BACKGROUND: Acute onset of cardiovascular dysfunction may be the result of insults to the central nervous and autonomic system. Several cerebral regions (insular cortex, lateral, hypothalamus, and brain stem) have been identified as part of the "central autonomic network". The brain stem plays an integral role in controlling and mediating autonomic tone.
PATIENT AND METHODS: Case reports.
RESULTS: These two case reports demonstrate the intimate connectivity between the cardiovascular/pulmonary system and the central nervous system in a 13-year-old girl with occipital angiomatosis, but no his

Fifty patients diagnosed with dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) according to criteria of I. MacKleith et al (2000), mean age 71.1 +/- 6.1 years, have been studied. Severity of dimentia was evaluated using a battery of neuropsychological scales and tests. A state of autonomic nervous system function was determined during clinical examination, the results of which were used as a basis for the Scale of autonomic disorders severity, and by instrumental methods. Most of patients with DLB had autonomic disorders, such as orthostatic hypotension, heat intolerability, dryness of cutaneous epithelium and…

While the consequences of damage to the sensorimotor nervous system in spinal cord injury are obvious, autonomic dysreflexia often goes unrecognised. Spinal cord injury affecting the cord above the fifth thoracic segment involves interruption of the connection between brain and sympathetic nervous system and, below the level of the lesion, the sacral parasympathetic nervous system. The isolated spinal cord continues to function, except for the directly damaged segment, but there is no central control. The autonomic nervous system below the level of the lesion can trigger severe reactions from …

This paper is a brief review of some of the numerous interactions between the autonomic nervous system and the endocrine pancreas. Particular emphasis is placed on the role of recently discovered autonomic factors and newly recognized autonomic centers in the brain.

An artificial nerve, in the broad sense, may be conceptualized as a physical and logical interface system that reestablishes the information traffic between the central nervous system and peripheral organs. Studies on artificial nerves targeting the autonomic nervous system are in progress to explore new treatment strategies for several cardiovascular diseases. In this article, we will review our research targeting the autonomic nervous system to treat cardiovascular diseases. First, we identified the rule for decoding native sympathetic nerve activity into a heart rate using transfer function…

BACKGROUND: Treatment and control of hypertension are important for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases. The autonomic nervous system plays a major role in the development and progression of hypertension and has become a new research hotspot in cardiovascular disease. Exercise as a non-pharmacologic intervention has likewise received much attention in the field of cardiovascular disease.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of exercise on the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems of hypertensive patients. The effects of aerobic, resistance, and combined aerobic and resistance e…

Pure autonomic failure (PAF) is a neurodegenerative disease affecting the sympathetic component of the autonomic nervous system and presenting as orthostatic hypotension (OH). It is a rare, sporadic disease of adults. Although OH is the primary symptom, the autonomic dysfunction may be more generalised, leading to genitourinary and intestinal dysfunction and sweating disorders. Autonomic symptoms in PAF may be similar to those observed in other autonomic neuropathies that need to be ruled out. PAF belongs to the group of α synucleinopathies and is characterised by predominant peripheral deposi…

The function of the peripheral nervous system is somewhat improved by ERT with reduction in neuropathic pain and an improvement of the detection threshold for cold and warm sensation in the hand and foot. Electrocardiographic RR intervals fluctuate cyclically, modulated by ventilation, baroreflexes, and other genetic and environmental factors that are mediated through the autonomic nervous system. Short term electrocardiographic recordings (5 to 15 minutes), made under controlled conditions, e.g., lying supine or standing or tilted upright can elucidate physiologic, pharmacologic, or pathologic changes in autonomic nervous system function. Long-term, usually 24-hour recordings, can be used to assess autonomic nervous responses during normal daily activities in health, disease, and in response t…

BACKGROUND: Multiple System Atrophy (MSA) is a rare neurodegenerative disease with pronounced autonomic failure (AF). Severe cardiovascular AF is associated with poor prognosis. Since sweating dysfunction is less well known, we investigated the interest of a quick and non-invasive assessment of sweating using electrochemical skin conductance (ESC) as a marker for AF in MSA.
METHODS: 138 MSA patients of the French Reference center for MSA with an annual follow-up including the Unified MSA Rating Scale (UMSARS), COMPASS (autonomic symptoms) and measurements of foot and hand ESC (Sudoscan®) part

INTRODUCTION: Silicone breast implants (SBI) result in immune dysregulation and are associated with autoimmune diseases. Recently, we reported dysregulated levels of IgG autoantibodies directed against G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) of the autonomic nervous system which were linked to the autoimmune dysautonomia in silicone breast implant illness (SBII).
AIMS: We aimed to explore the possible association between allergy with dysregulated IgE autoantibodies directed against GPCRs of the autonomic nervous system in women with SBI.
METHODS: Circulating levels of IgE autoantibodies against …

OBJECTIVE: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) potentially harms the child before birth. We previously found GDM to be associated with developmental changes in the central nervous system. We now hypothesise that GDM may also impact on the fetal autonomic nervous system under metabolic stress like an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT).
DESIGN: We measured heart rate variability (HRV) of mothers and fetuses during a three-point OGTT using fetal magnetocardiography (fMCG).
SETTING: Measurements were performed in the fMEG Centre in Tübingen.
POPULATION: After exclusion of 23 participants, 13 pr…

A high incidence of cardiac conduction disturbances is a salient feature in familial amyloid polyneuropathy (FAP) and amyloid infiltration of the conduction system has been found. In patients with FAP autonomic nervous dysfunction involving gastrointestinal, urogenital and cardiovascular systems has been described. However, the present study is the first to evaluate the results of autonomic tests and pharmacologic intervention in the autonomic nervous regulation of the cardiac conduction system during an invasive electrophysiologic study. Seven patients with FAP and severe disturbances of the

The nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS) is the primary brain region for receiving and integrating cardiovascular afferent signals. It plays a crucial role in maintaining balance of autonomic nervous system and regulating blood pressure through cardiovascular reflexes. Neurons within the NTS form complex synaptic connections and interact reciprocally with other brain regions. The NTS regulates autonomic nervous system activity and arterial blood pressure through modulating baroreflex, sympathetic nerve activity, renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, and oxidative stress. Dysfunctions in NTS activi…
