In this study, the development of the Posttraumatic Avoidance Behaviour Questionnaire (PABQ) is described and validated in 437 participants; PTSD patients (N = 75), clinical controls (patients with panic disorder with agoraphobia; PDA) (N = 50), and non-clinical traumatized controls (N = 312). Item reduction and exploratory factor analyses yielded 25 items reflecting seven factors. Internal consistency, test-retest reliability, convergent and discriminative validity of the PABQ proved adequate. In a second study, the PABQ showed to be sensitive to change due to exposure treatment outcome (N = …

Charles Darwin (1809-1882) suffered from a chronic illness that, throughout much of his adult life, impaired his functioning and severely limited his activities. The writings of this famous scientist as well as biographical materials indicate that he probably suffered from an anxiety disorder. His symptoms, when considered individually, suggest a variety of conditions, but taken together they point toward panic disorder with agoraphobia. This diagnosis brings coherence to Darwin's activities and explains his secluded lifestyle, including difficulty in speaking before groups and meeting with co…

Patients with panic disorder commonly report symptoms of dizziness and imbalance. We studied the relationship between objective measures of audiovestibular function, phenomenologic, and self-report measures of dysequilibrium and related somatic symptoms in a sample of panic disorder patients with and without agoraphobia, unselected for the complaint of dysequilibrium. Of seventeen patients evaluated by electronystagmography, 71 percent exhibited abnormal vestibular test findings. These latter patients had higher total anxiety ratings than patients without vestibular abnormalities. We conclude …

Acute Panic Inventory (API) scores were obtained from 26 normal controls and 89 patients with either panic disorder or agoraphobia with panic attacks before and during lactate infusions. Retrospective ratings of the patients' usual spontaneous attacks were much higher, by API, than ratings of moments of severe stress by the controls. Point of panic API scores, as well as increments of panic scores over prelactate scores, were higher for patients who experienced lactate panics than for both controls and patients who did not panic.

This investigation evaluated the association between physical inactivity and emotional vulnerability in panic disorder. Participants were 39 adults (69% females) with a primary diagnosis of panic disorder (with or without agoraphobia), recruited through the community. Consistent with prediction, current physical inactivity was significantly associated with greater levels of anxiety sensitivity and severity of panic disorder. Results are discussed in relation to the importance of better understanding the role of physical inactivity in panic disorder.

This article focuses on a family systems nursing approach for essential hypertension. A case example is presented that describes the approach with a hypertensive woman with agoraphobia symptoms. A clinically significant decrease in the client's blood pressure occurred following the family sessions. Clinical observations of improved family relationships and symptom reduction corroborate research findings on the variables of perceived stress, anxiety levels and family coping resources. Interventions such as split-opinions, reframing, and rituals are described.

The author deals with new findings in research and clinical application of atypical neuroleptic drugs, MAO inhibitors, in particular and second generation, and non-diazepine anxiolytics, in particular serotonergic ones. He summarizes the possibilities of psychopharmacotherapy of clinical units which will be included in the 10th revision of the International statistical classification of diseases, injuries and causes of death, i.e. panic anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, agoraphobia with panic attacks and generalized disorder of anxiety.

A woman whose condition was diagnosed as agoraphobia with panic attacks participated in an all-night polysomnographic study. During the night she experienced a panic attack that was phenomenologically similar to her daytime attacks. The attack occurred suddenly, arising from stage 3-4 (delta) sleep. There was no disruption of sleep architecture immediately before awakening. The occurrence of this panic attack during sleep is discussed in the context of other nighttime sleep disorders.

RESULTS: All networks were densely and positively inter-connected; networks of women and men were structurally similar. Our most frequent and stable solution identified four phobic clusters: (i) blood-injection, (ii) social-agoraphobia, (iii) situ …

The aim of this review was to survey the available literature on prodromal and residual symptoms of panic disorder. Both a computerized (Medline) and a manual search of the literature were performed. In a substantial proportion of patients with panic disorder with agoraphobia a prodromal phase can be identified. Most patients report residual symptoms despite successful treatment. Residual symptoms upon remission have a prognostic value. There appears to be a relationship between residual and prodromal symptomatology (the rollback phenomenon). Appraisal of subclinical symptomatology in panic di…

Sixty alcoholics (40 males) were assessed for agoraphobia and social phobia, and over half the sample were rated as having either or both these disorders when last drinking. Twenty one subjects had mild phobias and eleven had severe phobias. The more severely phobic males were also found to be the most alcohol dependent and those with no phobias were least alcohol dependent but this effect was not found among the females. All phobic alcoholics reported that alcohol had helped them to cope in feared situations, and almost all had deliberately used it for this purpose. A small sample of out-pati…
