Copper-Catalyzed Aqueous N-O Bond Cleavage of 2-Oxa-3-Azabicyclo Compounds to Cyclic cis-1,4-Amino Alcohols.

The N-O bond cleavage of 2-oxa-3-azabicyclo substrates, which are readily prepared by the hetero Diels-Alder reaction between nitroso dienophiles and cyclic 1,3-dienes, was effectively catalyzed by heterogeneous copper-on-carbon (Cu/C) under aqueous conditions to give the corresponding cyclic cis-1,4-amino alcohol derivatives. The present method was applied to the direct incorporation of the hydroxy and amino groups derived from a nitroso substrate into cyclic 1,3-dienes with cis-selectivity by the combination of the in situ formation of 2-oxa-3-azabicyclo compounds and following Cu/C-catalyze

N-Chlorosuccinimide (NCS)-N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), a reagent for the oxidation of benzylic alcohols to aldehydes and ketones.

The oxidation of benzylic alcohol to corresponding aldehyde and ketone using N-chlorosuccinimide (NCS)-N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) has been described. This method gives easy access to the corresponding carbonyl compounds under metal-free conditions, without the use of corrosive reagent at ambient temperature in good yield.

Visible-light driven oxidation of gaseous aliphatic alcohols to the corresponding carbonyls via TiO2 sensitized by a perylene derivative.

Sensitized P25 TiO2 was prepared by wet impregnation with a home-prepared perylene dye, i.e., N,N'-bis(2-(1-piperazino)ethyl)-3,4,9,10-perylene-tetracarboxylic acid diimide dichloride (PZPER). Energy levels of PZPER were found to be compatible with those of TiO2 allowing fast electron transfer. The obtained catalyst has been characterized and used in the gas-phase partial oxidation of aliphatic primary and secondary alcohols, i.e., methanol, ethanol, and 2-propanol. The reaction was carried out under cut-off (λ > 400 nm) simulated solar radiation in O2 atmosphere. The perylene derivative allow…

Kinetics of esterification of acidified oil with different alcohols by a cation ion-exchange resin/polyethersulfone hybrid catalytic membrane.

Hybrid catalytic membranes consisting of cation ion-exchange resin particles (CERP) and polyethersulfone (PES) were prepared by immersion ph … highest free fatty acids (FFAs) conversion of 95.28% since it has better miscibility than the other alcohols which strengthened mass and heat transfer. Furthermore, pseudo-homogeneous kinetic models of the esterification of acidified oil with the four alcohols were established according to the experimental data. The kinetic models can well predict the FFA …

An expeditious entry to 9-azabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane N-oxyl (ABNO): another highly active organocatalyst for oxidation of alcohols.

A practical, three-step synthetic route to 9-azabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane N-oxyl (ABNO, 3), an unhindered, stable class of nitroxyl radical, has been developed. ABNO exhibits a highly active nature compared with TEMPO in the catalytic oxidation of alcohols to their corresponding carbonyl compounds.

The influence of short-chain alcohols on interfacial tension, mechanical properties, area/molecule, and permeability of fluid lipid bilayers.

We used micropipette aspiration to directly measure the area compressibility modulus, bending modulus, lysis tension, lysis strain, and area expansion of fluid phase 1-stearoyl, 2-oleoyl phosphatidylcholine (SOPC) lipid bilayers exposed to aqueous solutions of short-chain alcohols at alcohol concentrations ranging from 0.1 to 9.8 M. The order of effectiveness in decreasing mechanical properties and increasing area per molecule was butanol>propanol>ethanol>methanol, although the lysis strain was invariant to alcohol chain-length. Quantitatively, the trend in area compressibility modulus follows…

Liquid chromatographic determination of alcohols in food and beverages with indirect polarimetric detection using a beta-cyclodextrin mobile phase.

An indirect polarimetric detection method for the determination of alcohols has been proposed in liquid chromatography (LC). Optically active mobile-phase additives, such as beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD), could be used to visualize optically inactive alcohols in reversed-phase LC. The visualization of alcohols is based on a perturbation of the partition of beta-CD caused by the alcohols. The detection limits of the present system at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3 were 0.031, 0.019, 0.018, 0.013, 0.011, 0.008 and 0.008% (v/v) for ethanol, 2-propanol, 1-propanol, 2-methyl-2-propanol, 2-butanol, 2-me…

Use of a macrocyclic antibiotic, rifamycin B, and indirect detection for the resolution of racemic amino alcohols by CE.

Ansamycins are a very specific class of macrocyclic antibiotics of which the rifamycins are among the better known members. Rifamycins bind to and inhibit DNA polymerase. Rifamycin B (the most easily obtained ansamycin) is negatively charged and is shown to associate with and enantioselectively resolve several chiral amino alcohols including terbutaline, isoproterenol, bamethan, metaproterenol, synephrine, metanephrine, salbutamol, epinephrine, norphenylephrine, ephedrine, psi-ephedrine, octopamine, norepinephrine, normetanephrine, metoprolol, alprenolol, atenolol, and oxprenolol. Biphasic effects of alcohols on the phase transition of poly(L-lysine) between alpha-helix and beta-sheet conformations.

Poly(L-lysine) exists as a random-coil at neutral pH, an alpha-helix at alkaline pH, and a beta-sheet when the alpha-helix poly(L-lysine) is heated. The present Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) study showed that short-chain alcohols (methanol, ethanol, and 2-propanol) partially transformed alpha-helix poly(L-lysine) to beta-sheet when their concentrations were low. At higher concentrations, however, these alcohols reversed the reaction, and the alcohol-induced beta-sheet was transformed back to alpha-helix structure. The reversal occurred at 1.40 M methanol, 0.96 M ethanol, and 0.55 M 2-propa…

Transport parameters in the human red cell membrane: solute-membrane interactions of hydrophilic alcohols and their effect on permeation.

A systematic study has been made of the three coefficients that describe the human red cell membrane transport of a series of short straight-chain hydrophilic alcohols: the permeability coefficient, omega i, the reflection coefficient, sigma i, and the hydraulic conductivity, Lp. Ethylene glycol transport is saturable with Km = 220 +/- 50 mM; there is a second, low-affinity, ethylene glycol site which inhibits water transport (K = 570 +/- 140 mM, max. inhib. = 90 +/- 10%). sigma eth gly = 0.71 +/- 0.04 which is significantly less than 1 (n = 6, P less than 0.001), as are sigma i for six other …

Breath-alcohol analysis as a surrogate for blood-alcohol concentration depends on assuming a constant blood/breath ratio of alcohol.

The ratio of blood-alcohol concentration (BAC) to breath-alcohol concentration (BrAC), which is commonly referred to as the blood/breath ratio (BBR), is an important concept in forensic science and legal medicine. For example, the BBR serves as the calibration factor used when a breath-alcohol test result is converted into the coexisting BAC for clinical, research, and forensic purposes. Furthermore, when legislative bodies established statutory BrAC limits for driving, they divided the statutory BAC limit by an assumed population average BBR, hence BrAC = BAC/BBR. However, jurisdictions opted

Perceived Risk of Binge Drinking among Older Alcohol Users: Associations with Alcohol Use Frequency, Binge Drinking, Alcohol Use Disorder, and Alcohol Treatment Use.

Despite the high prevalence of alcohol use and binge drinking among older adults, little research has been conducted on the association between their alcohol risk perception and alcohol use patterns. Using data on past-year alcohol users aged 50 and older (N = 6693) in the 2022 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, we examined the (1) associations between risk perception of binge alcohol use 1-2 times a week and alcohol use frequency, binge use frequency, and alcohol use disorder (AUD), and (2) the association between alcohol treatment use and risk perception. About 40% of past-year alcohol

National Task Force on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and Fetal Alcohol Effect: defining the national agenda for fetal alcohol syndrome and other prenatal alcohol-related effects.

Prenatal alcohol exposure can lead to serious birth defects and developmental disabilities. A need exists to develop effective strategies for both children with fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) or other prenatal alcohol-related effects and for women at high risk for having an alcohol-exposed pregnancy. Since the syndrome was identified approximately 30 years ago, advancements have been made in FAS diagnostics, surveillance, prevention, and intervention, but a substantial amount of work remains. Collaborations among partners in federal state, and local agencies, academia, clinical professions, scho

Chemical processes of alcohol consumption and social behavior pattern of alcoholics.

Alcohol consumption remains a major global public health and social challenge, driven by complex interactions between biochemical processes and sociocultural dynamics. This study critically examines the chemical pathways of ethanol metabolism and their relationship with the social behavior patterns observed among individuals with alcohol use disorder (AUD). Drawing on an interdisciplinary narrative review of peer-reviewed literature in biochemistry, neuroscience, psychology, sociology, and public health, the paper synthesizes evidence on how alcohol dehydrogenase, aldehyde dehydrogenase, and c

Alterations in Neurotrophins in Alcohol-Addicted Patients during Alcohol Withdrawal.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is related to mental and somatic disorders that result in alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS), with 30% of AWS cases leading to life-threatening delirium tremens (DTs). Currently, studies do not support using any one biomarker in DTs. Neurotrophins affect neuromodulation, playing a role in the pathogenesis of AUD, AWS, and DTs. METHODS: This review aims to summarize experimental and clinical data related to neurotrophins and S100B in neuroplasticity, as well as neurodegeneration in the context of AUD, AWS, and DTs. This work used publications that were sel

Acute Alcohol-Induced Pancreatitis After Transcoronary Alcohol Ablation.

Alcohol-induced pancreatitis typically presents as acute nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain, typically seen as a complication of chronic alcoholism or binge drinking alcoholic beverages. Here, we present a case of alcohol-induced pancreatitis from an unusual source: alcohol used in a catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation. This is the first case in current literature that has identified this adverse effect of alcohol catheter ablation.
