-axis, 0.6 Hz, 1.85 ms-2 rms), visual field stationary; C - subject stationary, visual field vibrated (as for B). The visual surround was confined to a checkerboard pattern in front of the subject. Auditory stimuli (1000 Hz, 86 dB, interstimulus interval 7 s) were delivered via headphones to evoke AEP. Vibration-synchronous activity in the EEG was eliminated by a subtraction technique. In comparison with condition

Vestibulo-ocular and vestibulo-spinal reflexes in evaluation of vestibular lesions.

In order to evaluate to what extent different diseases causing vertigo can be detected by studying vestibulo-spinal and vestibulo-ocular reflexes, 146 patients were examined. The diagnosis classes were: periodical attacks, position induced attacks, vestibular neuronitis, brain concussion, cerebrovascular disorders and acoustic neurinoma. Dynamic posturography was performed on all the patients, standard bithermal caloric test on 129 and voluntary saccades on 127 patients. The proportion of pathological test results in posturography exceeded that in the caloric test in all but one diagnosis clas

[Otoneurological symptomatology in tumors of the hypophysis with marked extrasellar growth].

Otoneurological examination with the use of modern methods (electronystagmography, electrogustometry, supraliminal cupulometry, audiometry) showed that some type of disorders are encountered in 100% of cases of tumors of the hypophysis with marked extrasellar growth (vestibular disorders in 94% of cases, disturbed sensitivity in the nasal cavity in 55%, disorders of hearing and the sense of taste in 18%, disorders of the sense of smell in 17%). The otoneurological symptoms yield additional information on the direction of the tumor growth and, what is most important, on the degree of its effect

A revised analysis of the role of efference in motion perception.

The analysis of motion perception historically has included efferent as well as afferent mechanisms to account for the perception of motion during eye movement. The application of efferent mechanisms to motion perception has been limited, however, by several illusions which are apparently inconsistent with the notion that oculomotor mechanisms contribute to motion perception. An alternative account is presented of the manner in which efference may contribute to the perception of motion. It is proposed that distinct smooth eye-movement systems contribute differentially to object motion percepti

Abnormalities of the vestibulo-ocular response in congenital esotropia.

In 32 infants with congenital esotropia, I measured the vestibuloocular response. The eight patients with nystagmus compensation syndrome exhibited brisk responses. Fourteen of the 24 who had estropia without nystagmus had severely diminished responses and the other ten had moderate responses. Vestibulo-ocular testing is useful in detecting subtle forms of nystagmus compensation syndrome, especially in young infants, in whom thorough examination of ductions and versions is difficult. Dysfunction of the vestibular system is not necessarily a primary cause of congenital estropia, but brain-stem

Vascular mechanisms in Meniere's disease. Theoretical considerations.

Unimpeded venous drainage of the vestibular organs via the paravestibular canaliculus (PVC) vein is crucial to inner ear fluid mechanisms. With increased venous pressure, insufficient drainage may result in endolymphatic hydrops, unless collateral veins develop. Different mechanisms cause venous insufficiency in different cases of Meniere's. One suggested mechanism is alteration of the intermediate endolymphatic sac (IES) microcirculation with decreased regulation of blood held within subepithelial capillaries of the sac. Increased blood may thus drain into the veins, with increased venous pre

Vestibular findings in 25 patients with Waardenburg's syndrome.

Vestibular pathology does not seem to occur more frequently in patients with Waardenburg's syndrome than in those suffering from other types of congenital deafness. This was concluded from the results of vestibular examination by means of electronystagmography of 25 subjects with Waardenburg's syndrome from five families in the Netherlands. Ten of these subjects had a hearing loss, four of them bilateral and six unilateral. A review of the literature concerning more than 1,000 cases with Waardenburg's syndrome shows that in only 26 deaf patients was a very simple vestibular examination perform

Temporal bone histopathology in experimental hypovitaminosis A.

Twenty-five years ago hearing loss was observed in some subjects during a comprehensive study of the effects of hypovitaminosis A on human volunteers. Experimental studies documenting histopathological changes in the temporal bone due to hypovitaminosis A are conflicting. Even the recent textbooks of otolaryngology and physiology make no mention of a role of vitamin A in the ear. To explore the role of vitamin A in the ear adult and weanling rats maintained on a diet totally lacking vitamin A were sacrificed at intervals. Their temporal bones were examined with the light microscope. After six

[Is there a correlation between vestibular and cochlear hypofunction in Menière's disease? (author's transl)].

The vestibular findings in Meniere's disease show large variations. In the attack-free interval, with strict unilateral disease, very often there seems to be a vestibular hypoexcitability. This canal paresis is mostly manifesting itself by a reduction of the velocity of the slow phase, and not so much by the shortening of the duration of a calorically induced nystagmus. With vestibular end-organ-diseases the relative hypoexcitability is most pronounced with strong cold stimuli. The correlation between hearing loss and vestibular function loss of 16 Meniere patients was examined at different ca
