A vitamin D deficient diet increases weight gain and compromises bone biomechanical properties without a reduction in BMD in adult female mice.

Vitamin D contributes to the development and maintenance of bone. Evidence suggests vitamin D status can also alter energy balance and gut health. In young animals, vitamin D deficiency (VDD) negatively affects bone mineral density (BMD) and bone microarchitecture, and these effects may also occur due to chronic ethanol intake. However, evidence is limited in mature models, and addressing this was a goal of the current study. Seven-month-old female C57BL/6 mice (n = 40) were weight-matched and randomized to one of four ad libitum diets: control, alcohol (Alc), vitamin D deficient (0 IU/d), or

The effect on health of alternate day calorie restriction: eating less and more than needed on alternate days prolongs life.

Restricting caloric intake to 60-70% of normal adult weight maintenance requirement prolongs lifespan 30-50% and confers near perfect health across a broad range of species. Every other day feeding produces similar effects in rodents, and profound beneficial physiologic changes have been demonstrated in the absence of weight loss in ob/ob mice. Since May 2003 we have experimented with alternate day calorie restriction, one day consuming 20-50% of estimated daily caloric requirement and the next day ad lib eating, and have observed health benefits starting in as little as two weeks, in insulin

The effect of caloric restriction interventions on growth hormone secretion in nonobese men and women.

Lifespan in rodents is prolonged by caloric restriction (CR) and by mutations affecting the somatotropic axis. It is not known if CR can alter the age-associated decline in growth hormone (GH), insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-1 and GH secretion. To evaluate the effect of CR on GH secretory dynamics; forty-three young (36.8 +/- 1.0 years), overweight (BMI 27.8 +/- 0.7) men (n = 20) and women (n = 23) were randomized into four groups; control = 100% of energy requirements; CR = 25% caloric restriction; CR + EX = 12.5% CR + 12.5% increase in energy expenditure by structured exercise; LCD = low c

[Risk factors for the development of different variants of primary arteriovenous fistula dysfunction in patients on maintenance hemodialysis].

BACKGROUND: The incidence of primary dysfunction of arteriovenous fistulas (AVF) created as a permanent vascular access (PVA) for maintenance hemodialysis (HD) remains high, reaching 20-30%. Various risk factors lead to AVF delayed maturation and thrombosis. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to identify risk factors for the development of such variants of primary AVF failure as delayed maturation and thrombosis. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Our retrospective cohort study included a total of 1595 adult patients first starting maintenance HD treatment. Primary AVF dysfunction was defined as failure of successful d

Improvement of nutritional status after parathyroidectomy in patients receiving maintenance hemodialysis.

AIMS/INTRODUCTION: Parathyroidectomy is associated with improved survival in patients with end-stage kidney disease. Protein-energy wasting (PEW) is common in patients with kidney failure and predicts poor outcomes. Recent clinical trials have linked hyperparathyroidism to PEW. The present retrospective cohort study examined whether parathyroidectomy was associated with improvement in nutritional status in maintenance hemodialysis patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred twenty-nine maintenance hemodialysis patients who had successful parathyroidectomy during 2012-2018 were identified (PT

Abnormal Cardiovascular Functional Responses after the Long Interdialytic Interval: A Quasiexperimental Crossover Study.

KEY POINTS: Body fluid volumes are significantly higher at the end of the 3-day interdialytic interval compared with the 2-day interdialytic interval. VE/VCO2 slope, a noninvasive index of exercise pulmonary vascular resistance, is elevated after the 3-day interdialytic interval. VO2Peak is similar across interdialytic intervals but was limited following dialysis by postdialysis fatigue. BACKGROUND: The long interdialytic interval in thrice-weekly hemodialysis is associated with volume accumulation and excess cardiovascular risk. Few studies have evaluated cardiovascular functional changes af

Accelerometer-based prediction of ground reaction force in head-out water exercise with different exercise intensity countermovement jump.

BACKGROUND: Water jumping exercise is an alternative method to achieve maintenance of bone health and reduce exercise injuries. Clarifying the ground reaction force (GRF) of moderate and high cardiopulmonary exercise intensities for jumping movements can help quantify the impact force during different exercise intensities. Accelerometers have been explored for measuring skeletal mechanical loading by estimating the GRFs. Predictive regression equations for GRF using ACC on land have already been developed and performed outside laboratory settings, whereas a predictive regression equation for G

Low Maternal Capital Predicts Life History Trade-Offs in Daughters: Why Adverse Outcomes Cluster in Individuals.

Background: Some individuals appear prone to multiple adverse outcomes, including poor health, school dropout, risky behavior and early reproduction. This clustering remains poorly understood. Drawing on evolutionary life history theory, we hypothesized that maternal investment in early life would predict the developmental trajectory and adult phenotype of female offspring. Specifically, we predicted that daughters receiving low investment would prioritize the life history functions of "reproduction" and "defense" over "growth" and "maintenance," increasing the risk of several adverse outcomes

Mild hyperhomocysteinemia reduces the activity and immunocontent, but does not alter the gene expression, of catalytic α subunits of cerebral Na+,K+-ATPase.

Na(+),K(+)-ATPase is a membrane protein which plays a key role in the maintenance of ion homeostasis that is necessary to neuronal excitability, secondary transport and neurotransmitter uptake. Mild hyperhomocysteinemia leads to several clinical manifestations and particularly cerebral diseases; however, little is known about the mechanisms of homocysteine on cerebral Na(+),K(+)-ATPase. In the present study, we investigated the effect of mild hyperhomocysteinemia on the activity, the immunocontent of catalytic subunits (α1, α2, and α3) and the gene expression of this enzyme. We used the experi

Evenly Distributing Daily Dietary Protein Across Three Meals Reduces Women's Snack Food Reinforcement and Intake of Energy-Dense Snack Foods During Weight Loss: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: High-protein, energy-restricted diets support weight loss and maintenance; however, whether consuming a moderate amount of protein in a balanced distribution throughout the day reduces the reinforcing value (RV) and energy intake of energy-dense snack foods is not known. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the effect of 2 patterns of protein distribution during weight loss on (1) the relative reinforcing value (RRV) of energy-dense snack foods compared with the RV of a nonfood alternative; (2) energy intake when presented with snack foods; and (3) potential moderators of adheren

Life-course BMI trajectories and long-term weight gain in relation to hepatic steatosis in a rural community-based cohort in Southwest China.

BACKGROUND: Rural communities in Southwest China are undergoing rapid nutrition and lifestyle transitions, with sustained positive energy balance and long-term weight gain. These settings are often ethnic minority-dominant and characterized by higher habitual alcohol consumption than most other Chinese populations. Evidence on how life-course adiposity relates to metabolic liver fat burden in such a rural community with varying alcohol drinking frequency remains limited. We examined associations of current BMI, life-course BMI trajectories, and long-term BMI change with controlled attenuation

Which is the best phenotypic trait for use in a targeted selective treatment strategy for growing lambs in temperate climates?

Targeted selective treatment (TST) requires the ability to identify the animals for which anthelmintic treatment will result in the greatest benefit to the entire flock. Various phenotypic traits have previously been suggested as determinant criteria for TST; however, the weight gain benefit and impact on anthelmintic efficacy for each determinant criterion is expected to be dependent upon the level of nematode challenge and the timing of anthelmintic treatment. A mathematical model was used to simulate a population of 10,000 parasitologically naïve Scottish Blackface lambs (with heritable var

Frontal brain activation changes due to dual-tasking under partial body weight support conditions in older adults with multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Gait impairments present while dual-tasking in older adults with multiple sclerosis (MS) have been associated with an increased risk of falls. Prior studies have examined prefrontal cortex (PFC) activity using functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) while dual-tasking in older adults with and without cognitive impairment. While the benefits of partial body weight support (PBWS) on gait have been clearly outlined in the literature, the potential use of PBWS to improve the ability to dual task in older adults with and without MS has not been examined. The aim of this study was

Nutrition in pregnancy and lactation.

Nutrition at optimal levels is fundamental in the maintenance of positive health. Matemal nutrition is very important for the course and outcome of pregnancy. Lactation represents a stage wherein health and nutritional status of the infant are dependent on the mother. Successful pregnancy and lactation require adjustments in maternal body composition, metabolism and function of various physioogical systems. A diet that meets matemal nutritional needs is required for these adjustments, so that maternal well-being is safeguarded with birth of an healthy infant. Adequate nutrition supports the gr
