Comparison of Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry and Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis in the Assessment of Body Composition in Women with Anorexia Nervosa upon Admission and Discharge from an Inpatient Specialist Unit.

Assessment of body composition is fundamental in diagnosis and treatment of anorexia nervosa (AN). The gold standard dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is expensive and not universally available. Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is a non-invasive, inexpensive method relative to DXA. We compared DXA and BIA in the assessment of fat-free mass (FFM), fat mass (FM), and body fat percentage (BF%) in women with AN upon admission (ANT1) and discharge (ANT2) from an inpatient specialist unit with a referent healthy control (HC) group. The study population consisted of 31 ANT1, 25 ANT2, and 5

Changes in trabecular bone score and bone density in female adolescents with anorexia nervosa: a longitudinal study.

Impaired bone health is a common complication of anorexia nervosa (AN). We aimed to assess longitudinal changes in bone mineral density (BMD) and trabecular bone score (TBS), a measure of bone quality, in female adolescents with anorexia nervosa (AN). We conducted a retrospective longitudinal study of 41 female adolescents with AN who underwent two dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans. Clinical data, including age, weight, height, body mass index (BMI), and DXA measurements were retrieved from the medical charts. Lumbar bone mineral apparent density (BMAD) was calculated to correct for

Bending Resistance at Hip and Fractures Risk in Postmenopausal Women Independent of Bone Mineral Density.

Several studies suggest that aging loss of bone mass is not necessarily associated with reduced mechanical proprieties as bending resistance. Since postmenopausal women with fracture and without osteoporosis might have an impairment in the bending mechanisms at hip, our aim was to assess if women with and without fractures differ in the femoral parameters of resistance to bending, independent of the bone loss. In this cross-sectional study we enrolled 192 postmenopausal women who underwent X-ray absorptiometry scan to measure bone mineral density as well as cross-sectional geometry parameters

One leg standing time predicts fracture risk in older women independent of clinical risk factors and BMD.

UNLABELLED: In women of ages 75-80 years, a low one leg standing time (OLST) was associated with an increased risk of incident fractures, independently of bone mineral density and clinical risk factors. OLST contributed substantially to fracture probability, indicating that the test should be considered when evaluating fracture risk in older women. INTRODUCTION: Physical function and risk of falls are important risk factors for fracture. A few previous studies have suggested that a one leg standing time (OLST) less than 10 s predicts fracture risk, but the impact of OLST, in addition to known

Experimental testing and biomechanical CT analysis of Chinese cadaveric vertebrae with different modeling approaches.

Osteoporosis is characterized by reduced bone strength predisposing to an increased risk of fracture. Biomechanical computed tomography (BCT), predicting bone strength via CT-based finite element analysis (FEA), is now clinically available in the USA for diagnosing osteoporosis or assessing fracture risk. However, it has not been previously validated using a cohort of only Chinese subjects. Additionally, the effect of various modeling approaches on BCT outcomes remains elusive. To address these issues, we performed DXA and QCT scanning, compression testing, and BCT analyses on thirteen vertebr

Association of total testosterone status with bone mineral density in adults aged 40-60 years.

OBJECTIVE: Evidence linking total testosterone and bone mineral density (BMD) in adults is very limited. According to our review of the literature, only a few reports have focused on the relationship between total testosterone and bone mineral density in adults. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between total testosterone and total bone mineral density in adults aged 40-60 years. METHODS: We used a cross-sectional study of a non-institutionalized U.S. population sample from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. A weighted multivariate linea

Updated bone mineral density status in Saudi patients with inflammatory bowel disease.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) burden and its impact on bone mineral density (BMD) among adult patients in Saudi Arabia. To the best of our knowledge, our study is the only study to give an update about this health problem in adult Saudi patients with IBD. IBD is a great risk factor for reduced BMD due to its associated chronic inflammation, malabsorption, weight loss and medication side effects. Consequently, screening for reduced BMD among patients with IBD is of utmost importance to curb and control anticipated morbidity and mortality among those patients

Trabecular bone score and transilial bone trabecular histomorphometry in type 1 diabetes and healthy controls.

Patients with type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) have an increased risk of fracture. Little is known about the microarchitecture of trabecular bone in T1DM, which may account for some of the increased risk. We report here a secondary analysis comparing Trabecular Bone Score (TBS) derived from DXA to 2-D histomorphometric and 3-D micro-computerized tomography (CT) variables obtained from iliac biopsies in 83 subjects (29 T1DM and 54 controls). The transilial bone biopsy specimens were fixed, embedded and scanned using a desktop micro-CT at 16 μm resolution. They were then sectioned and quantitativ

Lower Trabecular Bone Score and Spine Bone Mineral Density Are Associated With Bone Stress Injuries and Triad Risk Factors in Collegiate Athletes.

INTRODUCTION: Determinants of bone health and injury are important to identify in athletes. Bone mineral density (BMD) is commonly measured in athletes with Female Athlete Triad (Triad) risk factors; the trabecular bone score (TBS) has been proposed to predict fracture risk independent of BMD. Evaluation of TBS and spine BMD in relation bone stress injury (BSI) risk has not been studied in female collegiate athletes. OBJECTIVE: We hypothesized that spine BMD and TBS would each independently predict BSI and that the combined measures would improve injury prediction in female collegiate athlete

Effect of Low-Intensity Vibration on Bone Strength, Microstructure, and Adiposity in Pre-Osteoporotic Postmenopausal Women: A Randomized Placebo-Controlled Trial.

There has been evidence that cyclical mechanical stimulation may be osteogenic, thus providing opportunities for nonpharmacological treatment of degenerative bone disease. Here, we applied this technology to a cohort of postmenopausal women with varying bone mineral density (BMD) T-scores at the total hip (-0.524 ± 0.843) and spine (-0.795 ± 1.03) to examine the response to intervention after 1 year of daily treatment with 10 minutes of vibration therapy in a randomized double-blinded trial. The device operates either in an active mode (30 Hz and 0.3 g) or placebo. Primary endpoints were chang

Role of deteriorated bone quality in the development of osteoporosis in pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma.

CONTEXT: Pheochromocytoma (PHEO) and paraganglioma (PGL) (PHEO and PGL: PPGLs), catecholamine-producing tumors, represent an emerging cause of secondary osteoporosis. However, despite decreased bone mineral density (BMD), vertebral fracture (VF) is not associated with BMD in PPGLs. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether deteriorated bone quality is involved in the development of osteoporosis in PPGLs. PARTICIPANTS: Trabecular bone score (TBS), used to assess trabecular bone quality, was examined in 56 patients with PPGLs and 52 with non-functional adrenal tumors (AT). Radiograph of the spine was car

Exploring the Association Between Emphysema Phenotypes and Low Bone Mineral Density in Smokers with and without COPD.

RATIONALE: Emphysema and osteoporosis are tobacco-related diseases. Many studies have shown that emphysema is a strong and independent predictor of low bone mineral density (BMD) in smokers; however, none of them explored its association with different emphysema subtypes. OBJECTIVE: To explore the association between the different emphysema subtypes and the presence of low bone mineral density in a population of active or former smokers with and without chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). METHODS: One hundred and fifty-three active and former smokers from a pulmonary clinic complet

Use of allometry and skinfold thicknesses to estimate the fat mass of circumpubertal boys.

Background: In the pubertal period, each part of the body grows at different rates. This makes the relationship between the parts nonlinear. Particularly, the fat mass (FM) of boys tends to decrease, further exacerbating the issue of linearity in growth.Aim: To propose predictive models of FM from skinfolds (SF) adjusted allometrically.Subjects and methods: 75 pubertal boys (14.4 ± 0.9 years) composed the sample by self-selected pubic hair. FM was determined by DXA (FMDXA) (kg), stature (cm), body mass (kg) and nine SF (mm) by anthropometric measurements. The SF were individually adjusted allo

Precision of the Hologic DXA in the Assessment of Visceral Adipose Tissue.

INTRODUCTION: Visceral fat, also known as visceral adipose tissue (VAT), has been the focus of intensive research over the past several yr, as ground breaking studies have investigated its possible role in predicting long-term cardiac dysfunction, hypertension, and diabetes. Historically, magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography were the instruments of choice for visceral fat quantification. However, with the introduction of visceral fat assessment software for Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) scanners, DXA's use for VAT assessment has become increasingly common. To effectively
