Human-centered digital ecosystem: safeguarding healthcare workers' sleep, ergonomics, and occupational health.

Using Healthcare-Associated Infection (HCAI) surveillance as a representative model for high-burden administrative tasks, this Perspective argues that healthcare worker fatigue, sleep disruption, and poorly integrated digital systems threaten both occupational health and health-system resilience. Crucially, these problems should be addressed as failures of work-system design rather than deficits in individual resilience. We propose a Human-Centered Digital Ecosystem that places adequate staffing, circadian-aligned scheduling, protected recovery, and supportive organizational conditions before

Sleep patterns of shiftworkers.

Work hours affect sleep because the sleep behavior of people on nonworkdays differs from that on workdays. For most workers, workday sleep is shorter than nonworkday sleep. On nonworkdays most workers sleep at night. Work schedule interacts with the effects of work hours on workday sleep. On workdays, people on the nightshift sleep the least, people on the afternoon/evening shift sleep the most, and people on the dayshift sleep less than those on the afternoon/evening shift but more than those on the nightshift. Thus, the infradian sleep strategy elected by a shiftworker is ordinarily related

Navigating crisis: a qualitative exploration of medical social workers' responses to ethical issues during COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: Medical social workers' (MedSWs) roles and responsibilities expanded during the COVID-19 pandemic. They experienced larger caseloads, restrictive protocols, new policies, and work outside of their professional scope, despite limited access to resources, support, or hazard compensation. As a result, MedSWs faced complex ethical situations, which they had to address in accordance with the profession's guiding principles. METHODS: We conducted qualitative semi-structured interviews with 54 MedSWs about their professional experiences during the pandemic and used the National Associati

Silica-associated lung disease in developing countries.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: There is a considerable burden of silica-associated lung diseases in the developing world. This review summarizes the epidemiology of these diseases, especially silicosis and silico-tuberculosis, mitigative efforts and treatment, especially in the context of developing countries. RECENT FINDINGS: In 2017, the highest incidence of silicosis was in China, India and Brazil among the developing countries. The prevalence of silicosis amongst exposed workers may vary from 4 to 55%; there is a risk of underestimation because of the 'healthy worker effect'. The permissible exposure

Experience with a medicolegal decision-making system for occupational hearing loss-related tinnitus.

Owing to an increasing number of requests for compensation, a medicolegal decision-making system for tinnitus related to noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) has been elaborated at the Federal Belgian Institute of Occupational Diseases. Experience with 113 patients, all of them claiming compensation for NIHL and tinnitus, is now available. The patients underwent an exhaustive audiological investigation, and their professional career and noise exposure were carefully and objectively documented. We reviewed the group of 35 "Принято" cases (i.e., with chronic tinnitus recognized as related to NIHL

The prognosis of occupational asthma due to detergent enzymes: clinical, immunological and employment outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the prognosis of occupational asthma induced by high molecular weight proteins. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to measure the clinical, immunological and employment outcomes of individuals with occupational asthma induced by detergent enzymes. METHODS: We undertook a workforce-based follow-up study in 35 (78%) of the 45 ex-employees from a single factory with occupational asthma. In each case the diagnosis was supported by evidence of specific sensitization and characteristic changes in peak flow or a positive response to specific bronchial provocation testing

Carpal tunnel surgery: patient preferences and predictors for satisfaction.

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a debilitating disease of the upper extremity affecting patient function and quality of life. Surgical interventions have been developed that effectively treat this disease. However, there remains a subset of patients who are not fully satisfied with their outcome. Extensive investigation has been undertaken to analyze preoperative factors predictive of higher patient satisfaction. This review summarizes the role of unique patient characteristics and patient psychology, worker's compensation, patient demographics, certain clinical features, and patient preferences and

Limited intertarsal arthrodesis using bone grafting and pin fixation.

Iliac crest bone grafting and K wire fixation was used to fuse the arthritic intertarsal articulations of sixteen patients with post-traumatic or primary degenerative disease. Using pre- and post-operative AOFAS scores, foot function indices (FFI), and a subjective scoring system, functional and subjective outcome was critically evaluated. The AOFAS score improved an average of 41 points, the FFI decreased from 64 to 24, and 81 percent of patients rated their results as good or excellent. Fusion of the 4th and 5th TMT joints was associated with significantly poorer functional scores, and peopl

Accidental occupational exposure of intravenous nurses to human immunodeficiency virus. Anticipating the consequences.

This descriptive study randomly surveyed all 302 Massachusetts members of the Intravenous Nurses Society in 1991 regarding their perceptions of nine possible consequences of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection caused by accidental occupational exposure. Areas of highest concern were financial: adequacy of worker's compensation, ability of the employer to cover all healthcare costs, and job security. Nurses also were concerned about confidentiality of their HIV status and personal history jeopardizing their benefits. The i.v. nurses felt most secure in areas of their personal lives: ho

Occupational aspects of coccidioidomycosis.

Infections with coccidioides immitis have been frequently associated with circumstances suggesting the likelihood of occupational origin. Some cases have been accepted as compensable by insurance carriers, the Industrial Accident Commission, and the courts. The factors considered in determining whether or not infection is of occupational origin are reviewed under the following headings.1. Laboratory infections.2. Other infections due to exposure to contaminated articles, arising outside endemic areas.3. Infections in employees entering endemic areas pursuant to their occupations.4. Primary cut

Compensation for work-related hematologic, liver, and infectious diseases.

Occupational diseases may be defined only medically or scientifically, and even then, their definition is not simple. However, compensable occupational diseases involve the additional layer of legal systems and social welfare policies as well. Their multifaceted nature makes determining the work-relatedness of these diseases more complex. Korea has established standards for the recognition of occupational diseases in Schedule 5 of the Enforcement Decree of the Labor Standards Act, and specific criteria for the recognition of occupational diseases are listed in Schedule 3 of the Enforcement Dec

Work injuries among drivers in the goods-transport branch in Denmark.

BACKGROUND: Goods-transport drivers in Denmark had an elevated rate of hospital contact due to injury compared with the skilled/semiskilled workforce in general in recent years. There is a need to elucidate the causes of their work injuries. METHODS: We analyzed the Danish National Work Injury Register for the 10-year period 1993-2002. RESULTS: The vast majority (92.6%) of the work injuries among goods-transport were sustained under non-traffic activities, that is, collecting, loading, unloading, and delivering goods. They fell from height (22.3%), suffered from overexertion (14.2%), got cau

[Hand injuries caused by circular saw].

The investigation was carried out on 1199 patients treated for hand injuries in the II Department of Surgery of the Jagiellonian University between years 1987-2000. There were 225 patients injured while working with circular saw. These injuries were much more severe than others (p < 0.001) and patients with these injuries were more often (p < 0.001) admitted to the clinic. The length of total treatment was considerably longer (p < 0.001) and final results--worse than in other patients (p < 0.001)--permanent hand disability was almost three times larger. Disability pension was given to these pa
