BACKGROUND: The development of periodontal diseases has multifactorial causes including genetic factors. Limited investigations have been conducted to explore the association between ABO blood groups and the development and progression of periodontal diseases.

The national reference Center for blood groups checked samples of reagents and devices used in France for a definitive verification of pretransfusion ABO tests performed at the patient's bedside, as defined by French health authority regulations. The results of an initial inquiry was published in 1991. The new study shows no significant improvement of the quality of reagents and devices. This is a major concern considering the importance of ABO incompatibility in severe hemolytic transfusion reactions.

Infectious diseases, especially the worldwide epidemic diseases such as plague, smallpox, syphilis, tuberculosis have to a great extent selective effects. This is demonstrated inter alia in the different "selection values" in the ABO blood group system. Under present day civilized living conditions O carriers have a preservation advantage over blood group A. The deletion of the selection factor "infectious disease", which entails a decline of immunity, may nevertheless regain importance if environmental changes occur.

STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: The incidence and specificity of non-ABO RBC alloantibodies are described in a series of 217 patients undergoing allogeneic HPC transplantation because of various hematologic malignancies.

In the context of limited donor availability and long waiting times for deceased donor transplantation, ABO-incompatible kidney transplantation (ABOiKT) does give a ray of hope for children with kidney failure. BACKGROUND: ABO-incompatible (ABOi) cardiac transplantation is now used widely in infants with isohemagglutinin titers <1:4, but there is increasing evidence that ABOi transplantation can also be used in children with significantly higher titers. We reviewed our high-titer ABOi transplants and report our results here.
