Minimally traumatic extraction of fractured bilateral maxillary canine teeth using a piezoelectric surgical unit in an African lion (Panthera leo).

IMPORTANCE: Canine extraction of large carnivores can pose significant risk due to extensive tissue damage during aggressive bone reduction. This report highlights a rare instance in which the use of a piezoelectric surgical unit (PSU) for maxillary canine extraction in a large carnivore resulted in successful outcomes with minimal tissue damage. CASE PRESENTATION: A 10-year-old male African lion presented with decreased appetite because of bilateral maxillary canine fractures. Intraoral radiographs revealed enlarged root canals and periapical radiolucency of the fractured canines, leading to

Transcriptome analysis of Porphyromonas gingivalis and Acinetobacter baumannii in polymicrobial communities.

Acinetobacter baumannii is a nosocomial, opportunistic pathogen that causes several serious conditions including meningitis, septicemia, endocarditis, and pneumonia. It can be found in the oral biofilm, which may be a reservoir for pneumonia and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Subgingival colonization by A. baumannii is associated with chronic and aggressive periodontitis as well as refractory periodontal disease. Porphyromonas gingivalis, a keystone periodontal pathogen localized to subgingival plaque, is also implicated in several chronic conditions including aspiration pneumonia. Alt…

Mapping the Oral Microbiome's Role in Periodontal Disease Progression: A Systematic Review.

Periodontal disease is an inflammatory condition characterized by progressive destruction of the tooth-supporting tissues and a shift from a symbiotic to a dysbiotic oral microbial community, rather than by a single pathogen. This review aimed to synthesize current evidence on how alterations in microbial composition, community structure, and functional activity contribute to periodontal disease severity and progression. A comprehensive literature search across four databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and Embase) was conducted. Studies were included if they were peer-reviewed, h

Periodontal conditions in Williams Beuren syndrome: a series of 8 cases.

BACKGROUND: Williams Beuren syndrome (WBS) is an unusual hereditary connective tissue disease caused by a microdeletion at position 7q11-23 and a haploinsufficiency at the elastin gene. The most frequent specific features are elf-like face, alteration of cognitive functions and cardiovascular diseases including isolated supravalvular aortic stenosis. A number of clinical findings have been reported, but none of the studies evaluating this syndrome consider the oral cavity. It is equally surprising that the gingival tissue, which carries a perfectly structured elastic fibre network, has not yet

Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans Cytolethal Distending Toxin-Induces Cell Cycle Arrest in a Glycogen Synthase Kinase (GSK)-3-Dependent Manner in Oral Keratinocytes.

Cytolethal distending toxins (Cdt) are produced by a diverse group of pathogens. One Cdt-producing organism, Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, plays a critical role in the pathogenesis of a unique form of periodontitis, formerly referred to as localized aggressive periodontitis. The active Cdt subunit, CdtB, is a potent phosphatidylinositol (PI) 3,4,5-triphosphate phosphatase capable of inducing PI-3-kinase signaling blockade, a requisite for Cdt-induced toxicity in lymphocytes. In this study, we extended our observations to include the oral keratinocyte response to AaCdt using cell lines…

Differential diagnosis of apical periodontitis and nasopalatine duct cyst.

INTRODUCTION: An accurate differential diagnosis of apical periodontitis (AP) and nasopalatine duct cyst (NPDC) should be established to define the best treatment for endodontically treated maxillary anterior teeth with apical periodontitis. Three-dimensional cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images help to plan treatment and to define an initial diagnostic hypothesis. However, endodontic treatment or retreatment may be unnecessarily prescribed when radiographs show a superimposition of the incisor foramen over the apex of maxillary central incisors, mimicking AP. Diseases of nonendodontic

Active cytomegalovirus infection in human periodontitis.

This study used the reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction method to determine mRNA transcription of subgingival human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) in six adult and three localized juvenile periodontitis patients. The oligonucleotide primers targeted the major capsid protein gene to determine active HCMV infection. HCMV major capsid protein transcript was detected in deep periodontal pockets of two adult and two localized juvenile periodontitis patients but not in any shallow periodontal sites. The findings suggest that active HCMV replication can occur in periodontal sites. Further studies

HLA A9 and B15 are associated with the generalized form, but not the localized form, of early-onset periodontal diseases.

HLA proteins are genetically determined, and account in part for individual immune response. Several studies have been performed seeking an association between HLA antigens and various forms of periodontitis with no conclusive results. The aim of the present study was to determine the frequency of HLA antigens of patients suffering from the localized (LJP) and the generalized (SGP) forms of early-onset periodontitis (EOP). Twenty-six EOP patients from the same ethnic group were studied in comparison to 113 race-matched controls. The EOP group included 11 LJP and 15 SGP patients. HLA-A9 and B15

Artificial Intelligence in Dental Practice: Current Trends and Future Perspectives.

The significance of artificial intelligence (AI) in several facets of dental care is highlighted in this paper. These days, AI is becoming more widely accepted and significant in many industries, notably in dentistry. The development of Chat Generative Pre-training Transformer shows how far AI has already come in a relatively brief span of time, especially when we take into account that John McCarthy initially created this field of computer-aided training in 1956. AI has been demonstrated to have a variety of applications in dentistry. AI is being used in a variety of fields, including endodon

Antibiotic resistance: a "dark side" of biofilm‑associated chronic infections.

Bacteria may exist in nature in a planktonic form or in biofilms that allow bacteria to survive in an unfriendly microenvironment. Biofilm is a structured community of bacteria hidden in a self-produced polymeric matrix of polysaccharides, proteins, and extracellular DNA. Biofilm-growing bacteria cause chronic infections, which are characterized by persisting inflammation and tissue damage (chronic rhinosinusitis, chronic wounds, periodontal diseases). Importantly, some bacteria of human microbiome, when growing in a biofilm (e.g., Porphyromonas gingivalis in dental plaque), can become destruc
