Fleas are permissive and euryxenous ectoparasites capable of transmitting numerous ancient and new pathogens among warm-blooded animals, including humans. Precise identification of flea species involved in disease transmission and understanding the highly specialized morphological characteristics associated with their ectoparasitic lifestyle is essential. Likewise, identifying endosymbionts such as Wolbachia-which have long-lasting and intimate relationships with their hosts-will enhance our knowledge of the epidemiology of flea-borne diseases and their control. Flea sampling was conducted in

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is the most common cause of congenital infection, with a wide spectrum of clinical manifestations and different grade of severity. We report the case of a male baby born at term with an early prenatal diagnosis of severe intracranial hemorrhage (ICH), with no other evident risk factors. Urine and blood sample were tested for CMV-DNA, and diagnosis of congenital CMV infection was established. This case describes intracranial hemorrhage as uncommon although possible sign of early fetal CMV infection. Considering that pathogenic factors cannot be defined in 25 % of term neon

BACKGROUND: Human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) is a fatal vector-borne disease caused by Trypanosoma brucei. Although HAT incidence has declined, meeting WHO's elimination targets remain difficult, particularly due to limited diagnostic sensitivity for low-parasite load-infections. Arboviruses such as dengue (DENV 1-4), chikungunya (CHIKV), and yellow fever (YFV) virus, present with nonspecific febrile symptoms similar to HAT and are underdiagnosed in Sub-Saharan Africa. Due to this overlap in symptoms and a suspected geographical overlap of vectors and pathogens in the Democratic Republic of

Bed bugs, common blood-feeding pests, have received limited attention regarding their potential involvement in emerging pathogen transmission. This study aimed to investigate the main vector-borne bacteria within bed bugs collected from Tunisian governorates and to genetically characterize the identified species. Molecular screening was conducted on field-collected bed bug samples, targeting zoonotic vector-borne bacteria from the Anaplasmataceae family, as well as the genera Rickettsia, Ehrlichia, Bartonella, and Borrelia. A total of 119 Cimex lectularius specimens were collected and grouped

BACKGROUND: The global emergence of West Nile virus (WNV) has highlighted the importance of mosquito-borne viruses. These are inoculated in vector saliva into the vertebrate skin and circulatory system. Arthropod-borne (arbo)viruses such as WNV are transmitted to vertebrates as an infectious mosquito probes the skin for blood, depositing the virus and saliva into the skin and circulation. Growing evidence has demonstrated that arthropod, and recently mosquito, saliva can have a profound effect on pathogen transmission efficiency, pathogenesis, and disease course. A potentially important aspect

PATHOGENIC ROLE: The human T-lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I), the first human retrovirus discovered, is the etiologic agent of adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL) and of HTLV-I associated myelopathy or tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP) and has a widespread but uneven worldwide distribution. HTLV-I has a high seroprevalence in Southern Japan, the Caribbean basin and Sub-Sahara Africa. Blood transfusion, intravenous drug use, breast feeding and sexual contacts are major routes of contamination. IMPLICATIONS FOR BLOOD TRANSFUSION: The screening of blood donors for antibody to HTLV-I beca

Tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) invades the central nervous system (CNS) through strain-specific mechanisms that remain poorly understood. For mosquito-borne orthoflaviviruses such as dengue and yellow fever viruses, the nonstructural protein 1 (NS1) has been shown to disrupt endothelial barrier integrity by targeting tight junction proteins (TJPs), facilitating viral neuroinvasion. However, comparable mechanisms in TBEVs remain largely unexplored. Here, we investigated the potential interaction of NS1 from high (Hypr)- and low (Vs)-pathogenic TBEV strains with different blood-brain barri

West Nile virus (WNV) is a vector-borne zoonotic pathogen maintained in a bird-mosquito cycle, occasionally infecting humans and horses. It is considered a re-emerging pathogen in Europe, with recurrent outbreaks recently reported in Spain. However, the ecological and evolutionary factors driving spatio-temporal variation in WNV incidence remain unclear. To address this, we analysed a long-term dataset of the presence of WNV neutralizing antibodies in 19,105 serum samples from 48 avian species. Blood samples were collected from birds in southern Spain over two decades, between 2003 and 2024, e

BACKGROUND: Aedes albopictus is an invasive species which continues expanding its geographic range and involvement in mosquito-borne diseases such as chikungunya and dengue. Host selection patterns by invasive mosquitoes are critically important because they increase endemic disease transmission and drive outbreaks of exotic pathogens. Traditionally, Ae. albopictus has been characterized as an opportunistic feeder, primarily feeding on mammalian hosts but occasionally acquiring blood from avian sources as well. However, limited information is available on their feeding patterns in temperate re

Despite Pakistan's rich reptilian diversity, wild lizards have largely been unexplored for vector-borne parasites. This study reports the prevalence and phylogenetic assessment of Hepatozoon ophisauri and Toxoplasma gondii DNA in the blood samples of 101 wild lizards from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, captured at altitudes of 1200 to 2250 m above sea level between March 2022 and June 2023. PCR-based molecular analysis identified H. ophisauri DNA in three (3%) lizards of all Laudakia tuberculata. Additionally, 45 (44.5%) lizards tested positive for T. gondii DNA, including L. agrorensis, L. pak

Wild boars inhabit fields, hills, and farms across Japan, where they are fed on by numerous arthropods, including mosquitoes and ticks. Consequently, they are frequently exposed to arthropod-borne pathogens. In Toyama Prefecture, blood samples from captured wild boars have long been collected for classical swine fever virus antibody testing, with detailed records kept on the capture locations. In this study, we investigated the prevalence of antibodies against Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) and severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus (SFTSV) using 3059 serum samples collected from

Colistin (COL) is a cationic cyclic peptide that disrupts the membranes of Gram-negative bacteria and is often used as a last resort antibiotic against multidrug-resistant strains. The emergence of plasmid-borne mcr genes, which confer transferable COL resistance, has raised serious concerns, particularly in strains also carrying extended-spectrum β-lactamase and carbapenemase genes. Standard antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST), performed in enriched bacteriological media, indicates no activity of COL against mcr+ strains, leading to its exclusion from treatment regimens. However, these

OBJECTIVES: In this study, we investigated the causes of measles-like illnesses (MLI) in the Uganda national surveillance program in order to inform diagnostic assay selection and vaccination strategies.
METHODS: We used metagenomic next-generation sequencing (M-NGS) on the Illumina platform to identify viruses associated with MLI (defined as fever and rash in the presence of either cough, coryza or conjunctivitis) in patient samples that had tested IgM negative for measles between 2010 and 2019.
RESULTS: Viral genomes were identified in 87/271 (32%) of samples, of which 44/271 (16%) contain

Babesiosis is an emerging tick-borne disease caused by intraerythrocytic protozoa that are primarily transmitted by hard-bodied (ixodid) ticks and rarely through blood transfusion, perinatally, and organ transplantation. More than 100 Babesia species infect a wide spectrum of wild and domestic animals worldwide and six have been identified as human pathogens. Babesia microti is the predominant species that infects humans, is found throughout the world, and causes endemic disease in the United States and China. Babesia venatorum and Babesia crassa-like agent also cause endemic disease in China.

Bartonella spp. are emerging vector-borne pathogens distributed worldwide that can infect humans and a wide range of mammals including small companion animals (cats and dogs). An increasing number of studies from the worldwide have reported cat and dog Bartonella infections in recently years. Cats and dogs are the primary reservoir or accidental hosts for Bartonella henselae, the main causal agent of human cat scratch disease. Since pet cat and dog sharing human living environment and have the direct and intimate contact with humans, pet cats and dogs may represent excellent epidemiological se

The hepatitis E virus (HEV) is a major cause of acute hepatitis globally. Genotypes 1 and 2 (G1 and G2) are obligate human pathogens transmitted faeco-orally, leading to epidemics in developing countries. In contrast, genotypes 3 and 4 (G3 and G4) have a wider host range, including humans, but are primarily porcine viruses and are transmitted from animals to humans as a food-borne zoonosis when meat from an infected animal is consumed. HEV is increasingly recognised as a problem in developed countries, including countries in Europe. G3 HEV is now the most common cause of acute viral hepatitis

The history behind the production of clotting factor concentrates produced differences in the prevalence of Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) and other blood-borne infections in haemophilic patients. Prevalence rates of HCV infection up to 100% were reported in patients treated with concentrates before 1985. Conversely, nowadays, viral inactivation and recombinant technologies have effectively prevented transfusion-transmitted viral pathogens. Recently, new HCV infections in three young brothers were observed. In the absence of any other risk of transmission, their HIV/HCV coinfected uncle, who was livi

Marginal zone macrophages in the murine spleen play an important role in the capture of blood-borne pathogens and are viewed as an essential component of host defense against the development of pneumococcal sepsis. However, we and others have previously described the loss of marginal zone macrophages associated with the splenomegaly that follows a variety of viral and protozoal infections; this finding raises the question of whether these infected mice would become more susceptible to secondary pneumococcal infection. Contrary to expectations, we found that mice lacking marginal zone macrophag…
