Electrical stimulation (ES) modulates diverse cellular processes, yet in vitro platforms often lack precision, scalability, and compatibility with 3D bioscaffolds. We present a modular bioreactor system that delivers low-voltage, bioscaffold-coupled ES via conductive graphene foam, enabling real-time waveform monitoring and live cell imaging. Components were fabricated using low-cost stereolithography with BioMed Clear resin and validated through mechanical, chemical, and cytocompatibility analyses. Printed parts exhibited high dimensional accuracy, retained mechanical integrity post-steriliza

Thermoresponsive poloxamers are commonly used in biomedical applications; however, their wider translational applicability depends on precisely controlling sol-gel transition behavior near body temperature while ensuring injectability and a favorable biocompatibility profile. In this study, blends of three clinically relevant poloxamers were evaluated to find formulations suitable for potential injectable meniscal and joint therapies. The rheological properties and temperature-dependent gelation of these formulations were characterized, followed by testing their injectability into meniscal def

This study aimed to compare the in vivo performance of small-diameter vascular prostheses (VPs) electrospun from protein-enriched aromatic (Tecothane) and aliphatic (Tecoflex) polyurethanes versus standard expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) grafts in a rat aortic model. The unsatisfying long-term patency and excessive neointimal hyperplasia of clinically used ePTFE small-diameter grafts motivate the search for alternative materials with improved biocompatibility and mechanical compliance. SDVGs were implanted into the infrarenal aorta of Wistar rats for up to 6 months. Evaluations includ

The long-term failure of implantable stents originates from static protection that cannot adapt to the temporal shift of primary risks from early-stage infection and late-stage biofilm-mineral occlusion. Inspired by the dynamic metal homeostasis of metallothioneins, we propose a β-hydroxy thioether-based ion-regulatory network that programs competing binding sites with distinct kinetic and thermodynamic preferences, thereby embedding an intrinsic functional clock into an otherwise static material. As a proof of concept, silver is employed as a representative ion to demonstrate how conventional

This study evaluates the biomechanical influence of surface texturing and hybrid coatings on stress distribution and marginal bone loss (MBL) in dental implants under varying bone loss conditions and axial loading. A parametric three-dimensional finite element model (FEM) of the human mandible was developed, consisting of cortical and cancellous bone layers. Five implant surface textures-Dome, Straight, U-Shape, X-Shape, and V-Shape-were considered, along with four hybrid coatings: hydroxyapatite (HA), HA with 3% tantalum pentoxide (HA3TO), HA with 3% strontium (HA3Sr), and HA with a combinati

BACKGROUND: Rotary nickel titanium (NiTi) files allow for faster preparation of root canals compared to hand files. Additionally, rotary NiTi files treated with silver ions are effective in eliminating pathogens and enhancing the biocompatibility of root canals. This data indicates that these materials could greatly reduce the likelihood of reinfection post-treatment, thereby improving patient outcomes.
AIM: The aim of the study was to evaluate the anti-microbial efficacy, cutting efficiency, canal shaping ability and cyclic fatigue of a nickel-titanium rotary file system coated with silver m

Pancreatic duct strictures, which can arise from trauma, inflammation, or malignancy, often result in complications such as duct obstruction, pancreatic parenchymal hypertension, and ischemia. Endoscopic stenting is an effective therapeutic approach for managing these strictures. However, traditional plastic pancreatic duct stents fail to conform to the physiological curvature of the pancreas, while metal pancreatic duct stents with flared ends reduce migration but are associated with complications such as de novo strictures. Additionally, plastic and metal pancreatic duct stents require surgi

Natural halloysite clay nanotubes with a 50 nm diameter and a 15 nm inner lumen have recently been explored for numerous medical applications. Due to the tubular morphology and biocompatibility of halloysite, this material can serve as a suitable container for drugs and proteins, allowing their controlled and sustained release over a period ranging from days to weeks. The discovery that it is possible to load a halloysite clay nanotube's inner lumen cavity with a bioactive species has prompted its consideration for pharmaceutical and cosmetic utilization. Additionally, the different chemical c

Developing durable anticoagulant coatings for cardiovascular implants remains a major research challenge. Heparin, the current gold-standard anticoagulant, faces challenges due to rapid elution from coated surfaces. This article reports a new heparin-alternative anticoagulant coating system engineered through rational design of a dual-functional chondroitin sulfate derivative (methacrylated/aldehyde-modified chondroitin sulfate, CSMAO) and sulfonated chitosan (SCS). The hierarchical architecture was constructed via sequential layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly on polydopamine (PDA)-functionalized 3

In an effort to provide a universal platform for remotely controlling the behavior of various cell lines, we present a strategy for fabricating 'smart' polymer sandwiches using a nanogel attached to temperature-responsive grafted brush coatings. These coatings can be easily modified to meet the requirements of specific cell types while preserving responsiveness. First, temperature-responsive grafted copolymer brush coatings of poly(oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate) (POEGMA) with a small amount of hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) were synthesized on glass surfaces. Subsequent mo

Biomedical hydrogels often use a photopolymerization strategy to cross-link the polymer network. There are only a few cyto-compatible photoinitiators (PIs) that are commonly used for cross-linking biomedical hydrogels, including Irgacure 2959, lithium phenyl-2,4,6-trimethylbenzoylphosphinate (LAP), and Eosin Y. Herein, we tested these PIs to optimize the cross-linking efficiency while minimizing cell death. Testing was performed on three types of hydrogels, including a synthetic material (poly(ethylene glycol)-diacrylate, PEG-DA), a semisynthetic material, PEG-fibrinogen (PF), and a modified b

Microorganisms can induce biomineralization of inorganic ions to form a lipophobic layer on the surface of cave rocks. Mimicking this, we developed and propose a protocol that produces a highly lipophobic hybrid layer of CaCO3 nanoparticles on hydrogel surfaces. This lipophobic layer endows hydrogels with an oil contact angle of 162°, causing oil droplets placed on the surface to bead up and roll off immediately. The lipophobic surface effectively resists staining from lipophilic dyes, and does not adhere to double-sided tapes. A lipophobic layer on hydrogel tubes effectively prevents the adhe

Chlorhexidine (Chx) is a commonly used antimicrobial agent in dentistry, but its effectiveness can be limited due to rapid clearance, potential cytotoxicity, and insufficient tissue penetration. Nanomaterials have been developed as carriers for Chx, can offer a solution by adapting to environmental changes during disease states and enabling targeted drug delivery. This study explores Chx-loaded nanomaterials, which show enhanced antibacterial properties, promote tissue regeneration, and facilitate drug diffusion. Results show sustained drug release profiles and significantly enhanced antimicro

Emerging research attentions are focused on the development of fluorescent biomaterials for various biomedical applications, including fluorescence-guided surgery. However, it is still challenging to prepare biomolecules-based fluorescent fibers with both satisfactory biocompatibility and optimal mechanical properties. Here, we develop a fluorescent robust biofiber through using a tetraphenylethene-containing surfactant as the contact points between polysaccharide chains of alginate. This newly developed contact points not only strengthen the cross-linking network of polysaccharide chains, but

Collagen membrane with outstanding biocompatibility exhibits immense potential in the field of corneal repair and reconstruction, but the poor mechanical properties limit its clinical application. Polycaprolactone (PCL) is a biodegradable polymer widely explored for application in corneal reconstruction due to its excellent mechanical properties, biocompatibility, easy processability, and flexibility. In this study, a PCL/collagen composite membrane with reinforced mechanical properties is developed. The membrane has a strong composite structure with collagen by utilizing a porous and hydrophi

In line with global goals to solve marine biofouling challenges, this study proposes an approach to developing a green synthesis inspired by natural resources for fouling-resistant behavior. A hybrid antifouling/foul release (HAF) coating based on poly(dimethylsiloxane) containing a green synthesized nanocomposite was developed as an environmentally friendly strategy. The nanocomposites based on graphene oxide (GO) and using marine sources, leaves, and stems of mangroves (Avicennia marina), brown algae (Polycladia myrica), and zinc oxide were compared. The effectiveness of this strategy was ch

Researchers agree that the ideal scaffold for tissue engineering should possess a 3D and highly porous structure, biocompatibility to encourage cell/tissue growth, suitable surface chemistry for cell attachment and differentiation, and mechanical properties that match those of the surrounding tissues. However, there is no consensus on the optimal pore distribution. In this study, we investigated the effect of pore distribution on corrosion resistance and performance of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSC) using titanium scaffolds fabricated by laser beam powder bed fusion (PBF-LB). We designed

Mechanical properties and integrity of biodegradable Zn alloys during degradation holds significant importance. In this study, a Zn-Mg-Mn alloy with tensile strength of 414 MPa and an elongation of 26% was developed. The strength contributions of as-extruded Zn alloy from grain boundary strengthening, precipitation strengthening, and second phase strengthening. Degradation of the Zn alloy in Hank's solution exhibited a decreasing trend with prolonged immersion, eventually stabilizing at 16 μm/year. Corrosion morphology analysis revealed that the corrosion modes transformed from pitting corrosi

PURPOSE OF STUDY: Total joint replacements (TJR) have become the cornerstone of modern orthopedic surgery. A great majority of TJR employs ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) liners. TJR manufacturers use many different types of UHMWPE, which are modified by various combinations of crosslinking, thermal treatment, sterilization and/or addition of biocompatible stabilizers. The UHMWPE modifications are expected to improve the polymer's resistance to oxidative degradation and wear (release of microparticles from the polymer surface). This manuscript provides an objective, non-commer

Porous polyetheretherketone (P-PEEK) is widely used as the material for making implant screws, and yet its mechanical properties and osseointegration for ultilization are still unsatisfied. In this work, the effects of the porosity distribution on the mechanical properties and osseointegration were investigated. Functionally graded P-PEEK (FGP-PEEK) and uniform P-PEEK (UP-PEEK) were developed by infiltration casting technology. The mechanical properties of the P-PEEK were studied by compressive and bending tests, and the osseointegration was evaluated by in vitro and rabbit femur experiments.
