Adaptive and Maladaptive Behaviours and Their Cognitive Correlates in Aging Adults With Down Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Longer life expectancy in Down syndrome (DS) has shifted concern to age-related declines in everyday functioning. Adaptive and maladaptive behaviours are pivotal to quality of life, yet little is known about their patterns in older adults with DS. METHOD: Data from 259 cognitively stable adults (25-72 year) in the Alzheimer's Biomarkers Consortium-DS were analysed. Adaptive behaviour (Vineland-3) and maladaptive behaviour (Reiss Screen) were analysed and then regressed on age, intellectual disability level, and cognitive tests. RESULTS: Higher age and greater disability predicted

Deep Dive into Evolution: How Cetaceans Adapt Their Anticoagulant Genes for Underwater Survival.

Cetaceans face the risk of thromboembolism due to diving and decompression responses. However, cetaceans maintain normal blood circulation. This study explores the molecular mechanisms cetaceans use to mitigate diving-associated hemostatic challenges during diving. Forty-six species were analyzed, including 18 cetaceans, 9 artiodactyls, and 19 other terrestrial mammals. Thirty-nine anticoagulant genes and proteins were examined, identifying 6 genes (ANXA2, ANXA5, FGA, FGB, PLAUR, and PLG) with conserved evolution, 4 genes (ANXA2, PDGFB, SH2B3, THBS1) with positive selection, and 12 proteins (A

A field experiment assessing the roles of drought, herbivory, and local climate on cyanogenesis cline formation and local adaptation in Trifolium repens.

Projecting how populations will adapt to environmental changes requires a mechanistic understanding of selection imposed by various biotic and abiotic factors. In white clover (Trifolium repens), clines in an antiherbivore defence mechanism, hydrogen cyanide (HCN), form via variation in selection imposed by the environment. However, the specific environmental factors that select for or against chemical defence phenotypes in white clover remain unresolved. We performed a field experiment, including a factorial manipulation of precipitation and herbivory at high and low latitude study sites. The

Whole-genome sequencing reveals adaptive strategies of the Antarctic aquatic bacterium Arthrobacter sp. R5.

Arthrobacter species are widely distributed in cold environments and are recognized for their ability to withstand multiple environmental stressors. Here, we report the whole-genome sequence of Arthrobacter sp. R5, a red-pigmented and UV-resistant bacterium isolated from shallow lake sediments collected at Edmonson Point, Antarctica. Whole-genome sequencing was performed using the Illumina NovaSeq 6000 platform, and the genome was assembled and annotated using the TORMES workflow. The assembled genome comprises 4,145,062 bp with a GC content of 67.78% and contains 3700 predicted coding sequenc

Immune metabolic remodeling during exercise rehabilitation: Linking skeletal muscle regeneration, bone homeostasis, and systemic immune adaptation.

Exercise rehabilitation harnesses immune metabolic remodeling to drive coordinated skeletal muscle regeneration, bone homeostasis, and systemic immune adaptation. Physical activity functions as a controlled metabolic stressor that reprograms immune cell metabolism-shifting macrophages from glycolytic M1 to oxidative M2 phenotypes, expanding regulatory T cells through fatty acid oxidation and ketone body signaling, and modulating neutrophils, NK cells, and B cells via lactate, succinate, itaconate, ROS, NAD⁺, and gut-derived SCFAs. These metabolic shifts regulate immune cell polarization, effer

Research into resistance training response heterogeneity: a summary of the 2025 conference at the University of Jyväskylä.

The Inter-Individual Variation in Resistance Training Response Conference was hosted at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland November 19-21, 2025. This paper summarizes key themes that emerged across lectures and discussions. First, resistance training induces multidimensional adaptations at the tissue, muscle fiber, and ultrastructural levels, including radial muscle fiber hypertrophy through increased myofibril number, longitudinal growth through sarcomere addition throughout the length (not ends) of muscle fibers, and metabolic adaptations that emulate other models of rapid cell growth. Sex-specific placental adaptations associated with fetal growth restriction: a review.

Fetal growth restriction (FGR) is a major obstetric complication linked to placental insufficiency, increasing the risk of perinatal morbidity, mortality, and long-term health issues. The placenta is central to fetal development and maternal-fetal communication; its dysfunction leads to impaired fetal development. Numerous experimental FGR models exist, from rodents to large animals, but most studies, despite changes to some federal funding requirements, have historically overlooked the impact of fetal sex on placental development, function, and adaptation. Recent evidence indicates that male

Adaptation in the Avian Middle Ear-The Columellar Annular Ligament in Aquatic and Diving Birds.

The effective detection of environmental vibrations such as sound waves depends on the transmission of tympanic membrane motion through the middle ear to the inner ear hair cells. In birds, the bony element of the middle ear is the columella; its distal end joins the cartilaginous extracolumella and tympanic membrane, while its basal expansion (the footplate) interfaces with inner ear fluid at the oval window, where it is held in place by the stapedial (columellar) annular ligament. Variation in footplate and oval window geometry can alter the annular ligament's size and shape, thereby influen

Implicit and explicit flexibility are inversely related during perturbed human walking in healthy young adult males.

Effective locomotion depends on the ability to adapt to changing environmental constraints. Flexibility, defined as the ability of the locomotor system to adopt alternative movement solutions to achieve the same task outcome, is widely considered a fundamental property of adaptable movement. Despite its theoretical importance, flexibility in locomotion remains rarely characterized. This study investigated the relationship between implicit flexibility and explicit flexibility during perturbed walking. Healthy young males walked on a treadmill while unexpected unilateral perturbations were intro

Genomic signatures of adaptation across a landscape of crickets following the introduction of a parasitoid fly.

Novel species interactions provide an opportunity to assess the earliest stages of genetic adaptation. We combined population genomics and field selection surveys to explore the genomic and geographic landscape of adaptation in small, fragmented Hawaiian cricket populations, which are parasitized by larvae of an introduced fly that targets singing males. Multiple protective male-silencing cricket morphs have recently spread under this novel selection pressure, despite song's important roles in mate attraction. We find evidence of sharp declines in cricket effective population sizes following t

When rehabilitation is not enough, how targeting metabolism can overcome the limited plasticity of skeletal muscle after traumatic injury.

There is a category of large-scale neuromusculoskeletal injuries that result in long-term functional disabilities, and one such injury is volumetric muscle loss (VML) injury. In addition to the clinical outcomes related to long-term dysfunction, co-morbidities and reduced mobility and physical activity, this review addresses several underexplored physiological limitations of VML at both the whole-body level and within the injured muscle. Our objectives with this review are to provide: (1) critical understanding of the pathophysiological limitations related to VML injury; (2) evidence for emerg

Exploring genetic adaptation and microbial dynamics in engineered anaerobic ecosystems via strain-level metagenomics.

Genetic heterogeneity exists within all microbial populations, with sympatric cells of the same species often exhibiting single-nucleotide variations that influence phenotypic traits, including metabolic efficiency. However, the evolutionary dynamics of these strain-level differences in response to environmental stress remain poorly understood. Here, we present a first-of-its-kind study tracking the adaptive evolution of an anaerobic, carbon-fixing microbiota under a controlled engineered ecosystem focused on carbon dioxide bioconversion into methane. Leveraging strain-resolved metagenomics wi

Only skull-deep? Headbutting adaptations may not extend to the brain cavity.

High-impact headbutting behavior makes the muskox (Ovibos moschatus) a charismatic species. While many theorize how these headbutting bovids might protect their brain during such encounters, few have investigated their claims anatomically. We investigated the anatomical function of digitiform impressions in the bovid brain cavity and their relationship to headbutting. This work is divided into two parts. First, we provide an anatomical description of the muskox brain cavity for the first time in literature. We used computed tomography (CT) scans of adult and juvenile muskoxen skulls and scans

The Dual Nature of Sinoatrial Node Remodelling in Athletes: A Systematic Review of Electrophysiological Adaptations and the Pathological Tipping Point.

The "athlete's heart" phenotype, featuring resting bradycardia, has traditionally been viewed as a benign adaptation. However, emerging evidence associates prolonged, high-intensity endurance training with an increased risk of clinical sinoatrial node dysfunction. This systematic review synthesizes evidence on exercise-induced intrinsic Sinoatrial Node (SAN) electrophysiological remodelling and evaluates its dual nature along the adaptation-pathology continuum. Following PRISMA guidelines, a systematic search of PubMed, Web of Science, and Google Scholar (2000-2025) identified 17 eligible stud

Genome of the enigmatic watering-pot shell and morphological adaptations for anchoring in sediment.

BACKGROUND: In this study, we present the first chromosome-scale genome of Verpa penis (Linnaeus, 1758), and the first for the bivalve clade Anomalodesmata. The present study has two separate foci. Primarily, we provide the genetic resource to bridge further studies from genome to phenome and propose hypotheses to guide future empirical investigations. Secondarily, based on morphology, we outline a conceptual exploration to address their adaptation. Watering-pot shells have been called "the weirdest bivalves" for their fused tubular shell resembling the spout of a watering can. This adventitio

Development of convergent adaptations reveal highly conserved early ontogenetic skull shape in fishes with amphibious vision.

The development of skeletal elements in fish is strongly influenced by the functional demands and environmental constraints they face during different life stages but mostly occurs during their larval development. One example of late modifications within the skeletal system is the adaptation of the skull and eye morphology that allows for amphibious vision in the four-eyed fishes Anableps spp. Another species that is equally capable of simultaneous aquatic and aerial vision, Rhinomugil corsula, has been widely neglected in this field of research, although it presents great opportunities for co

Global impact of micronutrients in modern human evolution.

Micronutrients are essential components of the human diet, but dietary levels above or below their narrow, recommended range are harmful. Deficiencies increase the risk of stunted growth and metabolic, infectious, and respiratory disorders, and have likely been pervasive in human history, as local soils poor in micronutrients are widespread. Deficiencies are also common today, affecting approximately 2 billion people. Limited evidence exists for selenium, zinc, iodine, and iron deficiencies driving local adaptation in a few human populations, but the broader potential role of micronutrients in

Essential redundancies fuel Mycobacterium tuberculosis adaptation to the host.

Redundancy in biology is, at a glance, counterintuitive because if the function of two gene products completely overlaps then, throughout the course of evolution, one of the genes will likely accumulate mutations to the point of loss-of-function. The consensus is that partial functional overlap, for example, divergent secondary functions, play a major role in redundancy conservation. This asymmetrical nature offers a crucial advantage: phenotypic plasticity, which ensures that an essential cellular function can adapt to changes in the environment. In this context, the human pathogen Mycobacter

Maternal physical activity in healthy pregnancy: Effect on fetal oxygen supply.

AIM: We review evidence for effects of physical activity before and during gestation on the course of pregnancy and ask if there are circumstances where physical activity can stress the fetus due to competition for oxygen and energy substrates. RESULTS: We first summarize physiological responses to exercise in nonpregnant people and known physiological adaptations to pregnancy. Comparing the two, we conclude that physical activity prior to and continuing during gestation is beneficial to pregnancy outcome. The effect of starting an exercise regimen during pregnancy is less easy to assess as f

Digest: The importance of genetic background in bacterial evolution.

How does genetic background influence a population's evolutionary response to an environmental change? Which traits are selected for and how quickly does the population adapt? Filipow et al. (2024) address these questions by exploiting the natural genetic variation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a bacterium often found in the lungs of cystic fibrosis patients. They find that while genetic background influences the rate of phenotypic evolution, it does not alter the evolutionary outcome. Their findings contribute to a growing body of work that connects genetic background to future evolvability.
