Ankle fractures requiring either manipulation under anaesthetic or open reduction and internal fixation can lead to prolonged morbidity. This prospective study investigates the possible relationship between obesity and the severity of ankle fractures following low velocity injuries. The body mass index (BMI) of patients with displaced malleolar fractures was compared with that of patients with undisplaced malleolar fractures. A BMI of 18 to 25 kg/m2 is considered to be the 'desirable' range for both men and women. Fractures considered 'severe' were those associated with disruption of the ankle

BACKGROUND: Acute ankle sprains are among the most common injuries in children and are often associated with chondral avulsion fractures and ligament injuries. However, radiography may not be sufficiently accurate for assessing cartilage and ligament injuries in children. The primary purpose of this study was to evaluate the necessity of radiography in the diagnosis of acute ankle sprains in children. The secondary purpose was to assess whether ultrasonography can effectively improve the diagnostic accuracy of acute ankle sprains in children.
METHODS: We collected medical data from 78 childre

Background and objective Ankle injuries are prevalent among elementary school students and are associated with subsequent injuries. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between a history of ankle sprain and the physical characteristics of elementary school badminton players. Methods A questionnaire-based survey was conducted among 64 fifth- and sixth-grade badminton players. Based on the presence or absence of a history of ankle sprain, the participants were categorized into the sprain and non-sprain groups. Both groups underwent assessments of dynamic balance ability, flexibility,…

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the utility and medium-term results of a new intra-operative classification system for distal tibiofibular syndesmosis injury in ankle fractures.
METHODS: Between January 2010 and January 2015, 116 patients diagnosed with displaced closed Weber B and C ankle fractures were treated in our department. The etiology of injury was 56 cases of fall-sprain, 36 of traffic injury, 14 of fall from a height, and 10 of multiple injuries. After fixation of the fibular fracture, we classify syndesmosis stability as either normal or one of three grades of instability using the fibu

PURPOSE: Acute syndesmotic ankle injuries continue to impose a diagnostic dilemma and it remains unclear whether weightbearing and/or external rotation should be added during the imaging process. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess if combined weightbearing and external rotation increases the diagnostic sensitivity of syndesmotic ankle instability using weightbearing CT (WBCT) imaging, compared to isolated weightbearing.
METHODS: In this retrospective study, patients with an acute syndesmotic ankle injury were analysed using a WBCT (N = 21; Age = 31.6 ± 14.1 years old). Inclusion c…

Although fracture type and treatment options for ankle fractures are well defined, the differences between mono- and polytrauma patients and low- and high-energy trauma have not been addressed. The aim of the present study was to compare the fracture type and trauma mechanism between mono- and polytrauma and low- and high-energy trauma patients with an ankle fracture. We performed a single-center retrospective cohort study. Fractures were classified according to the Lauge-Hansen classification and a descriptive classification. High-energy trauma (HET) was defined using triage criteria. All oth

PURPOSE: The objectives of this study were to: 1) establish a database of kinematic and EMG data during cutting movements, 2) describe normal muscle function and coordination of 12 lower extremity muscles during cutting movements susceptible to ankle sprains, and 3) identify potential muscle coordination deficiencies that may lead to ankle sprain injuries.
METHODS: Kinematic, EMG, and GRF data were collected from 10 recreationally active male subjects during both a side-shuffle and v-cut movement.
RESULTS: The data showed that muscles functioned similarly during both movements. The primary f

Acute lateral ankle sprain is a frequent musculoskeletal injury, especially in sports. Most people recover within weeks, however, some have persistent symptoms for years. The Ottawa Ankle Rules can be used for initial investigation of a fracture in the ankle. Five days after the injury, a clinical examination should be completed. Both proprioceptive exercise and mechanical support can prevent ankle injuries and are also effective treatment modalities. Only few require surgery.

Ankle sprains are one of the most common musculoskeletal injuries, being the most frequent musculoskeletal trauma among athletes. Most of these injuries are successfully treated conservatively; however, up to 70% of patients can develop long-lasting symptoms. Therefore, understanding prognostic factors for an ankle sprain could help clinicians identify patients with poor prognosis and choose the right treatment.A suggested approach will be presented in order to positively identify the factors that should warrant a more aggressive attitude in the initial conservative treatment. There are some pro

Dislocation of the major joints of the lower extremities--hip, knee, and ankle--can occur due to motor-vehicle crashes, falls, and sports injuries. Hip dislocations are the most common, and they require emergent management to prevent avascular necrosis of the femoral head. Knee dislocations are uncommon but potentially dangerous injuries that can result in amputation due to the potential for missed secondary injury, especially if they are reduced spontaneously. Isolated ankle dislocations are relatively rare, as most ankle dislocations involve an associated fracture. This review presents an al

BACKGROUND: It is necessary to have an understanding of ankle and hindfoot motion and stability to accurately diagnosis and treat ankle-hindfoot disorders.
METHODS: We devised an ankle ligament testing apparatus to more critically determine ankle stability in all planes with a constant rotational force applied (inversion, eversion, internal rotation, external rotation) throughout the range of sagittal plane motion in 13 cadaver specimens. Three-dimensional kinematics were determined with a magnetic tracking device.
RESULTS: With inversion force applied, calcaneal-tibial inversion was greates

Deltoid ligament injuries account for 5.1% to 15.8% of ankle sprains and occur with concomitant lateral ankle sprains. The anterior tibiotalar ligament (ATTL), located within the deep layer of the deltoid ligament complex, connects the talus and the tibia on the medial side of the ankle and controls ankle eversion and rotation. If conservative treatment for chronic medial ankle instability after an ankle sprain fails, ATTL repair or reconstruction might be necessary. Arthroscopic reconstruction techniques of the lateral ankle ligaments recently have been reported. Here, we describe arthroscopi

INTRODUCTION: In prolonged care scenarios, where medical evacuations are significantly delayed, the treatment and transport of casualties with extremity musculoskeletal injuries will drain combat units' human resources. Developing enhanced splinting techniques to restore casualty mobility and function can alleviate this drain. To guide this development, a panel of tactical combat and wilderness medicine experts was assembled to determine which extremity musculoskeletal injuries had the greatest impact on unit capabilities, and the materials available for splinting these injuries.

Orthotic treatment, particularly for ankle injuries, often relies on devices such as ankle-foot orthoses (AFOs) to support and stabilize the foot and ankle. Given the high prevalence of lower extremity injuries, especially in sports, and the diagnostic challenges faced by clinicians, there is a pressing need for intelligent systems that aid in accurate assessment and personalized management. Misdiagnosis and suboptimal treatment of ankle conditions, including fractures and sprains, can lead to long-term complications and hinder recovery. This study presents TeleOrtho, a knowledge-based expert …
