Flying and danger, joy and fear.

U.S. Air Force fliers are all volunteers who undergo rigorous training for their profession. Their motivation may be deeprooted and emotional, or may arise from a conscious decision made in early adulthood. Some motivation is flawed and fails early. Other motivation may be eroded by a single dangerous event, by an accumulation of "close calls" (one's own or others'), or by a growing interest in nonaviation elements. Since Air Force fliers may "quit" only at some personal cost to pride or pocketbook, they may develop a fear of flying. This may be truly phobic, a situational reaction, or an awar…

Landing Technique Effects on Lower-Limb Biomechanics During Half-Squat Parachute Landing.

INTRODUCTION: During a half-squat parachute landing, foot-strike pattern influences joint kinematics and injury risk. This study compared forefoot and full-foot landing techniques to determine their effects on joint biomechanics, impact forces, and landing stability. METHODS: A total of 17 male paratroopers performed both landing conditions. Lower-limb kinematics, ground reaction forces, and surface electromyography were synchronously recorded using infrared motion capture, a force platform, and wireless electromyography. Paired-sample t-tests or Wilcoxon signed-rank tests were applied (α = 0

Cervical Fracture With Posterior Ligamentous Injury While Skydiving.

A 46-year-old male soldier reported to an emergency department with severe acute neck pain immediately following a hyperflexion injury during recreational skydiving. He was evaluated in the emergency department, including radiographs, and released with a diagnosis of "acute neck strain." After presenting with continued neck pain, he was sent for consultation with a physical therapist. The physical therapist ordered cervical spine radiographs, which revealed findings consistent with cervical fracture and ligamentous disruption. In addition, the radiologist recommended computed tomography and ma

Flight Anxiety Reported from 1986 to 2015.

BACKGROUND: Fear of flying is one of the most common phobias. It hinders people in performing their work and hampers family relations. Even though flight traffic has increased, there are new fears. Valid studies are needed to answer whether there have been changes in the prevalence of flight anxiety, are there sex differences in relation to fear of flying, use of alcohol, and tranquilizers, which situations cause the most flight anxiety, and whether the above factors have changed compared to a similar study from 1986.METHODS: A questionnaire was distributed to a representative random sample of

Skydiving and the risk of cervical disc herniation.

The skydiving/parachuting sport which has recently gained popularity is also known for its accidents and injuries. However, there are a few studies related to its occupational ergonomic risks and occupational musculoskeletal diseases. It has been reported that the sudden hyperextension of the neck during the parachute opening, so called opening shock results in neck pain. It has been found that the jumpers are subjected to an average deceleration of 3-5 times the earth's gravitational acceleration (3-5 G) during parachute opening shock. It is considered that the spinal cord is destabilized by

Investigating Cooperative Behavior in Ecological Settings: An EEG Hyperscanning Study.

The coordinated interactions between individuals are fundamental for the success of the activities in some professional categories. We reported on brain-to-brain cooperative interactions between civil pilots during a simulated flight. We demonstrated for the first time how the combination of neuroelectrical hyperscanning and intersubject connectivity could provide indicators sensitive to the humans' degree of synchronization under a highly demanding task performed in an ecological environment. Our results showed how intersubject connectivity was able to i) characterize the degree of cooperatio

The results of cosmic radiation in-flight TEPC measurements during the CAATER flight campaign and comparison with simulation.

The European-Commission-supported project DOSMAX (Dosimetry of Aircrew Exposure to Radiation During Solar Maximum) was aimed at measuring aircrew exposure to cosmic radiation on-board the aircraft during solar maximum. During a dedicated international comparison mission (Co-ordinated Access to Aircraft for Transnational Environmental Research; CAATER) different measurement techniques have been compared by six European institutes (Results of the CAATER Mission, DOSMAX Meeting, Dublin, June 2004). In this paper, we present the tissue-equivalent proportional counter (TEPC) measurements carried ou

EMS helicopter crashes: what influences fatal outcome?

STUDY OBJECTIVE: In recent years, air transport of patients has been associated with disproportionate increases in crashes and deaths. We identify factors related to fatal outcome in air medical helicopter crashes and suggest preventive measures. METHODS: This was a retrospective study using National Transportation Safety Board records for helicopter emergency medical services (EMS) crashes between January 1, 1983, and April 30, 2005. The main outcome measure was the percentage of air medical crashes resulting in 1 or more deaths. RESULTS: There were 182 helicopter EMS crashes during the 22.

Contrast sensitivity in a large adult population.

The contrast sensitivity test (using Vistech charts) was performed on a consecutive sample of 1612 eyes of 807 Republic of Singapore Air Force personnel (two diseased eyes excluded), which had no known ophthalmic disorder. This yielded a large sample norm of spatial Contrast Sensitivity Function (CSF) distribution curves, based on the local population. Although all subjects had their refractive errors fully corrected by spectacles, whenever necessary, to visual acuity of 6/6 or better, myopes had lower mean contrast sensitivity, in the higher spatial frequencies, compared to the emmetropic. An intelligent computational framework combining neural networks with complex Pythagorean fuzzy FUCA for airspace capacity evaluation and traffic forecasting.

The contemporary aviation system demands intelligent airspace capacity assessment and traffic prediction, which are essential towards maximizing operational efficiency, safety, and strategic planning. But there are few studies that combine predictive learning with complex fuzzy decision-making, and all three, which are nonlinear traffic dynamics, complex-valued expert uncertainty, and complex decision-making. To overcome uncertainty, vagueness, and complex expertise evaluations that are part of airspace management, this paper suggests a new hybrid framework that integrates both neural networks…

The Visceral Adiposity Index Is a Better Predictor of Excess Visceral Fat in Military Pilots: A Cross-sectional Observational Study.

INTRODUCTION: Visceral adipose tissue (VAT) is related to cardiometabolic risk. Estimating it using the visceral adiposity index (VAI) could identify this risk in the Brazilian Air Force (BAF) aviator population. The aim here is to verify the predictive capacity of the VAI for identifying visceral fat areas compared to traditional obesity indicators in BAF pilots. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty male BAF pilots were recruited. The study was conducted in two stages: the first applied a structured questionnaire to characterize the sample and identify sedentary behavior and the second obtained nutr

Lipid Subhyaloid Maculopathy and Exposure to High Altitude.

BACKGROUND: High altitude retinopathy (HAR) includes a number of diseases related to high altitude such as acute mountain sickness (AMS), high altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE) and high altitude cerebral edema (HACE). High altitude retinopathy is mainly characterized by retinal hemorrhages, usually sparing the macular region, a condition specifically known as high altitude retinal hemorrhages (HARH). The pathogenesis of HARH is unclear. Many studies show that lack of oxygen causes an inadequate autoregulation of retinal circulation, causing vascular incompetence. Other retinal changes described

Contact lenses and corrective flying spectacles in military aircrew--implications for flight safety.

BACKGROUND: Refractive devices used by aviators need to suit the aerospace environment or their failure can have serious implications. A relatively minor visual disability can result in loss of life and aircraft. We surveyed commonly occurring problems with the different types of refractive correction worn by Royal Air Force (RAF) aircrew over the previous 12 mo. We also asked if they had experienced any flight safety incidents (FSI) relating to their refractive correction. METHODS: A retrospective anonymous questionnaire survey was given to 700 active aircrew occupationally graded as requiri
