PURPOSE: To explore the factors influencing decision-making and the rehabilitation experiences of older women who underwent total knee replacement (TKR). METHODS: A qualitative descriptive design with purposive sampling was employed. Women aged over 60 who had undergone TKR at a medical center in northern Taiwan were recruited during COVID-19 pandemic. Data were collected through two rounds of face-to-face interviews (3-5 days and 6-8 weeks post-surgery) and a follow-up telephone interview conducted 6 months after surgery. Postoperative ileus and associated factors in patients following major abdominal surgery in Ethiopia: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative ileus is a complication of abdominal surgery, resulting in significant morbidity and patient discomfort, dissatisfaction, and great economic burden. However, clinical studies regarding POI are very limited in Ethiopia and other Sub-Saharan countries. The main objective of this study is to assess the incidence and associated factors of postoperative ileus among adult patients who underwent abdominal surgery at hospitals in Northwest Ethiopia. METHODS AND MATERIALS: A multicenter hospital-based prospective cohort study was conducted on patients who underwent major abdo

Expanding the Scope of Open Weighing to Target Anxiety About the Consequences of Weight Gain in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Eating Disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Anxiety about weight gain is a central feature of eating disorders (EDs) and plays a key role in maintaining ED symptomatology. C … eport anxiety about the consequences of weight gain (e.g., social rejection, self-hatred, permanent body dissatisfaction). While various CBT interventions address concerns about the consequences of weight gain, we propose that open weighing sessions-when patients confront weight increases and process accompanying emotional responses-provide underutilized therapeutic o …

Prevalence and Associated Factors of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease After Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy.

Objectives To determine the prevalence of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) and associated factors. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted in different regions around the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia between 2022 and 2023. The questionnaire was distributed among patients who underwent LSG at different periods, ranging from six months to more than two years. The questionnaire comprised a risk factor assessment and the GERD-Health-Related Quality of Life (GERD-HRQL) questionnaire. Results A total of 387 participants with a mean age of 35.7±10.95

Shared genetic influences between eating disorders and gastrointestinal disease in a large, population-based sample of adult women and men.

BACKGROUND: Some preliminary research suggests higher rates of gastrointestinal disease in individuals with eating disorders (EDs). However, research is limited, and it remains unknown what etiologic factors account for observed associations. This was the first study to examine how EDs and dimensional ED symptoms (e.g. body dissatisfaction, binge eating) are phenotypically and etiologically associated with gastrointestinal disease in a large, population-based twin sample. METHODS: Adult female (N = 2980) and male (N = 2903) twins from the Michigan State University Twin Registry reported wheth…

A biopsychosocial-cultural model for understanding oral-health-related quality of life among adolescent orthodontic patients.

BACKGROUND: Based on previous theoretical oral-health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) models and most recently framework, as well as sociocultural model of body image dissatisfaction, the current study aimed to investigate the effect of individual (dental aesthetics and dental appearance social comparison) and sociocultural factors (social reinforcement from parents, peers and mass media on dental aesthetics) as well as their interaction on psychosocial dimension of OHRQoL among adolescent orthodontic patients. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study comprising 427 adolescent orthodontic pati

Functional connectivity underlying hedonic response to food in female adolescents with atypical AN: the role of somatosensory and salience networks.

Atypical anorexia nervosa (AN) usually occurs during adolescence. Patients are often in the normal-weight range at diagnosis; however, they often present with signs of medical complications and severe restraint over eating, body dissatisfaction, and low self-esteem. We investigated functional circuitry underlying the hedonic response in 28 female adolescent patients diagnosed with atypical AN and 33 healthy controls. Participants were shown images of food with high (HC) or low (LC) caloric content in alternating blocks during functional MRI. The HC > LC contrast was calculated. Based on the pr…

Modification of the medical exclusion criterion in DSM-5 social anxiety disorder: Comorbid obesity as an example.

BACKGROUND: The DSM 5 modified the medical exclusion criterion from DSM-IV, which now allows for a diagnosis of social anxiety disorder (SAD) to be given if the fears are related only to the medical condition (e.g., obesity) yet cause significant impairment or distress. METHODS: To examine this modification, the current study compared bariatric surgery candidates with DSM-IV SAD (n=135), modified SAD (clinically significant social fears related to obesity only; n=40), and no history of Axis I disorders (n=616) on variables related to pre-surgical problematic eating behaviors, body image dissa

Loss of control is central to psychological disturbance associated with binge eating disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Binge eating disorder (BED) is positively associated with obesity and psychological distress, yet the behavioral features of BED that drive these associations are largely unexplored. The primary aim of this study was to investigate which core behavioral features of binge eating are most strongly related to psychological disturbance. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: A cross-sectional study involved 180 bariatric surgery candidates, 93 members of a non-surgical weight loss support group, and 158 general community respondents (81 men/350 women, mean age 45.8 +/- 13.3, mean BMI 34.8 +/- 10.8, B

Effects of skin care and makeup under instructions from dermatologists on the quality of life of female patients with acne vulgaris.

Acne vulgaris significantly affects patients' quality of life (QOL) and their lives in various ways, including social behavior and body dissatisfaction. This may be heightened by acne's typical involvement of the face. We investigated whether the use of skin care and makeup could influence the QOL of affected patients without deteriorating conventional acne treatments. Fifty female patients with acne were recruited for our study. Twenty-five patients were instructed how to use skin care and cosmetics, while 25 patients received no specific instructions from dermatologists. Both groups received…

Contentment with quality of life among breast cancer survivors with and without contralateral prophylactic mastectomy.

PURPOSE: To understand psychosocial outcomes after prophylactic removal of the contralateral breast in women with unilateral breast cancer. METHODS: We mailed surveys to women with contralateral prophylactic mastectomy after breast cancer diagnosis between 1979 and 1999 at six health care delivery systems, and to a smaller random sample of women with breast cancer without the procedure. Measures were modeled on instruments developed to assess contentment with quality of life, body image, sexual satisfaction, breast cancer concern, depression, and health perception. Penile reconstruction after complete bladder exstrophy repair.

INTRODUCTION: The decreased penile length in patients born with bladder exstrophy (BE) results partly from pubic symphysis diastasis and the separation of the corporal bodies. Also, intrinsic shortening of anterior corporal compartment, residual penile dorsal curvature, and postsurgical scarred skin share in creation of short penile length. OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to look at whether adult men who had bladder exstrophy (BE) surgery as babies needed and benefited from penile reconstruction, which included penile lengthening and repair of any redo penile pathology that was present
