Imaging decision about whether to benefit self by harming others: Adolescents with conduct and substance problems, with or without callous-unemotionality, or developing typically.

We sought to identify brain activation differences in conduct-problem youth with limited prosocial emotions (LPE) compared to conduct-problem youth without LPE and community adolescents, and to test associations between brain activation and severity of callous-unemotional traits. We utilized a novel task, which asks subjects to repeatedly decide whether to accept offers where they will benefit but a beneficent other will be harmed. Behavior on this task has been previously associated with levels of prosocial emotions and severity of callous-unemotional traits, and is related to empathic concer

The Gilles de la Tourette Syndrome-Quality of Life Scale for children and adolescents (C&A-GTS-QOL): development and validation of the Italian version.

BACKGROUND: Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS) is a chronic childhood-onset neuropsychiatric disorder with a significant impact on patients' health-related quality of life (HR-QOL). Cavanna et al. (Neurology 2008; 71: 1410-1416) developed and validated the first disease-specific HR-QOL assessment tool for adults with GTS (Gilles de la Tourette Syndrome-Quality of Life Scale, GTS-QOL). This paper presents the translation, adaptation and validation of the GTS-QOL for young Italian patients with GTS. METHODS: A three-stage process involving 75 patients with GTS recruited through three Departme

Development of sex differences in depressive and co-occurring anxious symptoms during adolescence: descriptive trajectories and potential explanations in a multiwave prospective study.

This study investigated psychosocial mechanisms that may account for sex differences in internalizing symptoms of depression and anxiety during adolescence using data from a prospective, multiwave study with a sample of early and middle adolescents (N = 350, 6th to 10th graders; 57% female). Girls showed higher initial levels of only depressive symptoms, not anxious arousal, and increasing trajectories of depressive and anxious arousal symptoms over time compared with boys after controlling for age. Initial levels of depressive symptoms were mediated by a Rumination x Stressors interaction as

Adrenocortical activity in at-risk and normally developing adolescents: individual differences in salivary cortisol basal levels, diurnal variation, and responses to social challenges.

The purpose of this study was to examine adrenocortical activity (basal, diurnal variation, and responses to social stressors) in adolescents at risk for psychopathology. Salivary cortisol levels were examined in normally developing and at-risk youth with internalizing and externalizing symptoms ranging from subclinical to clinical levels. Adolescents showed expected patterns of diurnal variation, with high early morning cortisol levels and a pattern of decline throughout the day. Females showed higher midday and late afternoon levels than males, and these patterns interacted with risk status.

Plasma insulin response to arginine stimulation in children and adolescents with constitutional short stature according to sex, age, sexual development and skinfold thickness.

The plasma insulin response to a standard arginine stimulation test was studied in 247 children and adolescents (177 males and 70 females) with constitutional growth retardation as compared with the response obtained in a matched group of 42 normal subjects and a group of 57 obese subjects. When the insulin response was related to pubertal ratings in the children and adolescents with growth retardation, it was found that the mean fasting levels and mean peak response both rose with the progression of puberty. This tendency was more pronounced in the females. When the insulin response was relat

Project Last Mile and the development of the Girl Champ brand in eSwatini: engaging the private sector to promote uptake of health services among adolescent girls and young women.

In eSwatini and across sub-Saharan Africa, adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) are at significantly higher risk of HIV infection and poorer sexual and reproductive health (SRH) than their male counterparts. AGYW demonstrate low demand for SRH services, further contributing to poor outcomes. Strategic marketing approaches, including those used by multinational corporations, have potential to support demand creation for SRH services among AGYW, but there is limited empirical evidence on the direct application of private-sector strategic marketing approaches in this context. Therefore, we exa

Do the Anti-Müllerian Hormone Levels of Adolescents with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, Those Who Are at Risk for Developing Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, and Those Who Exhibit Isolated Oligomenorrhea Differ from Those of Adolescents with Normal Menstrual Cycles?

BACKGROUND/AIMS: We aimed to investigate whether the anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) levels in adolescents with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), PCOS risk, and isolated oligomenorrhea (OM) were different than in adolescents with a normal/regular menstrual cycle (NMC). METHODS: The diagnosis of PCOS was based on the 2012 Amsterdam [European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology/American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ESHRE/ASRM)] criteria. The PCOS group consisted of cases meeting 3 diagnostic criteria (n = 21), and the PCOS risk group was the 'at risk' group meeting 2 diagnostic crit

Development and preliminary evaluation of a group adaptation of the Unified Protocol for Transdiagnostic Treatment of Emotional Disorders in adolescents (UP-A) in a Spanish public mental health center.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety and depression frequently co-occur during adolescence. The Unified Protocol for Transdiagnostic Treatment of Emotional Disorders in Adolescents (UP-A) targets shared emotional mechanisms and has shown promise in individual formats. This study adapted the UP-A to a group format and evaluated its feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary effectiveness in a public outpatient mental health setting in Spain. METHODS: Thirty-one adolescents (M = 14.03; 87.1% female) participated in a 16-session group intervention, which included 3 group sessions for parents. RESULTS: A total

Flow in screen-based gamified virtual reality sports: development and validation of a behaviorally anchored proxy rating scale for adolescents with autism spectrum disorder.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) face substantial barriers to physical activity participation because of motor coordination difficulties, sensory hypersensitivity, and motivational challenges. Screen-based gamified virtual reality (VR) sports have emerged as a promising alternative, with flow identified as a key psychological mechanism underlying their effects. However, alexithymia and atypical interoceptive processing in adolescents with ASD render conventional self-report flow scales inappropriate for this population. This study aimed to develop and validate a beha

Development of a model for measuring sagittal plane parameters in 10-18-year old adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis based on RTMpose deep learning technology.

PURPOSE: The study aimed to develop a deep learning model for rapid, automated measurement of full-spine X-rays in adolescents with Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS). A significant challenge in this field is the time-consuming nature of manual measurements and the inter-individual variability in these measurements. To address these challenges, we utilized RTMpose deep learning technology to automate the process. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective multicenter diagnostic study using 560 full-spine sagittal plane X-ray images from five hospitals in Inner Mongolia. The model was trained an

"A place where I have lost and made friends": A photovoice study on adolescents' perspectives on health in a new residential development area in Munich, Germany.

Worldwide, the number and proportion of people living in cities continue to grow. Building new districts creates opportunities for designing urban environments that promote the health of their residents from the get-go. In this study, we used the photovoice methodology to explore the perspectives of adolescents on health and well-being in a new urban development area in Munich, Germany. Eleven adolescents aged 13-19 years were recruited in the new residential development area of Freiham on the Southwestern outskirts of Munich. Participants were given ten days to take photographs in the study a

Emotional and behavioral problems change the development of cerebellar gray matter volume, thickness, and surface area from childhood to adolescence: A longitudinal cohort study.

AIMS: Increasing evidence indicates that major neurodevelopmental disorders have potential links to abnormal cerebellar development. However, the developmental trajectories of cerebellar subregions from childhood to adolescence are lacking, and it is not clear how emotional and behavioral problems affect them. We aim to map the developmental trajectories of gray matter volume (GMV), cortical thickness (CT), and surface area (SA) in cerebellar subregions from childhood to adolescence and examine how emotional and behavioral problems change the cerebellar development trajectory in a longitudinal

Transforming narratives into educational tools: the collaborative development of a transformative learning tool based on Nicaraguan adolescents' creative writing about intimate partner violence.

The use of narrative has become increasingly popular in the public health, community development, and education fields. Via emotionally engaging plotlines with authentic, captivating characters, stories provide an opportunity for participants to be carried away imaginatively into the characters' world while connecting the story with their own lived experiences. Stories have been highlighted as valuable tools in transformative learning. However, little published literature exists demonstrating applications of stories in group-based transformative learning curricula. This paper describes the cre
