Indoor air quality of 5,000 households and its determinants. Part B: Volatile organic compounds and inorganic gaseous pollutants in the Japan Environment and Children's study.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are major indoor air pollutants. Quantification of indoor concentrations of VOCs and identification of factors associated with these concentrations can help manage indoor air quality. This study measured the concentrations of VOCs and inorganic gaseous pollutants in around 5000 households in Japan and utilised a random forest model to estimate these concentrations and identify important determinants. The homes of 5017 randomly selected participants in the Japan Environment and Children's Study (JECS) were visited twice, when the children were aged 1.5 and 3 ye…

Distribution of volatile organic compounds in Sicilian groundwaters analysed by head space-solid phase micro extraction coupled with gas chromatography mass spectrometry (SPME/GC/MS).

This work presents the results of an assessment of the existence and concentration of 13 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in groundwaters from 14 hydrological basins in Sicily (25,710km (2)). On the basis of hydrological, hydrogeochemical and geological studies, 324 sampling points were selected. All groundwater sampled were collected twice, from October to December 2004 and from February to May 2005, and were analysed to determine the concentration and spatial distribution of the VOCs in the aquifers. The need to analyze a large number of samples in a short space of time so as to obtain quan…

Monitoring volatile organic compound emissions from Tasmanian engineered wood products using static headspace SPME-GC-MS.

This study presents, for the first time, a quantitative S-HS-SPME-GC-MS approach for long-term monitoring of VOC emissions from Tasmanian-manufactured glued-laminated timber, produced using Eucalyptus nitens and Picea abies, enabling temporal emission profiling of 18 target VOCs. Key SPME extraction, chromatographic separation, and MS detection parameters were optimised, resulting in a selective and sensitive analytical method. The method achieved LODs of 0.002 - 0.024 mg m-3 for all target analytes, with intra- and inter-day repeatability below 10% and 20%, respectively. VOC concentrations we

Volatile organic compound profiles in oat are shaped by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, barley yellow dwarf virus and soil herbicide residues.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are emitted by plants and vary in quantity and composition depending on biotic and abiotic environmental conditions. Plant-emitted VOCs are altered by attacking herbivores and pathogens, and have been increasingly found to be fine-tuned by microbial associates and environmental pollutants. Here, we studied whether arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) treatment, barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV) infection, and soil pollution with glyphosate-based herbicide (GBH) residues affect the emission of volatile organic compounds by oat (Avena sativa) plants. Oat plants wer…

Exploring the association between volatile organic compound exposure and chronic kidney disease: evidence from explainable machine learning methods.

BACKGROUND: Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) affects approximately 697.5 million people worldwide. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are emerging as potential risk factors, but their complex relationships with CKD may be underestimated by traditional linear methods. This study explores the association between urinary VOC metabolites and CKD risk using a combination of epidemiological and interpretable machine learning approaches. METHODS: Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2011-March 2020 pre-pandemic) were analyzed to examine 15 urinary VOC metabolites. Analytical me…

Volatile Organic Compound Profiling of Commercial Poi Products in Fresh and Aged States Using Comprehensive Two-Dimensional Gas Chromatography.

Taro (Colocasia esculenta L.) is a plant originating from Southeast Asia now prevalent throughout the Pacific Islands. Growing taro was and remains an important facet of the Hawaiian culture. Poi is a food product prepared from steamed taro that has been macerated and allowed to ferment. While poi is commonly prepared at home, it can also be found commercially from select Hawaiian brands. The general fermentation process of poi produces volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, organic acids, esters, and heterocycles, among others, through microbial and enzymatic …

Microwave-Assisted Hydrothermal Synthesis of {100} and {111} Faceted LiFeO2 Truncated Octahedra: Investigations on Volatile Organic Compound Sensing Performance.

Growth of exposed crystal facets has received considerable attention because of their coordinatively unsaturated surface atoms and defect-related surface reactivities. Herein, LiFeO2 truncated octahedra exposed with 6 {100} facets and 8 {111} facets were prepared through a simple microwave-assisted hydrothermal method without using any additives, surfactants, and calcination processes. The detailed growth process revealed that the formation of LiFeO2 truncated octahedra occurred only at the optimized reaction temperature (180 °C), time (30 min), and reactant concentrations. The prepared LiFeO2

Volatile organic compound detection of Buruli ulcer disease: Headspace analysis of Mycobacterium ulcerans and used gauzes of Buruli-compatible ulcers.

Diagnosing Buruli ulcer (BU) is complicated by limited access to the sensitive IS2404 qPCR. Experienced clinicians report a distinct odour of Buruli ulcers. We explored the potential of headspace analysis by thermal desorption-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry to detect volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from Mycobacterium ulcerans both in vitro and clinically. This study was conducted in two phases: a discovery and validation phase. During the discovery phase, VOCs that enable identification of M. ulcerans cultures were determined. During the validation phase, these VOCs were evaluated in c…

Aldehyde and Volatile Organic Compound Yields in Commercial Cigarette Mainstream Smoke Are Mutually Related and Depend on the Sugar and Humectant Content in Tobacco.

INTRODUCTION: The World Health Organization (WHO) Framework Convention on Tobacco control recognizes the need for tobacco product regulation. In line with that, the WHO Study Group on Tobacco Product Regulation (TobReg) proposed to regulate nine toxicants in mainstream cigarette smoke, including aldehydes, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and carbon monoxide (CO). We analyzed their relations in 50 commercially available cigarette brands, using two different smoking regimes, and their dependence on sugar and humectant concentrations in tobacco filler. METHODS: We measured sugar and humectant…

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in femoral muscle from forensic autopsy cases: exploring potential indicators of postmortem ethanol production: Part I - comprehensive profiling of postmortem generated VOCs.

PURPOSE: In postmortem ethanol analysis in decomposed cases, simultaneously detected volatile organic compounds (VOCs) serve as indicators of postmortem ethanol production. Among these, 1‑propanol is the most widely used marker; however, it is sometimes absent even in markedly decomposed bodies, thus making interpretation difficult. This study aimed to comprehensively detect postmortem VOCs in femoral muscle samples collected at autopsy and to re-evaluate indicators of postmortem ethanol production. METHODS: Among consecutive autopsy cases from a single institution, those involving antemortem…

Operational parameters regulate in-situ emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and greenhouse gases (GHGs) during kitchen waste composting: Linking functional microbial dynamics to emission mitigation.

Emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and greenhouse gases (GHGs) from kitchen waste composting plants causes significant environmental issues. This paper characterized the emission profiles of VOCs and GHGs from KW composting with different operating parameters. Quantitative results showed that emission intensities spanned 7.4-folds (VOCs: 196-1456 μg·m-3) to 8.2-folds (GHGs: 79-647 mg·m-3) between C1 (R1M1A1) and C9 (R3M2A3). Seven categories of VOCs were identified, with the 'Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene and Xylene' (BTEX) group as the most abundant chemical family. Most VOCs (exc…

Gas Chromatography - Ion Mobility Spectrometry as a tool for quick detection of hazardous volatile organic compounds in indoor and ambient air: A university campus case study.

Society's concerns about the citizens' exposure to possibly dangerous environments have recently risen; nevertheless, the assessment of indoor air quality still represents a major contemporary challenge. The volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are among the main factors responsible for deteriorating air quality conditions. These analytes are very common in daily-use environments and they can be extremely hazardous to human health, even at trace concentrations levels. For these reasons, their quick detection, identification, and quantification are crucial tasks, especially for indoor and heavily-…
